Ah, after a quick look, I discovered that the most famous use of the phrase was by Marx, referring to the Russian Empire. The first time I saw it was in reference to the Ottoman Empire.

The "i" after the word is the genitive form; the genitive of fourth declension is in -us, as is the plural. Don't feel bad about it, I made the same assumption for years until I looked it up in L&S, and I took 8 years of Latin.

If you had authorized the laptop, you would have been able to play from the iPod, but only if you DIDN'T synch. There is a program called iPodRip that you can use to copy the songs from the iPod to your hard drive and then add them to iTunes (and again, if you authorize the laptop, you're all set). The no multiple downloads thing is a bad idea, I think, but the one-way synching was a requirement imposed by the major record labels.

Correction: there were one or two late Treo-branded non-phone PDAs - they are distinguishable from the Visor by their shape and the absence of the Springboard connector. The Visor Deluxe I have is still running, beautifully; I don't use it, but rather use a more featureful but less rugged Tungsten C. It makes me wish the Visor line had survived.

The Visor was also the first Handspring PDA. Look it up: Visor, Visor Deluxe, Visor Prism, Visor Edge, Visor Platinum, Visor Pro, Visor Neo. All the Handspring PDAs (as distinguished from the Handspring smart phones) were called "Visor." For some reason, new management at Handspring decided to abandon the Springboard platform early and move entirely to Treo. Handspring was bought in its entirety by Palm - mostly to get the Treo line - and eventually disappeared into PalmOne after the BeOS NeXT-style Trojan takeover and the split of PalmOne and PalmSource.

You have to mark your affiliation on your registration??? WTF?! Who thought that was a good idea???

Historically, it was necessary to determine which primaries you were eligible to vote in: Democrats voted in Democratic primaries, Republicans in Republican primaries. A lot of states (like my own) have since gone to a system where you can register as "unenrolled," then select any (in theory; in practice, either) primary ballot at the primary. Taking a primary ballot effectively registers you in that party. What you then must do is re-register as "unenrolled" to retain your ability to select either primary ballot; but conveniently, there are registration cards at the polling places (only during primaries, and only for those who are already registered and want to change their enrollment). Nevertheless, a lot of people do still put their affiliations on their registrations, and it is possible that many states still require you to list an affiliation on your registration in order to vote in a primary.
