  1. $250 on Nvidia Launches New Affordable GPU · · Score: 5, Insightful

    $250 makes for "a new low-cost, high-power graphics processor"?

  2. Write the LA Times on Macrovision Releases DVD Copy Protection · · Score: 1

Garcia; you should submit what you wrote (#11678672, I mean) to the LA Times. Assuming they have a letters page like most papers.

I like what you wrote; more people should hear these sorts of points (especially thing like unskippable "FBI warnings, commercials, etc").

  3. Not the Point, at All on Gamers Are Good People, Too · · Score: 3, Insightful

But, see, that's not the point. "Prove we ain't all badz gamerz" is just a rallying cry. It's not the reason, not at all.

The thing is that they've set up and streamlined a way for us to genuinly make a difference. It's an effort headed by some guys that we, as a community, know and trust. It's a theme (games as a positive distraction/passtime/playtime) that I'd suggest a large selection of us here can identify with. And it's more personal than your average charity, since we'll even get to see pictures of the results, when all is said and done.

This is a great thing, and I hope it's just a beginning.

Anyhow. Kudos to Gabe, kudos to Tycho, and the same to everyone helping them out, and to everyone (including you) who're donating to this or other causes.

  4. A Question on Games (and a selfish word of thanks) on Ask Neil Gaiman · · Score: 5, Interesting

    Mr Gaiman,

I absolutely loved The Dream Hunters. It was actually my first introduction to your work, and has stuck with me ever since. The final conversation between Dream and Matthew (or their equivalents) still fascinates me.

I'll resist the temptation to trail that comment with the obvious question ("When will you collaborate again?"), though, and move right along to the following:

Do you have any particular thoughts on the stories of modern computer & console games? Is the medium in any way interesting to you? What would you expect to be the potential & notable challenges and/or rewards in working in the medium?

Also, if you don't mind, I'd like to ask what you think your ideal "game" project might be, and what sort of style you'd like to work with (or create), if given the opportunity.

By style, I mean do you imagine that it would be a sit-back-and-watch-the-occasional-cutscene affair (as is Final Fantasy X, or Xenogears, to give examples), a detailed backdrop in which to set gameplay (like, say, Mario Bros., Zelda, or Street Fighter), a more environmental story experience (Half-Life, Halo), or something else entirely?

Apologies for my wordiness in this question; I mainly would just love to hear your musings on the subject, especially if you find the field or medium at all compelling.

(And I would, predictably, very much like to thank you for all of the great work you've produced and shared with us all.)

    Thank you.

    Seriously.

They're confusing anti-aliasing textures (ie: making them smooth out instead of pixelate when up close) with FSAA (smoothing out the whole screen/scene, trying to reduce jaggedness, etc).

    These are totally different.

Just read the response from Gabe that gedanken linked to:

  9. Played at E3 on E3 Controller Previews · · Score: 2

Regarding "Steel Battalion"... people need to see what the controller is before they comment on it. It's not a 40-button gamepad, for goodeness' sake. It's more of a flighstick-from hell. Two joysticks, foot petals, different toggles, switches... even a little hatch-protected eject button. Follow the links above before you shoot off your mouth. ^_^

I played really-quick (about five minutes), so I can't say much about the actual game, other then... well, its very sim-ey, and horribly complex.... which I'm all for. It seems to be the polar opposite of the XBox Battletech game, so everyone might be satisfied come this fall (and we haven't even mentioned the Robotech game, heh). I thought it was really neat, but, honestly, it may very well end up being a poor game with a neat concept. It's fun to play pretend with that set-up, however. ^_-

(Personally, I adore the idea; this is something I've always wanted, ever since I read about those Battletech pods at the CES, years & years ago.)
