    As with businesses, where court's have held the business responsible for aLL email ever in the system (and punished where email was deleted!), it is not unlikely that the same standard will be applied to citizens. Deleting email can and will be likened, by prosecutors, to 'destruction of evidence' .. and at the least, any defense of same is an expensive adventure!

    Here's why it will never happen that the U.S. allows the source to be released: it would become clear that within the code is proof that we indeed do have the capability to manipulate the functionality of military hardware that we sell to others. Should proof of that fact be revealed, it would have serious consequences for our foreign policies, at the least! The value of the code to the U.S. is far, far more than $12 Bn.

    as an inventor, i let me state it simply: PATENTS PROTECT NOTHING!
    Get it? Absorb that fact! What patents do is merely one simple thing: they give the claimant a right to sue in court .. ie, they give him/her the opportunity to spend untold sums in legal struggles.

    period.

    And for that 'benefit' , they require you to fully divulge each significant element of the invention .. elements that, once published, are certain to contribute to the disadvantage of the inventor.

    yes .. the "dont do things that might decrease google's profits" law .. Were this action by google untainted by 'self-interest' , then maybe it has a point .. And while they're about it, why NOT punish the 2billion of us who might have need to have BMW come up fast? I mean, we're only peons in google's game of world domination! Did anyone see any ref ANYWHERE to any requirement that any site not use any materials at hand to 'up' their search standing?? ive never seen such a thing! and who would MAKE such a rule? Google 's job is to search and report what it finds, not to act as the earth's police! Ive communicated with google on other matters, to find it totally disregarding legitimate user-privacy concerns. So who polices google itself?? Time to trim this monster before its out of control ..or is it already?

    Transferring the cost of operating traffic lights from the general public to become the burden of the relatively few who drive is an issue of taxation and consequently worthy of political debate. Who has decided to change existing tax structure in this manner? Was it some 'Department of Transportation'? Does such an organization therefore have the right to generate increasinglly more revenue, sapping the assets of an unknowing few "for the general good"? Why could they then not put such devices on every road, powering the state by taking the energy owned by vehicle owners? Yes, such questions need to be addressed!

    exactly. and the article completely fails to recognize that 'under sink' tankless heaters ("instant hot water"_ have been around for decades! On the plus side, which you neglected to include in your analysis, is that tank-type heaters,in use, tend to heat up far more water than is needed.. one must 'run the tap' to get to the hot stuff, which loads the tank with unnecessary qty's of new cold water. This item could represent a huge proportion of water heating costs for many, for how often is hot water drawn from the tap in any kitchen? .. it could be that 50% of the heating is completely wasted in this way. thanks for your input. jon

    We must take great excption! Your words merely imply that you will "notify" us , not that you will allow any 'opt-out' . You seem to have further enshrined what is a massive threat to the privacy of all citizens.

    Please observe that our data is daily being added as a 'marketable asset' of google, vastly increasing its value in any future acquisition/merger/sale of the company!. Nowhere in the Privacy Policy does it say that we can opt-out of having our info given to any new owner! yes , we'd be 'informed' ... after our heads are chopped!

    I find this totally intolerable.

    Obviously the deficient 'safety culture' at NASA still exists .. Here's what the NY Times of today 7/28/05 has to say, quoting a NASA official (but note that the last part of the quote is NOT in the NASA interview but seems to be a NYTimes comment, though its hard to imagine how it might not represent the agency's view ..they did , after all, OK the launch! : ' "We had enough data that showed we had had very few problems with the PAL ramp." The ramp, they found, performed a valuable protective function, he said; with no other obvious options, they decided the shuttle was safe to fly.'     this site http://www.goodbyelongdistance.com/specs.html shows the specs, and includes two instances where the 'range of the maximum range' is 36-NINETYsix miles. Does one need a 12 cyl diesel generator on one's back to power such a device?? ;) current output seems to be 1500 ma , if i read it correctly.

    thanks ..perhaps we're getting there .. perhaps not! The planet, in your example, has also gained energy from the spacecraft, as the craft approaches it! Gravity between craft and planet is a two-way street, no?

Why not try to emulate methods of logical and fair discourse, even though it might be a great struggle for you to accomplish it?

    i've never really understood the 'slingshot' process where a satellite is whipped around a planet to gain energy/velocity .. As i see it, the sat will accellerate as it approaches the 'slingshot planet' but then as it exits the planet's gravity field it will slow down again .. so , where is the gain? ..Or rather is it really just a trick to change the direction of the sat's travel, without energy expenditure?? Can any rocketscientist out there explain this to me? tkjtkj@charter.net
