I own the wired version, and I LOVE it! Best computer purchase I made all year. The picture quality is great, and it's so easy to use. I know there are some linux set-top boxes that may do more stuff, but you just can't beat the ease of use this thing offers. I highly recommend it.
Great, now my arm can look like my keychain with a half-dozen different "rewards" RFID chips...
The added side benefit with all that junk in your arm will be when you light up the metal detector at the airport like a Christmas tree... and then the friendly TSA agent dons the rubber gloves...
NCLB is only a mandate if the school takes the NCLB money from the government. Working in the public system, I know of several school districts in my state who will NOT take the money simply because they don't agree with NCLB. So who is really to blame? Voters for not fully funding (and putting a priority on) schools and teachers, and politicians (who don't understand how the public school system works) deciding on policy that sounds awesome, but just doesn't work.
Hopefully every Slashdot reader does vote for their local school levys / bonds... I know we're all tired about hearing about how crowded schools are, how little teachers are paid... that's because it's true! In the Seattle/Redmond area a basic house costs $300k+.... how can a teacher who is paid $30k POSSIBLY afford a house, let alone an apartment? They can't... one city (Mercer Island... $$$ place) is so expensive that they are talking about building housing just for teachers.... a teacher ghetto of sorts.... I mean, come on! This just isn't right, nor is it fair... and that's why the best teachers who have real marketable skills (who really love what they do) are leaving the profession... not because they want to, but because of the economics of their situation... leaving the dregs to teach your kids.
I had an oceanography professor who was swimming with some dolphins.... she noticed that they were not playing a "rough" as they had in the past... a week later, she found out that she was pregnant. I really doubt that even dolphins could detect the type of vibrations described in the story however.
Personally, I'm glad that the price of diamonds is so high... I don't care if it's a monopoly or not. If diamonds weren't worth so much, there wouldn't be as much R&D dollars spent towards developing synthetic diamonds... and without that technology, the "diamond age" of electronics would be much much farther in the future.
Li tried again using a new class of laser that emits light in ultraviolet, and therefore shorter, wavelengths. That laser, known as a cold laser, cuts by blasting apart the molecular bonds that hold materials together.
By breaking molecular bonds in the cheese, wouldn't that alter the chemistry of the cheese where it had been cut? Could this inadvertently produce carcinogenic compounds (like when you burn meat)?
Like a lot of slashdotters, I had a computer connected up to the TV to play music and videos. My desktop PC died, so I repoed the TV computer for the time being. Still wanting to have movies and music on my TV, I bought the gateway connected DVD player. I love it. For $199, it was worth every penny. I bought the wired version of the player since I didn't think that the 802.11b wireless connection would be fast enough for some movies....All I know is that the specs say 3mb/sec max.... using the wired version, I have played videos with a higher bitrate than that. The video output is better than my PC could do, and the DVD player itself is excellent. I did check out the player that sparked the parent article, but got the gateway one instead... So if you're in the market for a networked player, check the gateway player out. There are also several other non-DVD video playing options (one of which runs linux I believe... and no, they probably can't be hooked together in a beowulf cluster) out there.... shop around, you might be suprised by your options.
Actually... you know all those old cell phones you have kicking around the place? Use one of them to call 911. I know my old sprint phones will dial 911 even though they don't have service.
We all know that a patent will follow from this "discovery"... can you patent something that is naturally occurring, and that 70-100% of us have already been exposed to?
I was reading the FAQ on this virus and it said that 70-100% of any given population has evidence that it has been exposed to this virus before. I may be wrong, but I had always been told that once you have been infected by a virus, you can't be infected again. If that's the case, does this viral "drug" only work on people who have never been exposed to the virus before?
I will say though.... This is truly amazing if it works as well as reported.
What you really should do is to write your reps supporting NPR. After the whole O'Reilley thing, they could use some political support. Since Bill is talking to the politicians, so should you.
Read the link. Discovery channel? History channel? Please tell me you aren't insulted by your "choices"....
your average CCD will detect IR. Don't believe me? Pull out your camcorder and aim a remote at the camcorder. It looks like white light.
I know where I live, we have CCD DOT cams at almost every intersection. It would be easy to pick out the car emitting the bright flashes.
I disagree. Radar detectors only affect one person really.... the driver (assuming they don't get into an accident). This device affects EVERYONE at the intersection. You're right though, it is for the selfish.... and when they are the ones laying on the floor dying of a heart attack because the EMT can't get there soon enough, they can only blame themselves.
Why are these devices not illegal? Seems to me that the intersection should take a picture of the vehicle using the device... if there aren't flashing lights, send a ticket in the mail.
Once people know that they will be fined, they will stop using it. If you can't deal with red lights, then don't drive.... it's part of the agreement that we all agree to live by when driving (aka "the law"). These rules are there to make driving safer for everyone.
It's not that bad to implement really, even in a small-ish environment. I'm just finishing up setting up a laptop VLAN even as I type this... I setup a domain controller on the laptop VLAN to function as a DNS and DHCP server for the new subnet. The entire subnet is setup as a separate site in AD. The trickiest part was really deciding what rules to put in place on the router between the two VLANS.
Here's a question to all the AD gurus out there... what is the BEST way of setting up such a setup in AD?
So I guess that means no SWK now? Who knows, since Lucas loves CG so much, perhaps he can digitally insert SWK into SWIII. Couldn't be any worse than Jar-Jar.
Here goes my karma, but snippy comments like yours annoy me...
okay, maybe you should buy a hard drive. If you have ever read the little slip of paper that comes with the drive, most drive manufactures calculate a GB as 1,000,000,000 bytes.
It's not exactly correct in terms of a binary GB, but it makes for a more impressive number on the side of the box. Since a company couldn't claim 120GB for the sake of advertising, and another number for the "tax", I believe the parent would be correct in stating that the tax (at the $.01/MB) would be $1200.
Why was the parent modded funny? A firewall is a perfectly usable, and valuable asset in terms of network security. It's true (and stupid) to think that this wall will never be breached, but it's a good first line of defence. At best, it will fend off an attack, probably it will buy you time, at worse, it doesn't help you at all. So if this 'funny' device buys you even a few hours, isn't it worth it? I know I have one, and I just went over the PIX config to make sure that those ports were indeed blocked while we weather the storm (and yes, my servers ARE patched).
I wonder how this works since SIM cards are pretty small.
Regardless, I like it.... to a point. Where I work, we have a lot of people who drive a lot of miles in their own cars. At $.365/mile, this adds up quickly (almost $1200/month). Even still, almost all of them cheat padding their monthly miles, or taking a very long route to get someplace. If they KNEW that they could be tracked, it might give honesty a kick in the pants.
Where I don't like it is when someone is spied upon and never told. That's just not cool.
You know, you can recycle your dead batteries, right? When I worked at Radio Shack a long time ago, we took in dead batteries and sent them off to be recycled. I'm not sure if this was just my store, or a company wide thing, but there are free recycling services out there.... so don't throw them away!
There is a firmware update you can download here

USA today says that it's made out of glass... couldn't this possibly break? Ouch. Then again, USA Today is known for their high quality journalism...

You're mistaken, that's the ITAA that keeps saying it... these schools just repeat it because it sounds good

mistakes = security bugs
Doh! You just caused one there!
