    We need to have a monopoly on violence, otherwise it gets to be dog eat dog very quickly. But a government that isn't held to complete account by the people is just another mad dog.

    So, just curious, how do you hold the guys with a monopoly on violence to "complete account by the people"?

    When a population is committed to opposing an invading force the invasion will never been finished.

    Umm, no.

    When the invading force is required (for whatever self-imposed reason) to be nice to the locals, a resisted invasion will never be finished.

    The USA could have won in Vietnam, if they'd not decided that invading North Vietnam was something they couldn't do. Giving your enemy a safe place means you never run out of enemy.

    Seriously, consider the possibilities for ending WW2 if the Allies had decided that Japan and Germany were off limits to all attacks - attack occupied France or the Philippines, no problem, but you're forbidden to attack the enemy homeland....

    Why, exactly, should Uber drivers get to drive passengers using regular non-commercial drivers' insurance?

    I once drove some of my daughter's friends home from a birthday party. Should I have had to have a commercial driver's license?

    Do remember that, theoretically, Uber/Lyft types aren't doing this full time, but more a matter of "I'm heading out to Walmart, anyone want to come along?".

    And yes, I know that theory and practice aren't necessarily the same....

    A "Yankee" means anybody from a place north of the Mason-Dixon Line [wikipedia.org] and south of Canada (or sometimes, to ignorant foreigners, it's a slang term for "American").

    More properly, anybody from north of the Mason-Dixon line is a "damnyankee"....

    Interestingly enough, when I used your search terms, I didn't get the results you got.

    Three times the rate of HOMICIDES for New York, but about the same for rape and vehicle theft.

    Of course, vehicle theft is NOT "violent crime" in the USA.

    And the other links shown on the first page of your search don't seem to agree with you that New York had "about 4 times the rate of homicides and other violent crime than London, as of last year"...

    Note I used the word "accidents" as well as "fatalities". The number of "accidents" has been declining.

    Increasing numbers of pedestrian fatalities coupled with a decreasing number of accidents makes me think the problem is pedestrians texting, not drivers doing same....

    US "violent crime" includes Robbery, Rape, Assault, and Homicide. Note that guns, in and of themselves, are not relevant to "violent crime". It can be "violent" with a gun, a knife, or a pillow over the face of the victim....

    I'm curious, what else does the UK count as "violent crime" ?

    It seems like inattentive drivers are already breeding at an alarming rate.

    Interesting you should say that, since the number of automobile accidents of all kinds has been declining steadily for the last 30 years, at least.

    As has the number of fatal accidents.

    And all this while the number of vehicles on the road has been increasing.

    They can't. The scope of their mission is defined by Congress. They are tasked with carrying out what Congress says. They can't unilaterally say, "We're not going to do what we're told to do."

    Interesting theory you have there. So, does that mean that the President can't just ignore Congress and do what he likes about, say, Cuba? There ARE laws in place, after all....

    There seem to be two prevailing concepts how to progress further:

    ...followed by population numbers...

    Note that the best guesses by the experts say that we MIGHT hit 10 billion before world population declines to lower levels than now. Maybe. We won't hit 15 billion without some dramatic change, like suddenly all the birth-control methods in current use stop working.

    Do note that more than half the world is reproducing at lower than replacement rates, including USA, EU, China. Immigration is the only thing propping up US/EU population growth to current levels....

    There are a number of markets/professions where the Google Glass would be ideal (a big one that I keep reading about is aircraft maintenance, have drawings and manuals available on command in front of the technician's eyes).

    The manuals thing applies to a lot more than aircraft maintenance. I'd have loved to have had something like that back in the Navy, for instance.

    FYI, Flak is a German acronym for Anti-Aircraft Artillery.

    It should also be noted that it wasn't terribly effective at stopping bombers. Note the second Schweinfurt raid as an example (considered to be one of the worst raids for damage to the attacking planes) - 291 unescorted bombers, set upon by both enemy fighters and flak, lost only 60 bombers (another dozen or so were so badly damaged they were scrapped AFTER they got back home).

    If, like a pulsar, it's NOT omnidirectional, then it's not necessarily so powerful.

    Caveat: it's crossing 5.5 gigalightyears. It's still pretty damn powerful, even if it's not "more powerful than a million suns"....

    However for many taking away power from powerfull people might feel as if it is taking away the American Dream where they can become one of those powerfull people.

    And for some of us, taking power away from powerful people means either:

    a) the only powerful people will be those in government, or

    b) taking away power from the government, since they're far more powerful than the non-governmental powerful people.

    Note that the more powerful any particular government is, the more worthwhile it is to bribe/buy that government to give you what you want. Which we see a lot of in the USA.

    Note that usage of "floor/story count" for buildings varies from place to place.

    As an example, in the USA, the ground floor counts, while in Europe only the floors/stories above ground floor count.

    Don't know how they count such things in China, and don't know whether there were typos in TFA or /. summary, so further deponent sayeth not.
