Seems like that much is pretty easy. Now when it can control my answering machine, my MP3 collection, and my garage door, I'll be ready to automate my soul.
Perhaps it will also read Slashdot for you and inform you when a story was already posted a few hours before.
I watched it from start to finish last week, and was totally unimpressed. Maybe they'll pull together some nice finishing touches in editing, but the story has been weakened from the book dramatically, there are a lot of holes, and I really don't think that's something that a big screen and big sound can save. I guess we'll see.
This mostly applies to the stolen corporate keys for XP Pro. Anyone using them (20 keys at last known count by Microsoft) will be unable to install SP1, and they will also be locked out from all future updates. Yes, I'm talking to you with the key that starts with FCKGW. I've always wondered if those letters were intentional...
I couldn't agree with you more. I've seen this happening a lot lately, with both MusicCity using Gnuecleus's code base for it's new Morpheus client, and NeoNapster using CDex's code. Neither of these companies violated the GPL in any way, but as soon as someone takes your work, improves on it, and begins distributing it, they're suddently stealing your thunder and "ripping off" the original project. That's what can happen when you use the GPL, if you don't like it, use another license and stop bitching.
Who are you kidding? Do you know a single person doing so? 4 years ago, I used to buy a new CD every week if I heard something on the radio that I like or was recommended by a friend. That's a lot of money over the course of a year times the number of people that do the same. Since the widespread adoption of illegal filesharing, I have bought a single CD in FOUR YEARS. I download what I want and keep it on my computer or burn it to CD for the car, sometimes entire albums. I know a hundred people doing the same, so seriously, who are you kidding?
And? ATi has dumped partial specs on XFree86 developers and said "here." 3D support for the Radeon series of cards is abysmal and non-existent for the 8500 and higher cards. 2D isn't that impressive either. If you want OpenGL form ATi, you can get it, though, with BINARY-ONLY DRIVERS. You're comparing this to high quality nVidia drivers from the start that get 95-99% of the Windows framerate? Gimme a break.
I'm afraid that you can't moderate an article -1 until you've actually read it, and it is obvious that you have not. The purpose of the article was to do exactly that, to dispel myths and rebuke flaims (you would have known this had you read it), and you've just restated the original post in your final statement. Is karma really that important to you? Seriously, it's not even a number anymore.
Why do you need to game over a weekend where a laptop doesn't suffice? Is there a reason you need a bring a gaming rig, and if so, why aren't you using a CRT to get some REAL gaming? This is pretty ridiculous, did you just want to see your name on the front page of Slashdot?
Linux boots into a network-enabled state, running a web server and telnet, which allows you to log into the box from another machine.
Holy cow, REALLY?? This new technology that allows you to "log into" another machine is really astounding, I'm glad I was here to see it first on Slashdot! What can I say, I'm impressed.
O'Reilly is attempting to blur the distinction, a common rhetorical tactic but one which does not advance his argument.
Actually, he's advocating using the best tool for the job, and that zealous fanatics that insist on using Open Source everything will get us nowhere. Your implications that O'Reilly is being paid off by Microsoft are childish, to say the least. What article have you been reading?
I really don't get this. The exact same thing happened when Morpheus used Gnucleus as the basis for their new product. Much like MusicCity, NeoNapster isn't in violation of the GPL and offer source for their application as shown. Isn't "ripping off" (derivative works) what the GPL encourages? There shouldn't be a problem here, if the project doesn't like someone else using their code, then they SHOULDN'T HAVE USED THE GPL.
That change pissed me off like no other in the Special Edition series. Han was cool because he was a bad-ass mercenary. He got down to business and got rid of Greedo because he was in his way. Now suddenly he fired in self defense because Greedo missed with a blaster from THREE FEET AWAY?? Truly awful.
Wow, a nice troll. Your setup is broken in some fashion, sir, be it your hardware or your driver setup. I've had no problem getting full 5.1 sound out of both the kernel drivers as well as the OSS drivers found at http://sourceforge.net/projects/emu10k1. Yes, even my subwoofer works (I'm thinking your's doesn't, period). Just a few hints.

Who cares? To the average person, Linux = Open Source = Free Software. That's good enough for me, the more people that are aware of anything along those lines, the better.
I've been able to find RG-6 at Best Buy, Radio Shack, and Walmart, for what it's worth. You have to search between a few different cable brands on the shelf, but it's there (in the Northeast, at least).
I think you're unclear on the conecpt of this trojan. Whoever replaced the file wants the machines infect to "phone home" so that he can use them for whatever purpose he has in mind. This wasn't a randomly chosen machine that they're all connecting too, obviously.
On my AMD 650 Mozilla takes longer to start than LimeWire.
That's related in any way HOW? They're completely different beasts. You've compared apples to oranges in an attempt to justify Java allegedly not being slow. Considering the rest of your statement, perhaps you're just a troll.
The installer will fail the first time you try to do this; please try to run the installer at least once more before asking for assistance.
Ummm, what? Why is the installer broken, and do you actually expect people to use it if it is? That's pretty disturbing.

Since Win2k, the key has been stored encrypted and hidden in the registry. It's probably easy to find, but you can't easily replace it.

Insert tastelass Slashdot-effect joke here.

Anyone know what percent of our national power is used on computers?
Judging by the unavailability of this site, I'd say not nearly enough.

I'd really like to see a pinball game based on Zoolander
I would pay good money to play such a game, but only if it was really, really, really, ridiculously good-looking.

You FTP server has obviously been compromised, when will it be taken down to be rebuilt?

You're assuming it beats RedHat and Mandrake out the door with their new releases. You never know, they're scheduled for early fall as well.
