Well, if your relationship with Blizzard is good and you really feel like part of the team, I'd say go for it! If you think they're just stringing you along, I'd reject the counter-offer.

It really boils down to how much you think you can trust them.

  6. It's amazing how far this language has come on Web Database Applications with PHP & MySQL · · Score: 0

From a Perl script to a full blown niche programming language, PHP is growing like gangbusters.

What's great is that you don't have to use a crippled database like MySQL with PHP, there's no longstanding history or anything tying the two together. Much more capable databases (Postgres, JET, Oracle) can be used with the same amount of ease.

PHP really takes to heart Perl's kitchen sink mindset and puts everything that would be useful to the web developer right at his fingertips. This book looks like a worthy addition to any web dev's bookshelf, though I see it sitting on the desk wide open a lot of the time ;-)

If you feel the company really wants you to stay and isn't simply keeping you around to finish the current project, then I'd say stay.

The points on that page are very good, but it all really boils down to your relationship with your employer. If you feel like part of the team and you feel comfortable with the people you work with, stay. If you think this is just a ploy to give you your raise early and give you nothing when evaluations come around, then leave.

Once they allow downloads off the web, even at lower cost, the music distributors have simply turned over the keys to the kingdom to the pirates.

The solution would be to distribute the online music with some sort of system that prevented piracy. That would entail DRM, something which the Slashdot zeitgeist doesn't support.

  16. Re:I'm confused too on The Economics of File Sharing · · Score: 2

In the past few years since digital piracy has been made accessible to the masses, the record industry has debuted several VERY popular bands.

The popularity of Britney Spears, N'Sync, The Backstreet Boys, Eminem, and others has brought them many CD buying-fans. Not to mention that the economy during this time was booming and disposable income was trickling down to the preteen and teen age groups.

No numbers have ever been released that show that groups other than those most popular (and hence crappy, by some definitions) have increased their record sales one iota.

I sincerely hope that you and your companies will benefit greatly from this standard. Humanity at large certainly will.

I could fill volumes with accolades. Instead, let me simply say two things. I have been honored to have worked with such a great group; I appreciate the raw intelligence; the mutual respect; the dignity; and the integrity represented in our Task Force; I have never worked with, and doubt I will ever again work with a better class of people.

During the last 3 years, I have received a significant number of compliments regarding my work as chair. I have attempted to graciously accept these. But, I have always known, and attempted to make it clear, that my effort was not and is not of primary consequence. The credit truly belongs to you. This isn't some insincere attempt at humility. It is, simply, the truth.

    Congratulations, Well Done,
