"For example, in my state, if you get a speeding ticket, you are expected to pay the fine unless you show up in court and defend yourself. Therefore, guilty until proven innocent. In my state, if you don't show up for court, and don't pay the fine, they revoke your license and have a warrant out for your arrest. Doesn't sound too innocent to me."
Call me crazy, but if a cop *hands you a speeding ticket*, chances are he just clocked you at going *over the speed limit*. I know, I know, crazy stuff. In fact, by letting you come to the courthouse later, it's almost like you're released on your own recognisance before you see a judge. If you don't show up, then your "bail"/licence is revoked and you go to jail.
We're not talking about you committing fraud with no witnesses and no record trail; we're talking about a cop that looks at a couple numbers and notices that they're higher than they should be. My point is that, when you're given a speeding ticket, it's given with the understanding that you've JUST BEEN FOUND GUILTY OF SPEEDING, else you wouldn't have gotten the ticket in the first place.
Ha! Glad I bought Law & Order seasons 1 and 2 after all!
I think you're missing the point. I'm not so much concerned with getting rid of dead tree books (I love reading paper books for enjoyment); I would, on the other hand, prefer all my academic sources to be electronic. As I mentioned in reply to another poster, it's a huge pain to look something up on MLA or Expanded ASAP only to find out that my university doesn't carry it and the interlibrary loan system can't get it for two or three weeks because it's backlogged as it is. I could care less about the spiffy fonts and typesetting; give me the plaintext so I get my research done!
"If I could use one interface to search for books, chapters, and articles on a subject, I could spend more time actually learning, and less time looking at the same damn "no results" page on GeoWeb. Grrrr."
Or finding that perfect article in the MLA database, only to find out that nobody in Canada subscribes to the journal, nor does anybody have the journal on fulltext. I'd rather have a more comprehensive fulltext database in plaintext rather than digitalised copies of everything anyway - makes searching a hellova lot easier.
Seriously, I was expecting something in the range of $40-50 USD with all the hype here, but $19 a ticket?!? Might be worth it to head out to Surrey next year to see him to his one-man LOTR with such cheap ticket prices!
My father in law had a Thinkpad 250C (486 processor, 8" screen, circa 1991) that he used for several years, then passed down to my wife who then passed it on to me. It lasted for about 11 years before it finally died. That's reliability.
Keyboards on Thinkpads cannot be beat either, and as far as notebook computers go, that's the deal maker or breaker. Customer support is fantastic and extremely quick, which means that even if there is a problem they fix it quickly.
Like I commented in another thread, I'm really sad by this whole sale - I just bought a new IBM X31, and now I don't know what I'm going to replace it with seven or eight years from now;)
"At least Dell doesn't think outsourcing is all it's cracked up to be. Even seems to think it caused IBM's downfall in the market was because of this."
And yet, Dell's tech support is in India, whereas IBM's tech support is in the US. Hmm...
Sigh. There's a difference between made in China and designed in China. IBM notebooks have (for the most part) been designed in the US; coincidentally, they are also the most reliable notebooks on the market. Hmm...
Q: "How does Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs apply to employee motivation?"
A: Maslow? I could give a fuck about Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs - my hierarchy of needs says that I need this job. You want motivation? I'll go whack this Maslow guy, then maybe you'll be motivated to give *me* the job.
"oh, I stand corrected, they have a Carcasonne game."
Carcassonne *castle*? If I'm not mistaken isn't that an expansion? Imagine the look on poor Bobby's face when he realises that he can't play the board game he's just been given...
Carcassonne: Hunters and Gatherers is far superior to the original game, on the other hand. Extremely balanced and a lot less confusing than Carcassonne (balance sucks) + castle + rivers + traders + king &c &c.
You should live up here in Canada and try to get a decent shipping rate from the US! Media mail (i.e. a DVD or game) from the US to Canada is something like $2 USD, but sellers try to charge you $7-10 because it's "overseas" (one US seller said this, I kid you not). Even Amazon.com charges $6 USD for shipping up here.
You're right about low prices online, tho - I haven't purchased anything major in a B&M store for years. Free shipping and no sales tax (provincial) is your friend!
Isn't he at seven or eight already? There just comes a point when enough was enough. First four books were terrific. Ender's Shadow was really cool, because we got to relive the original from a different perspective. The rest? Meh.
To me, Harrison Ford *is* Indiana Jones. I'm glad to see he's back, but mark my words if any reviewer uses "Temple of Doom" in the review I'm not watching it. Ever.
Yes. Absolutely willing to pay the Thinkpad tax. I recently upgraded to a brand new X31 after using a 350C for two years, my wife three years before that, and my father-in-law four years before that. Nine years for a laptop is an awesome life span.
Keyboard is no good (bends all over the place, horrible quality). Gets extremely warm. Loud. In short, it's just not a lot of fun to use (as compared to my X31).
This might be the Japanese Final Fantasy 1 & 2, but it's being released here in North America. Last time I saw this news story I said to myself "So what if they're releasing it in Japan!" So there you go.
I'm a fairly conservative Christian and even I have problems with chick.com. Among the more obvious problems, even the supposedly "accurate" portrayals of various events are inaccurate (for example, child molestation in Sodom & Gomorrah). I emailed their site several times to protest this, but they basically told me to shut up and never email them again.
Heh... I've purposefully not done this with my IBM X31. IBM doesn't have a terrific policy on dead pixels, so I figure that, in this instance, ignorance is bliss - if I don't know about them, then I can't get angry if a) they're there, and b) IBM refuses to fix them;)
Most notebook manufacturers don't do this unless there are two full pixels stuck, and the DS costs what, a fifth of the price of a new notebook? That's customer service for you. The DS is looking more and more appetising...
From the article: "In an interview conducted by Bloomberg Japan, Nintendo confirmed that the Nintendo DS, its newly announced portable dual-screen gaming system, is not being created to take over the Game Boy Advance's market. The company also confirmed that a separate machine is being developed as a next-generation successor for the GBA. According to Nintendo's public relations chief Yasuhiro Minagawa, "The development of succeeding machines for the GBA and Game Cube are in the works, separately from the Nintendo DS."
Thank goodness. As much as I love Nintendo, I'm just not that interested in the DS - too big and too feature-dependent (i.e. touchscreen). I love my GBA SP and eagerly await its successor, whenever that might be.
VERY interesting to know that they will still be releasing GBA games, though! Didn't know that!

Fucking brilliant. Absolutely fucking brilliant. If any movie theatre did that where I lived, I'd actually go to the theatre again.

I don't celebrate festivus, you insensitive clod!
Well, guess that explains it - only had to deal with hardware a couple times, never with software.

But IBM notebooks are designed by IBM, not spec'd out to China for manufacture and design. Big difference here.

Call me crazy, but if the guy ran off with the money for the rights, then how is this contract binding? I don't get it.
Pretty much the same as movies - when was the last time a kid got carded for a 14A movie? Same thing with games w/ "teen" ratings.
