"RHEL was way too expensive and Fedora way too unstable for such use, Red Hat left no alternative except to go elsewhere."
Not true at all. We migrated all of our production servers from RH9 straight to FC1 and then to FC2 and only saw performance and stability increase. I did the same on my home workstation, and only saw performance and stability increase. The Fedora kernels are stock 2.6 with some small additions, plus the Alan Cox patches. Now, if I were to want to try to stabalize the 2.6 kernel, I think the first thing I would do is grab Alan's patches.
It is obvious to anyone who has actually USED Fedora (and I don't mean you installed it on your home workstation and played with it for a few hours), I mean really used it on high traffic production servers, that it is a very stable and performing distro. Sure it has its flaws, but as somone who has USED many distros, they all do.
I have had zero crashes with 1.0. I think it seems much more stable than any release prior.
I am amazed that this was a front page post on/. Ridiculous. One person has a flaky install and the editors make it seem like it is a widespread problem!?!?!?!
Yeah, this sounds like a great idea. I am beginning to believe that AT&T's net ops dept is filled with idiots.
My office is subletting space off of another company and using their AT&T business DSL. Roughly 2-3 months ago, all ICMP out of our network stopped. So, I get on the phone with AT&T. After a lot of getting bounced around to higher and higher support people, I finally get a hold of someone who tells me that AT&T is now blocking all ICMP across their network "for security purposes". Brilliant. It is not as if ICMP is a useful protocol or anything. So much for any remote monitoring of our servers with a simple ping. So much for using traceroute or ping to debug simple network problems.
Now they are intending to break SMTP.
Seems that by 2006 AT&T will have blocked most all Internet protocols because they are "insecure". Can't wait until the brains at AT&T decide to block TCP/IP!
Actually, tivo does allow you to mimic the replay jump forward 30 sec funcitonality. It is a disable feature though, so it must be turned on through a remote control key press combo. I don't remember the sequence off hand, but I have switched mine. Allows me to skip through the commercials even faster than just fast forwarding. Vey nice.
I also just bought 2 x 120 GB drives for upgrading my DirecTivo and also ordered the wireless networking kit so that I can control my Tivo over the web (as well as perform my daily dial-ups over my DSL as opposed to dialing in).
How about something as simple as rm -i ??? Or the many solutions aliasing rm to 'mv.trash'? Or...
Seems to me that we have a hundred diff ways to accomplish the goal of making it difficult to delete a file. Now, do I really want to delete a file. Well, if I type rm, then I am pretty sure I do. And, I do not make mistakes with this. Sure I did when I was a junior admin. How do you think I learned to be careful before deleting?! How do you think I learned to not use root for general use?!?!
Besides, I hate the concept of the trash can. On my windows machine (gameOS for playing Counter-Strike) I have my trash can disabled.
... and get fairly good performance out of it. I think much of the bad press out there about the poor performance of Tomcat is due to people running it straight "out of the box" without tuning it at all. I was able to nearly quadruple my initial benchmarks simply by doing some basic tuning. I for one think that Tomcat is a great application server, especially given the price tag!:)
No, I fully understand why people use fake email addresses (fear of spam). I do it myself on many sites. But, if you use a fake email address, you can't expect us to actually be able to send you an email.:)
The member list has a little symbol next to those users who have RSVP'd.
- We send email to everyone who signs up to notify people of winning venues, to try to get people to RSVP, to notify people of venue changes, event cancellations, and a few other things. We do our best to keep the user well informed of what is happening. Perhaps people did not use real email addresses. We do tend to get a lot of bounces right after a mailing goes out. Also, please be aware that just because you have 50 members in your chapter, you may not have 50 RSVP's from these people. Many people sign up, realize that they can't make it, and do not RSVP. We can't really force people to attend or not to attend.
- We hope to improve our venues available to vote on via user suggestions. As we are organizing local gatherings for people, we know that the locals will know better than us what the great venues in their area are. So, please feel free to go to http://www.meetup.com/suggest/venue to let us know your suggestions.
- As far as poor hosts, please keep in mind that these are fellow/.'ers who have volunteered to help the event run smoothly. They are useful in helping people find each other. We do not expect the host (or anyone for that matter) to force the conversation any direction. We are simply trying to arrange gatherings for people interested in similar topics (i.e./.).
- Please feel free to contact us via our support email (support@meetup.com). We do our best to reply to everyone who sends in, and we also take seriously all of our user problems, complaints, and suggestions.
Hi, this is Greg from Meetup. We are considering merging these two areas together, but will not be able to have our system ready to handle this before this Meetup (tonight).
However, we are sending out an email to the Boston members to suggest they attend the North Boston Suburb.
Just FYI, the venue in the North Boston Suburb is:
Gallery Café 5 Cambridge Parkway Cambridge, MA
Here is a map from the original venue to the new venue:

Seriously!!! That GPL licensing is insanely hard to figure out! Baffling?! I just gave up and installed Access.

Ever since I saw an episode where Alton was teaching how to grill I have hated that show.
...
His method of cooking a steak involved
- turn on your gas grill
- use a thermometer to set it to exactly 325
- close the lid and relax in the sun for exactly 7 minutes
Talk about destroying the art and joy of grilling! Why even use a grill? Why even cook?
I run several servers with FC1 and have zero problems with them. Direct upgrades from RH9.
Programmer is not a computer scientist. DB admin is not a computer scientist. Network engineer is not a computer scientist
Hmmm, sarcasm was wasted on you I suppose.
These people just need to firewall port 25 and the problem is solved. Remember folks ... security == firewall!

Right, but it takes more Windows admins(i.e. trained chimps) to admin a large Windows network than Linux admins to admin an equally sized Linux net.
Hence the reason I bought a DirecTivo (DirecTV reveiver and Tivo in one box which pulls schedule over sat and has a single common interface).

Seriously ... when is Java 1.4 coming to OS X? Seems like I have been waiting for some time now.
Tomcat can be tuned if you spend some time with it. We get very usable performance out of it.

Yeah, but then I have to code in PHP as opposed to a real language like Java! Yucky! No thanks! :) Flame away!
