Millions of people lined up and camped out in droves in order to buy a product that proves that they "think different" and that they are not consumer drones like those people with that other brand of product.
Steve Jobs could have had penguins lining up to buy ice cubes.
But the DMCA, which is US law, had a lot with putting him there.
Almost ten years ago I said that when your "product" can be reproduced in the millions by a single kid using a $100 device and a mouse click, and hundreds of millions of ten year olds have that device, the ONLY way to stop it would be to create a global surveillance network capable of detecting these millions of people clicking their mouse......and then a global fascist government to go after them.
It's scary when I make such predictions and see them starting to become true.
It hasn't been mentioned on slashdot yet, but this week has seen a MASSIVE attack on NZB indexing sites, several have been taken down, others have been flooded with so many DMCA requests (despite not being in the US) that they can't cope with the load of them.
This is the beginning of the end of the internet.

You can only conclude that if you suck at understanding statistics.
General suicide rates include those who are elderly and disabled by physical and mental illness. People who can hold down any job like that are not likely to be seriously ill or aged, or young and emotional teenagers, etc.
Robots can't commit suicide from overwork. Not that that has a direct bottom-line impact, as asian workers are valued at less than a single iPad they make... but it has started to have a mildly negative impact on consumer opinion.
...that it's because in the last 200 years humans have had to live with exposure to chemicals that no life, not even our single-celled ancestors, had to evolve in the presence of... so now we don't have the tools in our genetic toolkit to deal with the effects of those substances that are completely alien to this particular Earth-bound strain of life?
they can afford an ad campaign in the tens of millions of dollars, then no, it won;t disrupt anything, because nobody will have heard of it.
Just like now, where nobody has heard of it. Do Wii and Xbox users know about this?
Know, they don't, and they probably never will.
Development does not make a product. Advertising does. Having been in the toy and gaming industry, I know that generally the product is advertised first, and only AFTER a certain minimum order from retailers is it then finalized and rushed into production.
If nobody buys it, it never gets made in the first place beyong prototype.
Xbox, Playstation, Wii, we like to think of these as tech items or electronics.
They aren't. They are product, they are toys. They sell when kids see ads and pester their parents. They sell when people see their neighbor playing one and they want to compete.
The only answer if for everyone to have at least part of their life be "underground," even if it's just being part of the underground economy (flea markets, craigslist) or having money stashed somewhere untraceable, using software you're technically not allowed to, etc.
It won't be long before the non-elite all have to be guilty of some misdemeanor(s) of some sort at least just to survive.
Actually I agree. Networking can be organizing a charity, or it can be selling Amway.
When I say I am not a networker and am more of a "do everything yourself" person, I am not claiming that as a virtue, far from it. Being a "do everything yourself" person is my main character FLAW. It's just that I recognize that in myself.
Most of my projects end in failure for precisely that reason - I CAN'T do everything myself. Almost nobody can.

for the TSA. It's the only job he's ever been able to hold down.
He's stupid and lazy, but at least he's arrogant. Almost killed my cousin, his wife, by convincing her that chiropractic should replace her insulin.
He's fiercely proud of the TSA.
I see.
So, since all companies spy on their customers now, it's not spying anymore.
Release the Ferrets!
Gypsies at a bargain?
That IS tempting!

At least it's not as bad as the UK, where you can have a town with a name that's written in eight syllables but pronounced in two.
(actually I have 16gb memory though)
those suggested specs.. not the minimum, but the suggested ones... and I can't even play all the way through Crysis 2.
Everything bogs down to an eventual halt during the massive alien attack on the aircraft carrier.
I don't think any Japanese-Americans interned in those concentration camps were waterboarded.
Dunno if that figures into your "living conditions are slightly better" comment.

Just a thought.

Just wait until commercial space flight begins and the TSA gets authority.
No more than 3 ounces of oxygen allowed per passenger. Must be sealed in a 2 quart size Ziplock.
Do you know anyone who actually uses "Windows Media" with drm?
I don't.
People use MP3s, mp4s, avis, and mkv files. Even if hey don;t KNOW it.
Who buys music in WMA format with DRM?
Anyone? Maybe a few, but not the vast majority of Windows users.
On the other hand, what percentage of Apple users use media with Apple DRM?
ALL of them.
Not to mention that most people don't know the difference between hard drive space, memory and how many photos they're allowed to upload on Facebook.
That depends on whether you use a computer as a tool or as a fashion accessory and status symbol.
Well there is error-correction for reproducing the lost smell bits, but it tends to make everything smell like bacon.
PepsiCo is hugely profitable and really doesn't need to "win the long term war" against Coca-Cola.
the amount of "white smell" if you use Dolby Nose Reduction.
Personally I think analog smells are way more realistic than digital.

two US Presidents.
Disregard for authority?
It's sad just how much now is characterized as "authority," including corporations.
