I work at an ISP that sells DSL and dialup in a ComcastOnline region. Not 30 seconds after I read this topic and told my coworkers about it, someone called us to sign up for DSL because he just recieved a call from Comcast saying he'd have to shut down his NAT or lose service. So it's not just a rumor.
I live in New Mexico and I know there's a rather large nuclear waste plant down south called WIPP. What's the difference between this place and WIPP? Besides the fact that WIPP is much closer to a large-ish city.
My suggestion is to start coding.:) Seriously, Napster was written in a dorm room, as were most of the other file sharing systems (substitute bedroom, garage, etc, for dorm room if it makes you feel better). People can discuss and discuss stuff like this but the only way to find out how it's going to work is to do it.
First you need to ask yourself if you really want to recreate the XWindows System or if you want to create a window manager like Enlightenment, fvwm, etc. If you want to recreate the years of work that has gone into X, that's your choice but I think you should look at creating a window manager, you'll probably get farther.
The New York Times has had those TechnoScout ads for quite awhile. As others have said, the word 'Advertisement' usually tips most people off. I think both the poster and the editor need to get out more and visit some websites every once and while, you might see more of what's going on in the world.
There's a world of difference between DVD players that you put in your computer and those that you buy standalone. I used to have the same problem on my computer with a few discs but since I got the standalone unit, not only is the picture far superior, I have no more freezes or stuttering on the same discs. To me, buying DVDs of movies I like is okay even though they cost more than VHS because the picture and sound are so much better plus I usually get a lot of bonus material as an extra. Just because they cost more doesn't mean they're not worth more.
Just so I don't get flamed, I know a lot of computer home theater people have great systems made up from DVD players in computers so they're not all bad. I just didn't get the best experience from mine.
Unifying the ID isn't really a big deal in and of itself. There's no danger to civil rights that people could more easily verify the validity of identification. The particular set of information they choose to standardize on is likely to be innocuous. The danger of a national ID is in the way it is used.
Poison gas isn't really a big deal in and of itself. There's no danger to people's health since it's hard to spread poison gas over too big of an area. The type of poison gas they choose use is likely to not kill everybody in the country.
The danger of poison gas is the way it is used.
Sound familiar? Why should people be allowed to carry poison gas around? Why should everybody who wants to see my full personal record be allowed to? What business is it of a private security guard in New York if I had my license revoked for forgetting to a pay a fine in Arizona? Why should I have to watch out for some clerk in California entering the wrong social security number for a child molester in that state and his record ending up tied to my national permanent record forever? There is no justification (no, not even the big nasty spector of terrorism) for a national ID system that can outweigh the trouble and privacy destruction it would cause. Period.
The problem with 2 tuners is that it would do nothing for most cable users (which I would guess is a large portion of their userbase). Even if my Tivo had 2 tuners, I still only have 1 digital cable box spitting out 1 signal to the Tivo so it wouldn't help me out at all. I so wish I could record 2 shows, or at least record 1 and watch another, but since I have to use a cable box it's not going to happen.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who wants to know if there's going to be an upgrade program/discount for owners of the now old school original Tivo boxes?
I guess now that the Series1 prices are going to probably go into a freefall soon I can pick up an extra and finally for the 100gig drive upgrade.:)
Microsoft's head of security works 3 blocks from the White House? The last I heard, the rest of MS campus was in Washington state, not Washington D.C. I would have asked him how the hell he effectively manages security for an operation the size of MS from 3000 miles away. He seems more like Microsoft's liason to Congress, not any kind of security manager. He's fully integrated into the MS management hive-mind it seems from the way his answers mirror what we always hear from MS executives. Wait a minute, maybe that's how he manages his teams at the main campus?:)
I actually do realize that. Ximian does however ask you to pay (https://store.ximian.com/index.php). I was pointing out why I would not pay for this service or for Ximian. Maybe I didn't phrase myself right.
If you're frustrated at users jumping the gun and posting unthinking messages, maybe slashdot isn't the site for you.:)
I'd be more than happy to pay for Ximian but I have a couple of big qualms so far. First, it obliterates the main menus in Mandrake and Redhat and replaces them with Ximian menus. wtf? Why not just add a Ximian section to the existing menus and leave people's configurations alone? Also, Ximian Gnome doesn't seem to integrate very well into Mandrake. It took a long long time to get Ximian for Mandrake 8 out and it Red Carpet still breaks things somewhat often that it doesn't break on Redhat.
I don't use or pay for Windows because it doesn't work. I use Linux because it works. I'm more than happy to pay for software or services that work but until these types of problems are resolved I think I'll stay with the old non-pay mirror system and live with the slower speeds.
O'Reilly seems to be getting into bioinformatics pretty heavily and while I don't think any of their more advanced books will be out in time for you, a search for 'bioinformatics' on their website turns up a rather large list of hits.
I agree with the other poster who said you're probably perfect for the job as it is. Sounds like you've got good qualifications and in my opinion anybody who get any degree in biology can learn anything they put their mind to.:)
I'd hazard a guess that the Tarkin in Ogg Tarkin is taken from Grand Moff Tarkin of Star Wars fame. If I'm right (and please correct me if I'm wrong), what does the Vorbis in Ogg Vorbis mean? If I'm wrong about Tarkin I'd like to know where that comes from also.
When I first saw the TV ads for this movie, it played up the fact that the government didn't want to go after the downed pilot and that Gene Hackman's character was risking his career going after him. I'm sure I saw that ad twice and then never again. The new ads almost completely leave out the 'bad government' parts and focus on the heroic pilot and Gene Hackman. Did anybody else notice this little change in favor of patriotism and against the anti-government story? I haven't seen the movie so I'm not sure which one more acurately portrays the storyline but I thought it was interesting that the studio decided on that change.
I wonder if it'll be awhile before we see any more movies where the government and/or government agents are the Bad Guys? Would a movie like 'Enemy of the State' get made in today's climate?
The point is that @Home is losing money every day keeping the network running and paying employees. They lose money on every customer they sign up which is why they were told a couple of months ago to stop taking customers. The cable companies decided to give @Home extra money per customer so that they could keep signing people up but now the creditors are saying to shut the whole thing down so their money doesn't keep getting sucked down the drain. The creditors don't care about unhappy customers, they care about their investment. Since they know @Home is going to go away eventually, there's no point in keeping customers happy at the expense of the bottom line. They can at least sell the equipment and other assets after the fact.
Where did you see 8hour battery life? Here's the section from the article that you seem to have missed (as did the person who modded you up to 'Informative' it seems):
Battery life is adequate. As a phone, the Treo gets about 2.5 hours of talk time and 60 hours of standby time. With the phone function turned off, it gets about three weeks of battery life as an organizer.
60 hours of standby cellphone time is better than my current phone and 3 weeks PDA time is pretty darn good too.
Also, the Treo is meant to be pretty small, adding a Springboard on would add quite a bit of size and weight to it. If you want a Springboard slot, get a Visor.
The point I am making is, so what if someone doesnt release source to their program based on a released open source version? If it is significantly better than the original I dont believe they should be forced to release source. They put time and effort into it. I don't think programming is a worthless endeavor and I believe it has value. Making it value-less devalues the worth of programming itself.
The point is that if I release my source for anyone to use and I choose the GPL, I'm saying that I don't want you taking away the freedom from somebody else that I gave you. It's not devalueing the worth of programming at all, it's making sure that if I create something of value and chose to give it away, you can't come along and use my code for free but not contribute back to the common good. If you want to keep your software closed and not contribute to the common good feel free to, just don't use my code as a base for yours. The only freedom that is taken away is your freedom to steal somebody elses work and pass it off as yours.
Most stores have some sort of "price guarantee" that if the price drops or you find it cheaper elsewhere within a period of time (a week to a month usually) you can get the difference back. I just bought some network cards at CompUSA and BestBuy had them on sale for $10 cheaper the next day. I was able to get the money back from CompUSA with no hassle. So you're probably not out of luck if you want to get your $10 back.

I figured it was some new use for Pilot that I didn't recognize. Kind of like calling it a 'waste isolation plant' instead of a 'dump.'
I live in New Mexico and I know there's a rather large nuclear waste plant down south called WIPP. What's the difference between this place and WIPP? Besides the fact that WIPP is much closer to a large-ish city.
What makes you say that? Just because it's studying people and not fundamental functions of the universe? Where's the drawing line?
I'm just curious.

Well I guess I haven't been looking hard enough. :) I figured they were still up there but I don't think I was looking at refurbs. Off to ebay I go.

I'm sure I'll be the first of many to say please fix the HREF in the story. How did that get past the editors?

Excite@Home business plan:
:)
1. Sell $1000 worth of bandwidth for $40
2.
3. Profit
Sorry, I had to do it.
