You cannot pick C++ up in a few weeks. It's easily the most complex programming language in current use. Experience in an unrelated language or even C does not qualify you to be a C++ programmer.
Actually, GCC only optimizes at levels 1, 2, or 3. As much as some people enjoy putting "-O99" in their CFLAGS, it does nothing.
In addition, most distributions that I'm aware of compile with -O or -O2 at the most, since -O3 blimps the crap out of code and breaks some things. Gentoo uses -O2 by default.
The main argument made in favor of Gentoo's speed is usually that most distributions compile for somewhere between i486 and i686. Whether compiling with CFLAGS="-O3 -pipe -funroll-loops -fmake-stuff-go-fast -march=athlon-xp" really helps is up for debate.
How are you able to correctly leave the apostrophe out of 'looks' but not out of 'sees'? Is there any reason why an apostrophe should be in the latter but not the former?
In any case, many people do not want their computer to look like the Las Vegas strip. They want it to be usable and for text to be legible. Most eye-candy enhancements only decrease usability (except for window shadows, which do alleviate some of the flaws of the WIMP interface).
I do agree that the default XP theme is blindingly awful.
You know, it never ceases to amaze me that Slashdot has more "dissenters" than the "slashbots" they criticize.
For example, there's a massive host of conservatives (economic and/or social) here who constantly suggest that they're going to be modded down for their views. Of course, they rarely are, since a sizable portion of the site's visitors agree with them.
Beyond that, it often seems that there are more "believe it or not, I like Windows" types here than the stereotypical Linux zealot. Seriously, Slashdot doesn't exactly suck Stallman's dick. Have you noticed how obsessive people are about Apple here? I think the GNU zealots (of which I am proudly one) are greatly outnumbered by Linus-style 'pragmatists'.
OK, let's take this real simple now so you can understand.
Hitch-hiker's = HH = H2 Guide to the Galaxy = GG = G2
I don't question that a 7-year-old could read the books and know what all the words were. I question whether a 7-year-old would understand it to any reasonable extent.
"If a couple want the "benefits" of marraige, have their lawyers draft a 50-page "financial merger and caretaking of minor children and durable power of attorney" agreement and file it at the courthouse."
And thus only the well-off can get the benefits of marriage?
With GNU rm, you only get a prompt if a. you attempt to delete a write-protected file b. you use the -i switch, which some distros automatically stick into the global bashrc
This is just a cover for all the nukes they're planting across the US. Bastards.
I doubt most people hiring programmers really want someone who "sucks at some rather basic stuff," which was the point.
In any case, C++ templates are a major feature, and C has nothing like them.

Go to NaN and beyond?
Just like everyone's on XP now, right?
In 4 or 5 years from now when Longhorn is on most desktops, then we'll see. Lots of things can change in half a decade.

Cursive sucks anyway. It's less legible and definitely not necessary for signing your name. Most writing needs to be done in print, anyway.
Seriously, how similar is your signature to what you learned in cursive lessons?
FreeBSD doesn't have software suspend. I've used it before, and overall it's fine.
I'd say a significant amount more than half the people on earth, actually.
I use Linux. I'm not a Linux zealot. I'm actually not too keen on Linus in general, and I'd switch to another free system if it suited my needs.
Unfortunately, none do except for Linux. So I use it. No extremism there.

"drink DIET COKE"
Or water. Your bones and kidneys will thank you profusely. As will your urethra when you manage to avoid getting a kidney stone.
I would consider that a feature.
When I was two I singlehandedly defeated two street gangs and emerged untouched. Try that on for size, you punk bitch.

You must have been an awfully precocious 7-year-old if you understood just about anything about H2G2.
This law doesn't apply to him, unless he's somehow sharing unreleased media on his iPod.
And the President does get a salary, you know. A pretty decent stipend.
In the majority of cases, it is not a crime to violate copyright. It is a tort, which is what it should be.
You missed the point. Is the host of that forum responsible if a user uploads said files?
In 1992, there wasn't a spam and malware epidemic crippling systems and networks across the globe.
You're like someone in the 1980s complaining about not being able to have unprotected anonymous sex anymore. Times have changed.

Why is it NEEDED? If you want ActiveX, you can use IE on Windows and risk the security complications, many of which are directly due to ActiveX.
And this is a change how?
