Agreed. On top of the comments you made, paying him that amount means he will have to attract nearly 10 million customers who would not have joined Sirius without him. Stern may be a popular free option for the average Joe's commute to work, but is that same person going to pay $100 ($200?) for a radio and $12.99/month for life just to listen to him?
"While NASA hasn't launched an ion-drive mission they most certainly *have* tested such engines"
You wouldn't call Deep Space 1 a mission? That is pretty harsh. I don't know if you are playing semantics and call that a test, but I consider it a mission even if it have experimental technologies on board.
Sounds like the the title should be

"I dont like these kind of people" "one of these people" "This is how these people are"
If the above comments/stereotypes were made against any group other than Christians this would have been -1 Flaimbait, instead it is currently +5 insightful.
People are constantly reminded on slashdot to keep an open mind and at the slightest bit of US centrism people are immediately flogged for not considering the other point of view. Most comments with obvious prejudice are quickly modded down. However when it comes to religion already there have been posts that get modded insightful for comparing it to mental illness, dictators who killed thousands of people, etc.
In this "enlightened" state where everything is relative and we are to respect every viewpoint the last minority it is ok to hate is the Christian minority.
Not every Christian has the same viewpoint or takes the same action on every social issue. The blatant and glib stereotyping that is being modded up here is sickening.
"Except, as far as I understand it, you can use GPL software anyway you want, without having to worry about the licence. As long as you don't distribute it, that is."
Please show me one person that has EVER been sued for using their music the way the want, as long as they don't distribute it, that is.
Does anyone know of a nice computational/science benchmark that runs on Linux/Windows/BSD and is free?
Something along the lines of Linpack would be neat. Yes, I know hpl exist but there it isn't in the yum package list for Fedora Core 3 and I couldn't get all the dependcies worked out doing it separately (being a dumb engineer not a CS guru).
"Microsoft's profit is currently focussed on two major products - MS Windows and MS Office. Both of these are in decline."
Only on/. can one of the most profitable companies in the world with record profit and revenue for this past quarter be considered in decline. I'm not saying I approve of how they do it, but it is funny how FUD can go both ways.
I agree completely. I had absolutely no interest in Apple pre OS X. If I remember correctly it was a considerable amount of time after OS X was released that Matlab was available. It wasn't until then that I considered OS X worth getting a second look. People may think I'm a Mac zealot but I guess more accuraltely I'm an OS X fan.
To be fair I think the Mathworks have done an excellent job supporting Linux, including the very affordable educational version ($100).
I'm waiting to see how much work it can actually do before making a judgement.
At the least it always exciting to have another option. I wonder how difficult it will be to take advantage of the new architecture.
I believe that civil litigation is not bound by criminal prosecution. Sure all the evidence that would have come out at the criminal trial would have done a lot of the work for the civil litigants, but it is not necessary.
Famous example: OJ Simpson was acquitted of criminal charges but was convicted of civil charges. Clearly a conviction is not required. I don't see why a plea agreement would be any different.
I don't want to get in a flame war with you, but by support I meant those who are not captain of the team, are not leadings its direction, and did not think of the idea. The world I come from is R&D where even in a development team of all PhD people there will be those that skate along doing little or the obligatory work that was not unique to why this project succeded.
" I love this in America... whatever you do don't reward the Great Performers, that's unfair because it makes me feel bad."
I agree with you that I'm sick of participation trophies and making everyone feel good about themselves, However, I think the original post had a point. They are giving awards out to teams. So say your job is to do some kind of support for one project and the guy next to you does the exact same job for some other project. His team has a genius on it and his idea becomes a major part of the company. Your team has some poor workers and through no fault of your own your project does not do well.
You don't think there will be blood wars on who gets on the projects most likely to bring in the big bucks?
Are you serious, the POWER4 and POWER5 IBM workstation/server chips have been out for years. If you want a consumer friendly version, try the 64 bit dual G5's from Apple. The G5's are not available dual core yet, but the IBM ones have been for quite some time already.
"Wind turbines are quieter and more beautiful than a coal fired power plant, and less expensive than nuclear."
I'm not going to say you can't find some report some where that in a particular case wind power could be cheaper than nuclear. But in the many reports I have read nuclear has always been cheaper than wind power. Also wind power is not viable in all areas and is not constant. There are significant losses if you have to store a large amount of energy for times when the wind does not blow.

How many times will people have to post the FAQ before people stop asking that question?
FTC: bad
:)
Spyware: bad
FTC's action to shut down spyware: ????
I can't wait to hear the conspiracies on this one.
Is now the time to test the legality of the GPL?
It seems like this might be a good case if the evidence is really so strong.
You knew someone was going to ask it...
mandatory response: it isn't that simple, they cross licensed other comapnies IP, blah, blah
there, now we don't have to go through that thread again
What I like about Linux is never having to reboot except when it is time for a kernal upgrade. :)

IBM evil (again) and no Linux? I think you're going to blow a lot of /.'s minds.

unfortunately step 2. is often fraud

Does it run Linux?
:)
This time it is actually appropriate.
