  1. Point of note on MIT Robot Walks On Water · · Score: 5, Interesting

Actually there are several people who thing that MIT's direction in AI has gone seriously awry. Marvin Minsky (though somewhat stodgy), has pointed out that MIT's focus in robotics is no longer on figuring out how to make things that do stuff for people, but on subhuman gadgets.

So, yeah they may be number one, but in a way, they've let down the old guard of AI researchers.

    Still, this is quite cool.

Dude if you think NPR is too far right, you need an ideology adjustment. NPR has the most even-keeled reporting of any news outlet in the US. They actually -support- everything they say. What's more they actually do in-depth reporting.

frankly, i'm kind of scared of what you think is unbiased if you think NPR is too far right

  3. Constitutionally Protected in some places... on Flash Mobs: Peaceable Assembly for Spontaneous Fun · · Score: 5, Interesting

However in places like columbus ohio, as far as i'm aware, it's illegal to gather more than 6 people in public places with out a permit from the city. So i guess it's protected so long as you jump through the proper hoops. Sort of cuts down on the spontinaity thing. (although, i don't think i've ever heard of such a regulation being enforced)

Linus seems to be getting more and more annoyed with each one of these interviews. Why don't all these various online news sites take a hint? ;) at least ask him about -something- other than SCO SCO SCO. Give the poor man a break.

Because of course, having "Hacked by Chinese" means of course that the chinese must have done it. :)

and US chinese relations haven't been all that bad actually.

Perspective is a funny thing. What can be classified as "life threatening" depends highly on the level of integration of whatever technology we happen to be discussing. Since computer networking, and in particular global networking has become so vital to the economies of the world (and hell, life as we know it. I met my g/f online first, long before we met face to face), it is not surprising that the people who are currently in power wish to make sure they have a firm hold on it. But, as always, government control does cut both ways. So is it life threatening? No. Is it threatening to way of life? Perhaps.

::grins:: The question is what sort of resolution people are looking for. He gets through all the change the huge paradigm shift, balance is restored into the world that the characters live in, if thats not a resolution, i don't know what is ;) The book ends with each character in a role of some sort for the new world order that's been established. At this point the chapter in each character's life has been closed and they can move onto the next one.

  8. Re:good hard sci-fi stuff on Top 10 New Sci-Fi/SF Authors? · · Score: 1

    I disagree with that assessment.

Compared to Snowcrash, the Diamond Age progressively moves very smoothly towards a resolution.

The book runs on a societal, personal and technological level. It shows the impact people have on technology, how technology impacts society, how society impacts individuals, and how individuals impact each other. What more do you want?

I'm not really seeing the resolution you're missing ::grins:: I'd write up a full out plot analysis but i'm not sure i'd help if you missed it in the book :)

  9. Re:Test speeds. on Air Force to Test Aeroelastic Wings · · Score: 1

I believe the point is that they don't want to try wing manuverability near the Mach 1 threshold. Since it is, you know, flight worthy, i would assume that the wings are rigid enough to withstand the rigors of normal flight for military aircraft (or they wouldn't be testing it). So all it means is that they're flying in a straight line until they pass through Mach 1. Then they go back to seeing if the wings still work for manuverability.

Though i would -really- hate to be the poor guy who has to check if the wings still work past mach 1.

  10. Re: Groovy on Ripping Vinyl Via Your Scanner? · · Score: 1

Actually, closed loop records (the kind that djs will use to play a continuous sample) can have tons and tons of seperate grooves. Friend of mine has 2 2x12 sets which each have 100 grooves each. I've also got multi-track records that have multiple grooves, for instance Younger Brother's the finger/Even dwarves start small. The weird thing about the Dwarves side, is that the inner track spirals in, and the outer track spirals out. Very strange.

The thing with nanotech is that while there are lots of new and different things you can do with it theoretically, there are developable countermeasures as well. Its just a whole new set of issues to deal with, even things like Neal Stephenson's The Diamond Age: or, A Young Lady's Illustrated Primer brings up tech and counter-tech issues.
