The fact is once we go in decline there is no stopping it. We now have a little bit time to change or energie habbits and to secure your future.
Peakoil might even be good for the locale economie. I don't know however I think things will look bleak and we will go to a dark page in the history of human kind. Why, because the politicians arn't taking this on top of the agenda and transform our economy from Oil based to "solar... based".
We will have to come up with something. They say peakoil was in 2005 November... That means every year less energie. After 2010 3 to 5 % less oil each year. The energy crunch will be devastating if we don't change or out smart this problem.
I think solar power is the only option. I read on slashdot it goes now to 40% efficiency.
RMS is an excellent philosopher. He is the man we as programmers, nerds, and thinkers always should listen to very carefully. RMS has some bugs for sure but you can work around them. I wonder sometimes how computing would be if he wouldn't be so hard fighting for digital freedom. GNU/Linux would not be here today. We would have to use mainly proprietary software. Even for your web applications it would be hard to get one free.
Even if you don't agree with RMS you always should at least read and listen what he has to say. And make arguments why you don't agree, don't simple say he is ******.
I'm very happy that once again he defends FREEDOM with GPL 3 and will make the company's who want to use copyleft software play nice with you and me. I hope we (nerds, programmers, it-users) will use GPL 3 and help RMS. It is after all in our best interest to do so.
Hmmm, seems the will make people install a plugin that will be hard to find. So home users still won't be able to see ODF documents and won't understand how to install the plugin. Microsoft still hates it that they are losing the battle... Well people they still could install OpenOffice.org.
I wonder how computers, gaming will be when we hit peakoil. 1. computers will grow more expensive to build... Al the energie to produce chips, moving them around etc...! 2. powering computers will grow more expensive!
So the logical thing to do would be to make the computer less powerfull and so cheaper to produce and cheaper to run. Would market competetion lead us that way after peakoil?

Welcome to the digital age. I sure hope the united states will come back to there senses in the comming 20 years. Giving up net neutrallity is giving up one of the core principles of the internet. Now internet wil be less easy to innovate and change the world. In return you get more and more control of goverment and Corporations. They should have nothing to do with content.
Anyway sounds like all you slashdotters, free software movements and even Microsoft, ebay people should gather and march towards washington in one big protest. TO ALL NERDS GET FROM UNDER YOUR ROCK AND SPEAK OUT

How can it be that a company with som much mony, skill can delay a product so much and even then it starts to look more and more to a failed product.
If microsoft fails Vista because of bugs, security problems or whatever it will be exit for Bill Gates & CO for the OS bus. And enter GNU/Linux wich is a very good choice.
There is a danger that GNU/Linux will get a bad name because it mostly installed on very cheap systems. Often these projects tend to fail and then the scape goat will be GNU/Linux.
Better would be that large hardware firms put GNU/Linux on there system. Just imagine Ubuntu on all Dell, HP... systems. That would be the break for GNU/Linux
I guess most of you don't know that Flanders is a part of Belgium. And Brussels is the captial of Belgium. I live in this contry. Jurgen Verstrepe is a member of the very right wing party in Flanders.
There is a law in Flanders that a politician can not have his own radio station. Radio shouldn't be partial ore biased to a certain political group.
This man run a radio station from out of Germany for a few weeks. For that he got fined. His blog was also seen as a radio station. I must say the law in Belgium doesn't has a clue what a podcast is or even what the internet is. Politics are behind the facts of today.
I don't understand why the tv channels don't give them selve Torrents out against payment or with adds. I would be happy to pay 2 $ per show... or watch some adds. If that would mean legal download!

The problem is easy enough solved. Instal GNU/Linux for your friends. Make sure they can surf the internet and get their mail. Explain ones spamassin.
