You beat me to it, I've got a number just like most people in developed countries.
I think all in all the government probably have much more information available than what the japan scheme has, the ID card and numbers are just a way of consolidating them into one access point. To me as a programmer, it sounds quite neat.
I was recently disconnected

Disconnecting

...from my isp broadband provider, they sent me a warning email at 8.30am to an account that I could only access over their service and at 10am they had disconnected me, at 11am I tried to dial in.
45 minutes of listening to the same crapy music over and over and I finally got through to find out the card I was paying with was one that had recently been canceled.
Im currently in a similar situation, I havent signed any contract with the person but it is an informal agreement that I will work for him developing the engineering application he requires.
The trouble for me is that allot of the stuff I am intergrating with is code that could potentially benefit competitors. Appart from that the front end for the code, which i am primarily employed to write is in vb and as vb goes it is getting pretty hectic.
I think open sourcing the front end would be pointless as the application is obscure in the needs it requires. But other than that, I open source in my head, programming is always a learning activity and if I learn how to do a neat trick or two it will probably be used in a differant form in the code I write for myself which is usually released completelty open.
Most business that contract, without being explained what open source is and having the benfits of os licensing explained to them would just see it as a free way for others to get hold of the code they have paid for.
And the person who is buying the binaries from them would probably not bother and just compile the source that has been released, hire someone like me to give support when they run into trouble and save them self a whole lot of money
Maybe this is one place where open source can not be used? After all, it is a business/money making environment...
(yeh yeh, I know about the arguments towards the fact that you can make money from os, not on a short basis I beleive though)
They said a lot about understanding the hardships schools face and how we were hurting for funding.
Microsoft will say anything to anyone to get them to buy their products. There will probably be contract agreements where it will be a win win situation for M$, as usual.
I dont get it,/. moderates me to a 2 - funny, then im given a 1 - troll, wtf was trolly about the comment I made?! I guess I offended a real Lucas lover:|
Inform the head that illegal activies could take place using such software, virus' may require extra budget to clean up and bandwidth doesnt go to proper educational use. he or she will probably ask you to implement any measures you deam fit to block the software and also let the users of the network know that what there doing is not on.
So what if you alienate the users on the network, your a computer person, which usually means your alienated already.
'Fear Effect,' 'Doom,' 'Mortal Kombat' and 'Resident Evil'
Why why why do we have to keep on hearing judgements, news articles, politicians etc constantly quote and use as example old computer games such as the above.
Have they not heard of the PS2, X-Box or Gamecube ?! Not to mention the latest advances in PC gameing. I saw pictures of Doom 2 in an article of similar subject matter only a couple of months ago, how many years has that been out for?!
Its like the differance between a childs story book and a novel, these judges constantly undermine the computer games industry by hearing as evidence works that were created years before the judgement they make is passed.
I know what im sending that judge for christmas (not! it would go to a home that would not appreciate it)
But I can bet the judge had fun sitting in his office shooting away at the imps! Before the judgement made he/she probably shouted "Finish Him!" and then struck down the hammer expecting some lightning to strike:P
At last, I was looking at purchasing a P4 in the near future but was worried that what I was purchasing would be a lesser version of what is now available from today. I wonder if this changes the RD-RAMs stability issues with overclocking. can't wait to see the tomshardware review on what they get out of it, some of the watercooling stuff they do is l33t!
After posting my first question without much thought I realised what I really wanted to ask was:
Do you think Microsoft will ever co-operate with the Linux/OSS community and the ideas it represents? Do you think it will need to in the future?
I was half expecting an "Okerly-dokerly" after reading a few discussions on http://www.neighborspace.org/ The guy sounds like Ned Flanders he's so enthusiastic about not much...
The only line I'll be standing in is my gnuttella queue:P Sure I'll go when my friends decide to make an event of it but other than that I wouldnt miss my exams for this...

I just wonder if 11 digits is enough?
Alastair Campbell wants to read your mind, errr, email I mean.
(one of PM Blair's spin doctors)
Do I wait for the above mentioned cards to come out or buy a top of the line GeForce 4 now?
I went home from work today
:P
leaving a computer running
wondering if I should turn it off
for this exact reason

Tele-dildonics for your PDA :P

Me - "Mr Russian Space Capsule Salesman, can I get this model with 12 cup holders, the neon underlights and TV screens in the back of the headrests?"
Mr Russian - "Im sorry sir, those models arnt due out of service for another 3 years..."
Me - "Dam, I'll go with the tin foil wrapped powdered dinner machine then"
Mr Russian - "How would you like to pay? Visa, Mastercard or AK-47's"
Me - "Can I part-ex for this reportedly genuine ufo t-shirt?"

Do you see a possible future where Microsoft and Linux work together - not against each other?
