That's quite an assumption to make (along with a few other assumptions), that Mono will 'displace' a large portion of tradition Linux software development. Let's just assume all sorts of stuff that we have no reason to believe will happen and then derive the results of such assumptions and pass those results of as a threat. That always make a good argument to do, or not to do something. Not!

Where I know(India and now Middle east) yahoo and msn are extremely popular and AIM is virtually absent. And regarding your comment on not using yahoo, its a fine idea but not practical IMHO . Because people use it and if you need to chat with them, you have to use it(or something like gaim which speaks that protocol). Also, I dont think yahoo protocol is inferior comparing to msn and all. It has some cool features like offline messaging and "invisible mode" which seems to be absent in others (atleast msn, I dont know about AIM).

ICQ has both of those features that you mentioned. It's also pretty prevelant in Australia.

As has been stated many times before (to no apparent effect... but this is /., so why am I surprised?), Redhat increments major version numbers only when there is binary incompatibility. Right now there's no reason not to make this 9.1. If they integrate the 2.6 kernel later on in beta, however, then this will probably need to become Redhat 10.

I think this will be version 10 or X (or some permutation there of) regardless of the kernel version (or any other changes, binary compatiblity or otherwise). I've read press releases and interviews from Red Hat people that pretty much state that the consumer releases from now on will be test beds for the enterprise releases. Hense the jump from 8 to 9 and as far as I can tell the likely jump from 9 to 10 (or whatever versioning system).

The failure of the MS-Apple lookalike lawsuit is a precedent showing copying look and feel is A-OK. And the "SCO is Evil" crowd is naively believing it's impossible that the Linux Itanium code submitted by IBM is 100% free of code "inspired by" IBM's AIX team -- that is easily discountable by seeing the code, but it is certainly possible!

Even if the vanilla Linux Kernel contains some Itanium code which was contributed by IBM and inspired by SCO's IP (unless there are instances of cutting and pasting of SCO IP as SCO claims), as I understand it (with GPL issues, relating to SCO distributing the Linux Kernel, aside) that doesn't necessarily mean that the Linux Kernel breaches SCO's IP. It may certainly mean that IBM has a case to answer for breach of contract/trade secret violation (if SCO's claims are true). However that clearly does not excuse the defimation and slander being hurled at the Linux Kernel by SCO. A case could be made for all companies that sell products that make use of the Linux Kernel, whose bussiness's have been adversely affected by SCO's slander/defimation, launching a class-action suit against SCO.
