    Thing is, even though some of those changes were done by programmers in the course of their paid jobs, isn't the work still being "volunteered,"
    No because large corporations like Oracle, and in particular IBM do little or nothing which does not benefit them somehow. So the work is not volunteered, it is a component of an agenda.

    God what a devastatingly witty repartee.

    I can only assume you consider OSS to be in the what you pay for is what you get category, a zero sum gane of zero. And interestingly after paying and getting nothing, a lot of people would rather willingly commit a criminal act and pirate the supposedly useless commercial offerings than continue to use OSS because it fits their needs better.

    From the bastion of a community where release early, release often is the motto, regardless of the state. Doesn't have a feature you want? Write it yourself. Wrecked your system? Sorry we have a take it as you find it license.

    Lol. Microsoft has been doing it and is still doing it for years. People don't stop using Microsoft products do the
    I knew someone would come up with this. The difference is, and its a massive difference is that Google can deny you access to your data at any time they choose. With MS you still have physical access to your files, free viewers and converters, Open Office.org etc to access the information contained within so while incovenienced you can still carry on your business. Google shutting out your account leaves you with nothing.

    Any company prepared to trust the bulk of their communication and data to a third party with those terms of service is nuts anyway. Everybody seems to be overlooking the 'we can rip this service out from under you at anytime we feel like it' and the 'we can impose arbitrary restrictions on your use at anytime we choose'.

    You probably guess correctly. But how hard will it be for Google to persuade companies to upload their databases to Google servers? My guess: Seriously difficult to sell.
