My point was intended to be that the problem with groupware in general is that it requires a central server. That is a problem with the system, not the individual implementation.
I was sort of trying to imply that a groupware system that used the group itself as the repository for the group information would be preferable to a system that relies on connection to a dedicated server alá exchange.
Wasn't there a ximian exchange client? what happened there? Ah, I see it's novell now... from their adcopy it seems that you can access exchange from 'Evolution,' I suppose its support is limited though?
true, true, they can, but I'm not so certain about the latter part of your statement. I have successfully played apple itms bought tracks in realPlayer. I don't have any really good reason to, but I tried it anyway. don't know if this really makes an answer for you as it was stiil on my mac, and I believe the drm may be system level.
there is a subtle difference in the two cases you mention though. MS Word will always (to my knowledge) default to the most recent Word format to save a file. in order to save as.rtf you have to select it manually every time. itunes will default to what ever codec and format you desire (that it is capable of) mp3, flac, AAC etc.
comparing -purchasing- a drm'ed track with -creating- an.rtf is a somewhat disjointed comparison. Does MS sell.docs? for that matter will a drm'ed.wmv play on an ipod?
besides the itms is there to provide content for the ipod, that's all. to provide a service to those people that purchase an ipod. It has been pointed out ad nauseum that apple makes no money from itms or itunes.
but, as I remember, your question was initially, to show what, if any, difference was there between MS's monopolistic tendencies and Apple's new tendencies. and simply put, I think the major difference is that with the apple program, you can set the default file format to be the open shareable variety, and unless you change it, every file that you rip will be of that type. with word, I know of now way to set.rtf as the default file format. if I rep a song using itunes, I can be sure that it will be playable in any other mp3 player. with word, unless I specifically request it. it will only be openable in the newest copy of word.
I use iCal and it does for me, personally, especially since it syncs happily with 'basecamp.'
But this is just for me. The real strength of Outlook, (as it has been mentioned before,) is really it's connection to an Exchange server. The problem is that it ties you to an Exchange server.
If anyone has ties to the P2P networking world, *This* and not simple file sharing, would seem to be the killer app.
can you imagine the ability to link and unlink with various groups and schedules via a peer to peer protocol? If there were a convenient way to connect a group of people's scheduling etc. without having to maintain a central server? and be able to segregate the views based on selected groups?
hmmmmmm.
though I suppose that you always need a central server for those who only occasionally connect, but that might be relatively easy...
Plus, gods know it depresses the hell out of me when I spend all day in a dark, windowless office, and walk out to go home and realize that I just missed a gorgeous day...
All the more incentive for me to join the idle rich!
Apple sells lots of iPods because they are popular and easy to use and high quality (I think so anyway.) Of the many varieties of mp3 player, more people choose the iPod.
Microsoft sells lots of copies of Windows because they have 'forced' manufacturers to include their software on the manufacturer's product. Of the many varieties of personal computer that are out there to buy, all of them (unless you build it yourself (or buy an Apple)) will come with Windows. (okay, okay, Linspire.)
When you buy an mp3 player, each manufacturer chooses the player's OS. when you buy a computer, Microsoft chooses for you. the only computer manufacturer that offers an alternative is Apple. While every mp3 player works differently. However, all mp3 players can play all mp3s (except perhaps those from sony) word processor files are a bit more problematic.
has anyone checked recently to see if you *can* play itms music in other players? I was under the impression that you couldn't play itms songs in other applications, but have noticed that they can be played by realPlayer for instance, but I only have the ipod so I can't check other players.
It should be pointed out that any software that comes with a dongle is similar. I have a Lightwave dongle, and the documentation basically said "insure this for the full value of the software, if you lose it, it's not our problem, we will not replace it." IIRC the 3dsmax and A/W maya docs say similar.
From their perspective, there is no way to prove that you "lost" it. you might have given it away.
I rememeber reading a book about hubble, where the author went into some detail about de-convolving the images. They got very excited by some odd ring like structures that seemed to be around distant, bright features.
Prior to the installation, there was some discussion about whether the cost of COSTAR was worth it, because the de-convolution was working so well. It was already showing things they had never seen before.
When COSTAR was installed, these structures dissappeared...
Opinions vary on the author of course, but the stories he tells are interesting to read.
I only meant to imply that 'molestation' (or at least misconstrued attempts at dating,) would be more hazardous as the students are trained to beat the crap out of you (and for that matter, kill you.) The one that I work at has a policy of being ultra-Politically Correct, (don't know if that's true at the others,) with regards to the staff and students, (mostly, you should hear some of the cadences they use when marching. (particulary odd when used by coed 'platoons.'))
I don't have any other problems with the school as an entity. It's much like any other from inside. I'm a civilian too, and intent on staying that way.

but even work related documents, any file you are currently working on could be filed under "urgent fix" as well as the individual project name, this could be good for the busy freelancer... (for source code, anyfile containing//TODO:)
Already I tend to use the star ratings in itunes more as an organizational tool than a quality rating, just wander through the list of songs, this is 2, this is 5 this is 4. and a playlist for each level. for more permanent things, I put a term in the grouping field, a keyword or something, the stars are something I can change on the ipod on the fly though. so rather than just the on-the-go play list, I have five play lists that I can screw with without touching the computer. now if you add the labels, (8 or so of those,) you already have 40 different classifications (if you assume one from each group...) that you can sort your stuff by. add some overlapping keywords, and content references, yeah I could kiss folders good bye... but on the other hand, if you have dependent search 'folders' it might be nice to nest them, for instance, 1 folder for all items with//TODO: and inside that 'folder' perhaps subfolders that are searches limited to that 'folder' (search within these results.. knd of thing.) one for each project or something. I don't know, just spitting out ideas now...
1 and 2 I think are true at almost any U. although 1 varies. I have gone through a stretch, of three months now with no actual work, (I work for an adjunct commercial arm of the U., (things have been a bit slow.)) other than some self-generated infrastructure stuff. Four project have been on continuous hold for some time now. That stretch of boredom alone is one of the bigger reasons that I'm leaving. (regarding 2, we had a great admin, reimbursements were *very* fast!)
As far as 3 goes, I'm currently at a military U. I may be one of only two pacifists there. (that is another reason...) Not so much right wing as Ultra-PC. Still a bit disturbing finding yourself occasionally surrounded by heavily armed/hormonal teenagers discussing the kill zone of the modern hand grenade. And the cafeteria is something I have only braved once.

As far as the hockey team went, I don't think we were accredited with NCAA or anything, when I was there the oldest guy on the team was 42.
I'm wondering if one could use the concept of the folder/pathname etc. as part of the metadata construction...
I agree, I separate many things by folders when they have nothing to do with each other, but if metadata application could be as 'painless' as folder picking, then I could go either way.
to a large extent, isn't this how files are stored on a disk anyway? files are at addresses, and folders,(directories) are lists of addresses. add multiple pointers(folder names, metadata) to those addresses and it seems to me that you have the concept of symlinks but in a sort of upside-down in kind of way...
perhaps rather than choosing a single folder, you could have a "click all that apply..." list... hang on, let me call my lawyer...
wouldn't it be easier to just sit in the bucket?
I'm in northern vermont, and with the humidity and all, I'd rather take an ice bath than have a slightly cold breeze...
