I agree that opcode compatibility is crucial (after all, that's what has allowed companies like AMD to strive, and in turn, brought down the prices of mainstream x86 processors). But if there isn't pin compatibility, then this means that you can't use one motherboard designed for Intel with a Via chip.
Now, it's true that this isn't the case anyway: you can't buy single Via processors anyway, and it has essentially always been the case that you have motherboards for AMD procs, and motherboards for Intel procs. But it's really too bad. Think of how convenient it is that you can take an IDE hard-drive and plug it in anywhere (even Macs nowadays!) Why can't you have simple "plug'n play" processors? Then you'd have real competition among all the companies...any processor on any mobo!
It could all be solved by a GPL'ed architecture for Mainboard/Bus/Interfaces. All it would take is someone to engineer it and then GPL it.
'When Rumsfeld says "coalition forces", it's translated on al-Jazeera as "occupation forces". Everyone is going to have their individual slant on how things are, but when you mangle a translation in that way, it shows intent. I find that disturbing.'
They're calling a duck, a duck. Not much disturbing about that, not that I can see anyway.
It makes me quite cynical that a 'hacker' who does little more than break into a system with no malicous intent or some kid coping mp3's is portrayed as being the scum of the earth, all while there is multi-million dollar white color fraud going on quite regularly and the the white collor fraudster will get a slap on the wrist while people like mitchnik gets made an example of by the courts.

In the future will the world remember us 'alliance of the willing' kindly? Will they think that the spin doctoring by our leaders justified our actions?
It's not that long ago that there was a leader who led Germany who was a brilliant orator and who was able to convince people that what Germany was doing was right. Now I'm not for a second wanting to equate the leaders of the 'alliance of the willing' to that particular person. However what I do wish to point out is that the majority in Germany at that time believed the spin doctoring coming from a position of authority. Are we doing the same now? I believe we are.
People can come up with a whole bunch of justifications as to why this action is morally right, however those justifications can equally be applied to many other countries that the 'alliance of the willing' is not attacking. Futher if those justifications are valid, wouldn't they have also been valid say 5 years ago? What has changed in the last five years, besides the sad but unrelated events of 9/11?
I surely hope that someone in power will see some sence and stop this nonsense before it goes to far, otherwise we will not be remembered kindly.
I wish I could get ADSL with a 5GB limit for the equivelent of NZ$65 in Australia. I would of thought it would be more expensive in NZ than Aus, not the other way around.

The maths, if only I'd done a double major instead of a major/minor when I was in highschool.
I'd tell myself to do computer studies as well (back in 1989), and stop thinking that computer studies is for kids who don't know how to use them.
Oh and when you had the chance to study science at uni the first time, take it up and major in computer science (the tech boom will hit a few years after you would finish and you'll make shitloads when it happens and there is a skills shortage in IT).
And don't spend all your money on drugs!
To self, don't freak out when girl asks you out. She might be pretty ordanairy now, but in a few years time you wont think the same. And get over yourself.

Is it moral to claim IP on an algorithm for 90 years + in some cases, when others could of thought up the same algorithm independantly?
You see them all the time over on BetaNews, people complaining because beta/alpha software is buggy. Weird world.
The absurdity of the idea that I should be able to own any arms I want is evident when you start talking about nuclear weapons.
Surely this would be a brill oportunity to bring the MicroBSD developers back into the fold. ;>
I hope this doesn't take of in a large way like sound on motherboard did.
Most news services here act like they are unbiased, however they rarely are.
