Does anyone know how to disable the touch pad on a Sony VIAO running Ubuntu? Just disabling the device from System->Preferences doesn't seem to work.
Except NIO is usually not as straight forward as java io. It isn't particular hard to use either if you learn to use threads to handle the I/O and pass information through queues.
A 5.25" drive would have significantly higher stresses placed upon the platter. There would also be more area to have to physically move the head across.
Except that when going to a NTSC television, the full quality of a DVD can never be realized. Thus they ended up nearly the same effectiveness. It was much better then VHS, however.
I attempted to move to ATSC DTV back in May. I used to get some stations perfectly clear all the time, and others might have some loss of sharpness or echoes but still had perfect audio and were always watchable. If I took the time to tune the antennae I could get almost all of them in clear with no loss.
Since installing my converter box, television has become useless to me. Even the strongest channels result in corruption, screen blanking, and even worse complete loss of audio. Thus, I effectively am now unable to watch TV without becoming seriously annoyed.
I currently live in an apartment, so I am unable to install an outdoor yagi style antenna. Although, judging from my parents who live closer to their transmitter and have a nice yagi antenna it won't help in poor weather as they still get drop outs. The antennae I currently use is indoor amplified VHF/UHF combo.
Yes I could get cable. However, I should not have to pay for cable. Television has an official designation of it is to inform the public. Fundamentally, going with cable would mean I'm being charged for something that I should be free (and did in the past). Furthermore, 99% of the cable systems I've seen have poorer analog quality then I used to get with my antenna. My parents would get pictures that rival the best of DVD's or digital cable.
Hurricane Katrina also taught me, that you can still get a lot of information from a signal that is extremely snowy since the images are still discernible and the audio clear enough. Since we were staying in a rural area, I can only imagine that many of these people would not be able to receive any information other then by AM/FM radio in the future.
As far as I'm concerned, we are getting an inferior technology forced upon us. The standard should have allowed signals to be viewable for longer ranges and with no loss in audio (or at least degraded audio). Also, don't tell me their is the internet and newspaper. I have both. In fact, I'm also a licensed HAM. There are some things that TV is extremely good at, that no other technology comes close. Think of the recent question posed about the inauguration of President Obama.
I should mention anyone who is trying to peddle python against java against c are all barking up the wrong tree. Those are really all the same class of languages and offer no benefits over the other in terms of good practice, smart thinking, and great design.
Procedural is most like instruction list people are used to doing. However, it often leads to bad practices and sloppy coding.
Object oriented can be good, but few people use object oriented beyond procedural wrapped in a class. It also is often hard to represent a good object system on paper.
Functional languages to vary degrees are very nice if you didn't learn procedural before hand and can think of problems as smaller problems. People usually have trouble with them because they have learned Basic, C, etc.
Logic languages are extremely powerful in that you only describe what you want, not how it should go about being computed. That isn't quite true, but think of them as more of set theory and logic. However, they can be somewhat awkward to teach.
Direct X provides an all in one interface. OpenGL is just a graphics specification and is pretty much strait procedural. A lot of places would rather not have to do DirectX for sound and input and then also use opengl which feels somewhat out of place. That said, I wish more games were OpenGL. I love OpenGL.
He did do an extremely good job with the doctor. A doctor who seemed happy go lucky, yet at any minute could show signs of a nervous breakdown or go psycotic. I am not that impressed with the new guy. His rendition of the doctor is not nearly as good. It seems it is played two happily, rather then a mix of happiness, sadness, depression, and wisdom gained from so many years of existance.

I'd pay $.99 and $1.24 for non DRM before I'd pay $.99 for lossy DRM encumbered crap. But I agree, I think $.99 is too much for a song that I have to use my bandwidth to download, especially if I get limited to what I can do with the file after. What ever happened to the promise the CD's where supposed to get as cheap as cassettes after a couple years. Of course it never happened. But hell, if I could be a whole CD for say $5 bucks from the store I would.
I have not bought a album, and I have downloaded a single RIAA song that I did not already own on some piece of media in 2 years now.
Actually there High Definition TV doesn't necessarily have to be digital. It could be done using analog. Technically, digital TV still passes over amazingly enough... an analog wave.
Also, people say that digital is more efficent use of the spectrum? Is that because the pictures and all are now lossily approximated and compressed rather then being the highest resolution of a signal possible?
These are the things that keep me awake at night.
Cause it wouldn't be able to do a good job at it. Some of the instructions in x86 rely on the way that instruction executes. Breaking the instruction into lots of smaller instructions to accomplish the same task may result in horrible performance even on new architecture. Secondly, JIT code is not as fast as everyone will have you believe. It still requires a lot of management to make sure things such as the code has not been modified leading to yet another runtime. Most JIT's also only compile functions which are being used heavily.
Vinyl which had art in it was awesome. I have a copy of the the Jungle Book in very good condition which features artwork inside the Vinyl. I wonder how much its worth.
Kirk had plenty of demons... his just weren't internal. Bermans biggest problem is he doesn't know how to write a proper captain. All his captains seem weak compared to a Kirk, Picard, or especially BSG Adama. With out a strong captain its hard to make a the rest of the show believable.
You should play Dugeon Seige. While the engine was admit limited in what they could do, I don't remember seeing a load screen beyond the initial start of the game. That was so refreshing. Of course if games loaded like my old ones now do (in less then 2-3 seconds) I don't really care about loading anyway. Alas... 30 second or more load times is common now on the PC:-(
It was... and now look at it today. Commercials all over the place and even a lot of dedicated commercial tv stations (Home Shopping Network or whatever its called). As much as I hate most radio, if people switch to Satellite I only see it becoming worse and satellite becoming just as bad.
I will also second HeroScape. It is a lot of fun with relatively simple rules to start. Unlike most games serious board, you don't need to speed 3-4 hours reading rules before you can get started. You can play it in 30 minute intervals and even combine multiple Heroscapes for massive games. The board also makes a very good BattleTech board.
You do realize that at the time Q2 was released, very few compilers would give you warnings about the things you are complaining about. What is more interesting, is how many warnings I get for the same type of things while compiling the 2.6 kernal.

ITunes has no support for plugins? I guess Mac doesn't have anything similar to DirectShow either.
I ran Windows 2000 on a 486 and once you got 64 megs of ram (maxed out the system), it ran better then Windows 98 did at the time.
