    We have seen this before, and we have seen the providers get back to good old apache after one of the massive attacks

    something similar here

    I mantain a subversion repository with my documents, all documents made by me are latex and have some word files too (from other people) but I can track my changes easily and mantain history on my latex files, as well as some simple txt files, and script that have generic use

    I have though on using SVN for my whole $HOME, some other people does, but I haven't had the time to come with a clean/secure implemetation

    I guess you haven't noticed that google is not that interested on elegant degradation, they provide alternative version of the same app instead.

    Look at gmail, and any other app, most of them don't even have alternatives (maps, earth).

    I don't know if they could do better, but the do good enough for me at this point

    I even has it's home edition called ubuntu, and is way more stable on server and destop versions, has way faster development, and the support is quite good when you are polite enough and ask the right person.

    Thanks for giving linux the credit it deserves by admiting that having our on M$ is what makes us better

    the real reason is that it must be really smart to attack enough boxes, and even then most of them would keep infected for very few days at top, what's the point on infecting/cracking a box that will be patched really fast, you can even get detected and tracked back to your home, that's not good at all.

    with all my respect, you don't know a piece of nut about what you're talking.

    I don't use bsd, and I respect it, but I havent had a hacked linux machine in years, and I have administred quite a few connected to the internet giving several services.

    It takes work, as much as in any bsd must take, and most of the time the kernel is flawles, what failes are services with bug or holes.

    I would love to know whish compiler you used to compile your kernel, or the person who did compiled it.

    you havent compiled a linux kernel in your life isn't it ?

    I have used gentoo for a few years most of the time with mm kernel, o vanilla, and it has ran just as expected, much like any debian one (and posibly better than a redhat one :), hell ! I even compiled my own kernels 6-7 years ago when I used RH and MDK on my desktop PC ! with no problem apart from knowing what hardware it should support on config.

    How those statistics are for linux/unix/bsd ... users If cookies are considered spyware most of us would have some of it on our boxes, but apart from that :)

    I think the best way to promote something is making it good, Linux is Good, GNU tools are GOOD, they are used, they are popular because of the popularity of Linux, not the other way around, and there was a time when the kernel was not easily compiled with gcc, and linux was already popular enough, now everything is doable with OS, that's great, linux and GNU had a lot to do with that fact, but I dont see GNU giving any credit to linux for its popularity, do you ??

    Why would GNU/Linux make sense and not GNU/BSD/apache/Linux... you get the point, I'm not the first to say it, but It does not make sense for me.

    The moment RMS starts to vow to linux, maybe Linus could start thinking on giving RMS some credit and probable some distributions would start to talk more about the GNU part.

    That's like saying everthing using GPL must have GPL on its name.

    We have enough with the kde/gnome naming issue, please don't do it with gnu/gpl !

    BTW, who does not give credit to gnu ?? If what RMS wants is to be as famous as Linus he should be still coding good SW, I give credit to GNU, GPL, Linux, BSD, and most people does too, the ones not giving it are using windows !

    actually both theories are subject of quantum effects, even when they are really hard to detect, but you can tell by the way those theories are probabilisticly determined.

    You have really high probability of seeing a brick crash against the floor if you drop it, but you have a low probablilty of seen the exact same animal to came out of his mother, genes are a lot and they mix, bricks have a really narrow way to the floor, hence more limited in their possibilities

    exactly the same here !!

    I compensate it by letting her sleep later on the morning, the most amazing thing is that I wake up at 5:30 in the morning every day for work (Mexico city !), and I do it perfectly, but If my wife tries to wake me any time earlier, she just can't.

    I live in México ! I have a decent job, and decent wage, but with a family, you simply cannot afford to spend money on tech. I live with the urge for a good cell phone, a nice USB memory, a good DVD burner, a better CPU, any kind of digital camera, but the money keeps going with what really matters, my family :-) That's the kind of living of almost any person here, my wage is in statistics above the 95% of the population, and still can't afford those tech beauties :) third word rules !

    I cannot search that easy remotely to my 400mb email account on my personal server, thats a good point for me

    The interfase of gmail is quite good too, conversations make my life easier on emails.

    And I have nothing to hide, if the read my emails it's ok to me ! The most I can lost is money from my credit card, and I dont own one !

    I'm ok with their ability to look at my info and pics, so does flickr, yahoo, hotmail, and the obnisious big brother !, how many emails from you travel encrypted ?? I can bet no more that 10%, if any at all

    Or any OS project

    Im in a few OS related mailing list, and make a little contribution with 1 project (officially) and try to help in any way I can whenever possible with any OS project I use.

    If I had a regionalized internet I would lost like 50% of my interaction (at best) and would not share oppinions and thoughs with a lot of people.

    Right now I don't care if the other side is on neatherlands, colombia, my country (mx), usa (like most of the internet people) or anyother place.

    Is it enought to make you forget about that so bad idea ?
