Haha, and go from being a hardware company selling hardware with cheaper OS software to a software-only company that is competing directly with Microsoft? Yeah, sure you work at Apple. Sun will be next, I assume?
Does this mean we're going to see laptops take the same direction as deskjets? Please say it isn't so, I fucking hate paying for those refills, it's an abomination.
Gorshkov was convicted a year ago on 20 counts of computer crimes, fraud and conspiracy after being accused of helping Alexey Ivanov steal credit card numbers from U.S. online banks, e-commerce companies and Internet service providers, the U.S. Attorney's office in Seattle said.
Wait, so he ISN'T an innocent victim? Slashdot almost had me confused there for a second. Let's try looking at the big picture, shall we?
I'm not gung-ho on conspiracy theories, but the only explanation I can figure is that they're either being paid or bullied.
How many times can we go over this same point? It's the same for Linux and Mac, it's just not economically viable to develop software for something used by less than 5% of the computing masses. It doesn't pay, plain and simple, and companies aren't going to waste money developing with little to no returns. I await next week's Ask Slashdot with the same question.
They're allowing your to pirate music, movies, and software. Most schools block all P2P programs and that's the end of the story. What could you possiblye be complaining about?
Yeah, but apparently neither Pine nor Pico are free enough to distribute, even on the COMMERCIAL CD. Give me a break, Pine was open source before there WAS open source.
They have NEVER lost their meaning. A.0 release represent a major version jump that breaks compatability. In 8.0 it was glibc 2.2, in 9.0 it's GCC 3.2. These releases are binarily incompatible. Perhaps people should learn what a version jump is supposed to mean before they start spewing from their ass^H^H^Hmouth on Slashdot.
I dunno, why not use one of the many existing tools like Grip (my favorite) that will let you plug in any CD ripper or encoder out there (Ogg has been supported forever)? If you search Freshmeat you'll find a lot of them, most of which are open source in some fashion.
Why is this disturbing? The fact is, MySQL is a sub-par database. It lacks many of the features of commercial databases, and is blown away by many free ones such as PostgreSQL. Just because IBM and Sun support open source doesn't mean they're going to support BAD PRODUCTS. Let's use a little common sense here.
I'm impressed that these guys are still in business. With a complete lack of quality control, no one uses their components in serious applications, I had assumed they were living off deals with OEMs. If that's the case, then the OEM will keep up its usual 3 year warranty at a cost to themselves and it won't affect most consumers who are buying their own components (and not foolish enough to use WD). On a related note, I have a closet full of WD drives of various sizes that have been RMAed multiple times and I'm sure as hell not going to use them, feel free to pay shipping for them. =)
True, but it would have done Erich Maria Remarque proud (author of All Quiet on the Western Front, for the uncultured).

This is put out by the Gentoo people, not by Epic. What would you like screenshots of, the CD booting? Go to Epic's site if you want to see UT2003, there were plenty of links to screenshot in the previous article on it.
I'm still confused on why people think EULAs shouldn't be legally binding. It's a contract and you agreed to it, plain and simple. How is it the manufacturer's fault that you were too lazy to READ the damn thing?

How come people who can afford $2000 laptops can't spend 50 bucks on a Linksys WPC11 wireless card? They're dirt cheap and Best Buy and CompUSA are practically giving them away.
That wasn't the point. In the early 80's, most highways had speed limits of 55 (or lower). The gas shortage led to a lot of underpowered cars on the road (like that lovely 4 cylinder Mustang that couldn't make it up large hills). Of course there have always been cars that could do 120 without a problem, but there weren't many in regular use at the time, and the line "Let's see if you assholes can do 80" make sense for the time period. There is a distinct difference between that time and 20 years later when you can't buy a 4 cylinder car with less than 130 horsepower.
The best thing about watching those movies now is to think that 88 MPH might actually have been considered fast in the early 80's. Hell, I go 88 every morning on the highway to work.
I'd like to preorder 4.7, but not sign up for a subscription. Is there any chance of getting the discount on the 4 CD set, or will it not be up before it runs out?
I'm not sure what crack you've been smoking, but Mandrake 9.0, _the_ distro focused on the desktop user included KDE 3.0.3.

Are even technical users ignorant on how UNIX handles time, time zones, and time conversion?
Nope, technical users know that UNIX systems should be run using GMT, which doesn't observe daylight savings time.
Will it take beer and banana peels? I'm not buying it unless it has a flip top and says Mr. Fusion.

Mandrake started at version 6. Feel free to go look up the answer to your own question, I'm not going to do your research. Try Google.

Surely I wasn't the only person who feared that Microsoft had finally acquired the Holy Grail?

Xine plays Sorenson v1 Quicktime perfectly, just so you know.
The best thing about watching those movies now is to think that 88 MPH might actually have been considered fast in the early 80's. Hell, I go 88 every morning on the highway to work.
Why yes, I find that situation to be much more convenient than packing up my computer and taking it back and forth to work with me every day.
