Allow the user to decide how they want java to work might be a good idea.
I personally don't need java to compile anything. It's pure unnecessary overhead for a game or a website. I don't need high speed computations. Python or Ruby speed is acceptable. For a scientist that needs it , I would understand.
Java should be able to start and work immediately like Python and Ruby . Java implementation was faster perception-wise in previous releases. It's trying to do to much for too many people.

I knew somebody would be working on some alternative.
Instead of a complex hybrid why not a new language ? Half the opinions about Ajax is that it's not worth all the effort. Too complex.
What about Python or something new just for interfaces ? Something like Macromedia Flash ?
