Actually, that makes perfect sense. The back to school crowd buys with their educational discount and gets their free iPod, clearing out old stock of both of these items. Then the new ones come out during the year when all the early-adopters buy them. Then by the time back-to-school season comes around, the parts are cheaper again and all the kinks have been worked out, so the students experience a much more stable experience that gets them hooked for life...

I had a few teachers that were required to require a textbook and a workbook for their classes. So on the first day of class they would promptly tell everyone to return their books to the bookstore for refunds. I would personally wait until a class actually required a book before I even went to buy it. They only books I actually bought at the start of the semester were books I found interesting from random other teachers' english, history, theatre and art class required lists.

But were would you go? What other countries even provide the kind of freedom we enjoy here now? We are losing our freedoms here, but what other country could take the place of the US? The closest thing I could think of would be japan, which is pretty free when you are an american living there (but much less free for japanese people, or any asian-looking person for that matter).

Apple can in theory do the same thing Except that apple doesn't use CD keys, you always have the original media to install from (which can be installed as many times as you like, without worrying about crap like activation) and you can turn off software update.

maybe someday we'll see a cool thing like Apple's hardware actually becoming as cost-efficient to own as normal x86 hardware...but I don't intend to hold my breath That's okay, you don't have to. Apple hardware is equivalent or cheaper than a similarly equipped PC from OEM in the same categories. It also retains more retail value over time, so you can sell your old apple system to significantly discount your new hardware purchase. The only times where this doesn't hold true is market segments that apple does not produce machines in. The only way you are going to get more cost-effective hardware in PCs is when you build your own, so low to mid-range desktops. I build my own desktops and reap the price benefits, but for laptops, I go apple.

I lived in Japan for 2 months over the summer, and my host sister-in-law had one of these all-in-one computers (I think it could also double as a TV). I personally wouldn't buy one, but it worked well for their purposes. They had 3 young children and just did things like email. It wasn't like they couldn't fit a desktop (though their house was really small) but Japanese people naturally tend to conserve space. My host father had a desktop and a laptop. Desktop for work stuff, laptop for checking email and so my host-mom could use it as well. So it really goes both ways. Very similar to here in the US. The enthusiast segment is strong in Japan as well. If you go to DenDen Town in Osaka or Akihabara in Tokyo, you can find high performance products from name brands for about the same price it costs us to buy off the internet.
