Funny - but true... Cure the symptoms instead of the problem.
As a Boston resident it is painfully obvious that a fraction of the cost of the Big Dig directed towards building a state-of-the-art train system would have been far more effective, and long-term, solution.
Dont know if its too late to reply - will try anyways...
As one Slashdot reader once posted (sorry, was a long time ago and I forget who) - AOL is like a pair of rosy glasses that a user can put over their eyes to look at the Web with... It dumbs things down, but some think it makes things a heck of a lot easier and makes the Web a lot more useful. (to each their own)
But no matter what AOL does, I will *never* have to use their service... The worst thing that they can possibly do to me is to secure the next LOTR trailer a week before it goes public. Thats it. AOL is, and always has been, a choice, and that is why I hold no ill-will towards them.
Contrast this with MS... When I want to play the latest game, I need to use a product from a company I do not like (Windows). That sucks. If at some point the latest game requires AOL, then I will be the first to admit that you were right - but I dont see that happening anytime soon.
In the meantime, if AOL can convince John Q. Public that he does not need Windows anymore - more power to them! I am in their corner!
... I am still leery of trading one enormous, controlling software giant for a enormous, controlling media conglomerate. I don't want to be a naysayer, but extrapolating into the future produces a need to keep one eye on this bunch, too.
Because AOL would not own the OS, and hence would be in no position to jockey into other markets at will. AOL being popular on Linux is not nearly as dangerous as MS is now - and as other posters have mentioned, might go a long way towards convincing users that they dont *need* Windows.
Che's book "Guerrilla Warfare" clearly states that guerrilla fighters are fighting for their country and its people, and that they are never to do anything to hurt the populace they are supposed to be helping.
Che was also a big fan of Stalin, even going so far as to sign letters home as "Stalin II" sometimes. I am sure Stalin killed a lot more civilians than FARC does/did. Though he is a fascinating character and no doubt did a lot of good in the world, he was not perfect.
However, given time most gaming will probably be on consoles. It just makes sense to most people. I just hope there will be mods available.
I dont see it that way at all... Console makers have to be careful not to make their equipment and software too "complicated" or they risk losing simplicity - the console's main advantage over the PC.
Its a slippery slope... They are already making keyboards for their consoles - a desired move since now players are chatting online via their latest game... But where does it stop? Soon they will have a mouse because more and more first-person-shooters are going on the console, or because its a lot easier to use the level-editor to make a mod. Mods, of course, will require hard-drives - which, as we all know, die out not all that infreqently. Hell, while we are at it, lets allow you to ftp into the machine and upload mp3 files which you can play while you game.
Before too long, you have a full-blown PC gaming experience.:) And at that point, why not going with the added power and total flexibility of the PC? The cost difference is minimal once you take into account your buying four controllers at $35, a keyboard, mouse, $200 for the system, $40 for the network card, $10 a month for online access to your favorite game, etc...
I personally think the two gaming "worlds" should stay seperate... Consoles are perfect for the "in the living room," simple, social gaming experience, and I hope they stay more or less that way in the future.
My thoughts exactly... I love playing Super Monkey Ball with my buddies, but that does not mean my Gamecube is about to replace my PC for everything...
Consoles and PCs fulfill two different types of gaming. The console side, being simpler and typically "in the living room" will always be more main-stream and hence will sell more than PC games. But I think there is plenty of room for both in this rapidly growing market.
Aside from the fact that you employ language such as "fatties" --- you are 100% correct!:)
Those people that are suing McDonalds because they could not stop eating their product should simply be taken outside and shot... Its that simple.
Frankly, I am disgusted that the requirements for "rational human being" have been lowered so much in the last 10-20 years... For god sakes - take some F'n responsibility for your actions. Smoking, drinking, eating McDonalds - Its YOUR choice... What is this world coming to... *sigh*
I can't recall any significant company that has genuinely lost business due to its poor treatment of customers.
I can only speak for myself, but I much prefer to give my hard-earned dollars to companies that, at the very least, dont "treat me like shit". However, this usually occurs on a very small scale. For instance, this month I am not renewing my agreement with Sprint as a cell-phone service and instead am switching to AT&T because Sprint screwed me on a rebate. When I call up to cancel I will tell them as much if they bother to ask.
I know it sounds corny, but I encourage everyone to take responsibility for their purchases... Consider each one a small vote. When you get pissed off with a company, make the effort to move to a different one if possible. Even better, let the company know why they have lost your business. In a free market you should rarely if ever have to give a single cent to a company you do not like.
USA IS NOT THE GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD
Easy to spout that out, but then who is? If the US is not the best country (remember, most folks speak of the best country as far as opportunity for the common man, not global politics), then exactly which country do you think holds that claim? I do think the US is the greatest country to live in, and I challenge you to show me one that's better.
Damn, I am so sick of these childish claims and allegations... THERE IS NO ONE GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD! Take Greece... Everyone who has ever vacationed there has had nice things to say about it... Yet recently they just outlawed video games. That is a little too socialist for me, thank you very much, but hey, that is just one more attribute of Greece that I must take into consideration when deciding whether I want to spend time there.
The USA, likewise, has many good and many bad points... Australia the same.
You sound like fools when you spout out opinions as fact. You might as well argue over the best movie of all time or the best color.
Though I would have worded it differently, I agree with this view... In the long run, it is probably more effective to drop huge loads of Beatles CD's and walkmans over these countries rather than straffing them with AC-130's. All it takes is one generation...
I want standards too - I just dont want one company dictating them. MS visciously fights open standards in favor of proprietary ones because they want to retain their stranglehold on the industry... You may not mind severely diminished consumer choice, but others (such as myself) do.
The parent post did not even mention bin Laden or Al-Queda... Are you on drugs? (if not, perhaps you should be). Also, the post was a criticism of the US moreso than a "GO USA #1"-fanboy post... You are stunningly misinformed.
Oh come on - Do us a favor and dont wrap the DMCA in the cloak of the "American Dream." The last thing the DMCA seeks to protect is the "health and well-being of decent families." Yes, the DMCA protects some good'ole American corporations, but at the expense of what/whom? Why should this relatively small group of corporations control what could alternatively be an open and free market? Would you want other markets controlled by similiar bodies? It is interesting that you are defending the DMCA from what I perceive to be a capitalist viewpoint, when in reality the DMCA is the antithesis of capitalism.
Relax guys... He was trolling - Ignore it and move on.
To give everyone some piece of mind, however, i am going to settle the "my country is better than yours" problem right now: America is a relatively nice place... There are other relatively nice places. None are perfect.
Now, maybe Ill get around to solving world hunger and then call it a day...

If the US and Castro are such archenemies, why does it have a military base in Cuba?
See Spanish-American War.

Fantastic biography on Che if you are interested.

---- I messed up the link, but it appears as if it might not be an issue for much longer after all - so, bad example anyways...

good quote though

Yes its a little annoying, but if it bothers you so much, why are you reading this? There are other slashdot articles to check out...
Relax and give the developers a little credit... Slashdot rocks and the web would be a much more boring place without it.
Go hug your Mozilla plush toy ...
Fine - I will!
*storms out of room*

Not really, no.
