I would certainly agree with these sentiments, particularly given the timing of the announcement when its traditional to support proper charities assisting those less fortunate than ourselves.

What I find particularly annoying about this is the fact that several for profit companies are leveraging the gnome codebase in their commercial offerings. An oft repated mantra on this site is that its a labour of love for developers to work on OS projects, apparently this is not the case with gnome. If the gnome project wants to be taken seriously then surely they must prove that they are at least capable of self sufficiency, rather then relying on dodgy requests for hand outs.

Without wishing to troll why is it available to the public at large than and used as a main browser by so many subscribers to this site ?

More seriously though I think this bug demonstrates that the differences between open and closed source development may not be as great as some would suggest. This is one of those embarassing situations where the release has highly visible bugs discovered by the end users/client after release. High visibility stuff like this does nothing to engender end user confidence and may in fact be more "damaging" than a less visible but more serious security issue.

That said mozilla is still a cool browser and I look forward to many more stable releases.

  20. Re:foreboding sense? but what if the software's GO on More on Longhorn · · Score: 1

I think this maybe over simplification of the situation. MS Licence revenue increased largely because many customers were trying to put off dealing with the forthcoming more expensive and restrictive subscripton based scheme.

MS are strongly driven by "compatability" and integration, for their own products at least and I think there are some interesting point in the article. A sort of follow on from XP masking lower level details from the user. The next logical step would be a single unified metaphor for application access with lookup type resource location.

However there are still many technical challenges to be overcome and as we have seen promised technically advanced features do not always make it into final releases from Redmond e.g IMDB in W2K. While its good that future requirements and demands are being considered now it will be interesting to see what actually gets implemented. Also there is the issue that while compatability and integration of this sort can be a good thing, is it really desirable to have a single corporate entity pulling the strings ?
