Not trying to troll here, and maybe you don't even ascribe to the mindset you imply with the above line, but how can you "overtake" a project that's "in a continual state of catch-up"? I'd have to say, Java or no Java, NeoOffice has held the top of the hill for a while now. It may fall behind now (or it may not), but to deny it was out front to this point is just Washington-level spin
Easy Neoffice works without X11 so OpenOffice needs to catch on with that first and also 100% intergration with osx would be nice like neooffice has (cut and paste with apple keys. als 100% font support like neooiffice.
Neooffice is for now the best choice if you want to use openoffice on a mac.
But time will tell if OpenOffice will be better.
I use inkscape for all of my logo designs and it workt fine but you some times need Illustrator just to het de PMS colors right for the pre-press. But any version of illustrator will do even a very old version. So that won't break the bank.
The payed the guys from digital for it. and OS/2 is also parts in it as well microsoft is still paying ibm for using there source code in windows. And ofcourse there are no logo's on the box... They payed for that as well. Why do you think nt runs on MIPS and Alpha and Intel not because of microsoft. but because the digital guys.
Work Excel -> from macOffice just bought it Windows NT is made by the guys from Digital and I thought some guys by SCO. And they just made extra feature going to 2000 -> XP
Xbox they made them selfs and it doesn't sell... need I say more....
I agre with this with security patches you need to have them as fast as you can.

I have ben using WP for the past 8 year never had problems. If you take word for that mater It crashed on me to many times allready and counting.

Not really because they lose money on every x-box sold and if we can run free software on it nobody wants to buy the expensief x-box games...
