I managed something like that in college, while setting up a Wavefront render (2.0 for people who like to date things)
I don't actually remember what I did to make it work, but I had a render running in the background after logging out that no one noticed for three weeks. Some people noticed that the system was running a little slowly, but I could never find any indication that the process was running at all. (Except for the fact that every hour or so a new file would appear in the frames directory.)
On the other hand it might have been a brute-force attack of the problem. try everything until you get an answer that fits. Arthur's node only got so close before the RMIs stopped coming. If you look at the human race as being a genetic algorithm, I could see that a baby would have been born at the precise moment with the answer as a tattoo on its face.
(though I suppose if that were the case, this would have been a sequel to "the Omen" or something...)
I always thought the standard unit of measurement was the RI.
"the iceberg was twice the size of Rhode Island," "Orange county, CA is 16*(RI)" "Delaware is slightly larger than RI." "the cockroach was half the size of Rhode Island," etc.
I used to be annoyed at this when I was growing up there, then I escaped.
just a little research for the curious... apparently the shape of the shoulder relates to how much sediment in the wine. the more sediment, the sharper the shoulder to catch it before it ends up in your glass. though as with so many things, the standards have been corrupted by the whippersnappers.

sorry, next time I'll do the research first. (chagrin)
of course there are all those northwest pinot noirs in the sloping bottles, and chardonnay's in shouldered bottles, so this doesn't hold up as well as it used to...
like so many things, bottle shape has become a fashion, and not a signal.
does anyone know the reason for the original bottle shape differences?
Actually I already had, some time ago, I'm just happy to see that it's being returned to the distribution.
I find the story of its creation very inspiring. I wish they had been paid employees during that time, for their benefit, but it's the group effort from everyone else involved that I wish I could be around more often. (if ever)
I would very much like to work in a place surrounded, (if not necessarily led,) by people like that.

well I guess there's nowhere to go but up!
regarding the other point, I think yellow dog has an OS for mac hardware as well, and I know ubuntu has a ppc option that runs very nicely on this powerbook. though I only really tried it for fun. gnome has improved a lot since I last looked, but not enough to make me "switch". (though you did say "sell" so they might not qualify...)
personally, I got apple because it works for me. and I like the GUI. it stays out of the way. my only real gripe is that the terminal is only 8 color.
I think that (r/w ftp) might finally happen when they figure out how to get the OS to stop writing.DS_Store files on every system it visits via every other GUI based networking option.
does anyone know if there is a way to inhibit this tendency? there are people here who find them annoying... I have a little shell script that periodically hunts them down on the server, but their presence is a pain.
I remember a social studies class in high school where one of the questions was to write down the preamble of the consitution.
you could tell when everyone had gotten to that question, because from various parts of the room you would hear quiet humming.
remembering this, I can't understand why people have such difficulty creating educational material that is good AND entertaining. I grant you that in today's light some of the 'political rock' songs are more than a bit jingoistic, (e.g. "shot heard 'round the world,") but still the genius of being able to put the preamble of the US consitution to a hummable tune? amazing to this day really.
given that he told me the story when I was a child, before that movie came out, (and I KNOW he didn't see that one.) I think they might have gotten it from a similar source.
why not? real player runs on a mac, doesn't it? I have it to play real media streams. and though I have resisted it so far, there is also a windows media player for mac as well, no? inconvenient yes, but certainly not impossible.
all of the above will play.mp3 files, but apple sells a package service. if you buy music we provide for our player, that we are required to copy protect we have the premier players for it. has anyone complained about wmp not playing itunes store music? as it is, it seems that lately it has been shown that the drm that apple uses is a bit weak. one could guess that they are leaving it weak so as to make it easy to remove should the recording industry come to its senses. (a guy can dream...)
I do tend to agree that it would be nice if there was interoperabilty, so you could buy any music online and play it through any player... there is always amazon.
the original plan for ntsc video was supposed to be 24 or 25 frames per second, but the government required interoperability with previously existing black and white 30 fps video.
<sarc>
even then they made it 29.97 just to be different.

as I understand the biology, this is already in hand. (forgive me ;))
since you are biologically wired to "wake up" about 5 minutes before you wake up, this would work out just about right.

"Hot"-black perhaps?
;)
Mr. Desiato gets so grumpy when people mistake him for other corpses...
this has already happened... ;)
there were still five minutes left to the program! it wasn't done yet!
of course it's not going to have been right.
for all we know arthur was just a unit test.
sheesh...
I think you'll find it's made of cheese.
I have it on good authority...

err... I use this feature in panther/safari 1.2, live-connect or what ever its called now was a feature of the upgrade from 1.0/1.1
there's even a bridge for mozilla et al. somewhere, (I've forgotten where source forge I think)

I remember, but wasn't it also "open-talk" or something for a bit as well?
the graphing calculator is back!
I see rendezvous has been redubbed again,
nom de plume or nom du guerre?
(pardon my unpardonnáble french...)
ah, italian style!

just remember to wet the loonie first, it sticks to the target better. at least that's what she recommended.
people that can, do.
people that can't teach.
people that can't do either, consult.
I have met people that break both the first rules, but rarely met anyone who broke the third.
