Corporations want to feel secure. They want a brand name. They want support. What happens if the boss hears the name "Hacker's Linux?" You can expect to hear an immediate dissertation on the order of "We don't want software for hackers -- we want software that gives us support and quality! Get that UnitedLinux product in here!"

The name "Hacker's Linux" will make the downloadable software totally unpalatable to the corporate world. And, because the corporate world is the only targeted customer base for UnitedLinux, this will virtually eliminate any loss of revenue otherwise expected from providing ISO images.

  17. Interesting but on Review of Embedded Linux Book · · Score: 4, Insightful
The only disagreement I have with this is Hollabaugh's philosophy regarding non-x86 architectures. He contends, "This book's examples show that working with the [ARM-based] MediaEngine and the [PowerPC-based] RPX-CLLF was as easy as working with the [x86-based] MZ104."

This assertion is hard to credit -- even with the author's well-written scripts, acquiring and building cross-development GNU toolchains certainly takes more time than simply using those already provided on your desktop computer.

Hollabaugh had to modify the netcat source in order to compile it for ARM, show that even the author himself has had his share of trouble working with non-x86 architectures. The lesson is certainly not that x86 should be the only architecture considered, but it is fair to say that a slight bias toward x86-based devices is prudent when choosing embedded Linux target platforms because of the maturity of Linux on that architecture.

  21. Re:Non RIAA/compulsory licensing on SomaFM General Manager Answers Your Questions · · Score: 0
The compulsory license is provided by the DMCA. The Library of Congress is only charged with determining the royalty rate thereof. But the compulsory license only applies when you can't get the copyright holder's consent. This license agreement is that very consent. The copyright holder (Artist) is granting permission to a specific broadcaster to reproduce/transmit their work (Songs) under a set of terms.

The term of the license should be a set number of years, with the provision that either party can withdraw from the agreement with 30 days written notice. That gives the artist the chance to relicense the music to a higher bidder. It's their music after all, it should be their choice. You can play it until they say otherwise. If this exercise was about free-as-in-speech music, you wouldn't be paying them 25% of revenue.
