I dont think you can really blame the coders, who in a lot of cases are only doning what they are told. The designers/'artistes' who fail to come up with a concept which caputures the gamer's imagination and is playable are a greater liability here if you ask me.

They are already well down the path to this approach in the Java arena with their SWT implementation, with a lot more success than MS it must be said.
