    How is a private corporation that has to make money to continue its existence going to compete with a government organization that has little to no accountability?

    And MS is oozing accountability? After all, they were found guilty of anti-competitive business practices and were punished with . . . punished with what, exactly?

    . . . a new system is emerging called Regional Code Enhancement. This system adds another layer of security to select Region One discs - preventing them from being played on region-free DVD players. But a more likely scenario is that Region Coding will be abandoned altogether . . .

    Since when have the media cartels ever actually learned their lessons? I find it much more likely that they will simply be more restrictive with their security.

    JanneM is completely right--Ken Lay _never_ stayed overnight at the Clinton White House.

    For those of you who believe the parent jackass, snopes has a great writeup on the numerous lies being spread about Clinton's supposed ties to Ken Lay.

    Clinton did many, many things wrong--he was not a faithful husband, and he let down both his wife and his daughter with his philandering; however, he is _not_ an evil man. Why people blame him for everything from 9-11 to corporate scandals is simply beyond my understanding.

    This was modded flamebait, but he's completely right. When's the last time the majority of the population was _really_ up in arms about anything? It's like we've been fscked over so much by these monopolies that we don't know how to get mad anymore. And by "we", I don't mean the slashdot community, but the public at large.

    Well thought out. I take issue with one point, however.

    Completely false. Go buy a copy of Romeo and Juliet in any bookstore in the country. alt.sex.stories contains daily stories involving sexual activities with children under age.

    A man was recently jailed for writing fictional stories about sex with children. Admittedly, he had been previously jailed for molesting real children, but this newest sentence was based strictly on his fictional writings. I'm afraid I can't give you a reference right at the moment; I'm at work and there's no way I'm going to google something that might get me fired.

    The bill only mentions "copyright owner" so it technically passes costitutional muster, I suppose (IANAL, blah, blah, blah). However, what would most likely happen if Joe Corpyrightowner trashed a computer owned by big business is that he'd get slammed by about a hundred bigtime lawyers who would file a suit for counterdamages.

    Joe would get screwed and go broke (reverse that order if he's sent to prison).

    That same part of the bill jumped out at me, too. Now I just can't decide who's stupider: The media cartels for taking so long to call in their bribes with our elected officials, our elected officials for not even being able to craft an airtight bill for their media masters, or the public for letting things get this far out of hand.

    I mean, seriously, there should be some major outrage over this, but I'd probably die of shock if I ever saw a story about this on the evening news.
