I wasn't attacking you or your post. I was clearly making the point that your post attributes something positive to Newt Gingrich. Normally when this happens, it's modded to Trolldom regardless if the statement is factual or not. It wasn't modded down and it still hasn't been. I am amazed at that.

BTW, you are right. Newt was behind that. And unlike yourself, I like the man.

Ladies and gentleman. I believe the parent post is some sort of spacial anomaly. It may be dangerous to tread here.

As I write this, the parent contains both the words Newt and Gingrich and it has been modded to "4, Informative". Dangerous indeed.

Never fear though... the thread is young and -1 Trolldom is only five ideological clicks away.

Yes. Outlook has some of its own problems, but it uses IE to render HTML email (as do many Windows MUAs).

Filtering out html email would be wonderful (and I'm pitching that next week), but I can't see it happening on my cutsomer's network (a rather high overseas joint headquarters). The first time General Dingleshits gets a blank email from his buddy General Whatshisnuts (because no plain-text version was included in the email), the HTML filter gets whacked. Such is life in the DoD.

That's a bit much, don't ya think? You kind of make it sound as if the military has some all-mighty list of approved software. One doesn't exist.

As long as the local DAA (Designated Approving Authority) accepts the "risk", it can be used on the network. I'm pitching Firefox to my customer's DAA next week. It's going to be an uphill battle though. I have no choice but to explain that many .mil and .gov websites will not work in Firefox. That'll probably kill it, but you never know.

My point is this: If the local DAA accepts the "risk" of using it, we can use it.

You can't scan https (well... mostly). Besides, even if one could, the overhead on a real network's proxy (not unlike the one I work on everyday) would be considerable.

I've been in charge of the perimeter security of my customer's network for three years. So far we've never been penetrated, hacked, exploited, or [fill in your favorite bad word] (at least, that I know of). I'm not scared of much, but I am scared of that custom html email (that will be rendered with IE) that exploits JUST ONE of my internal clients and opens an https tunnel THROUGH MY PROXY. There really isn't much I can do to prevent it.

Yes yes... anti-virus gateways - check, keeping systems patched - check, log review - check, being proactive - check, IDS - check, etc. Still...

And I didn't even mention a targeted attack. Even if I ban the use of IE, how do I get firefox to render html email in Outlook?

Seriously, though, if you're going to say that McCarthyism is a fiction made up by the "Liberal Media". . .

No, I'm not saying that. I'm saying it's a myth perpetuated by the media. I'm not sure who started it, but it very well could have been the media. During McCarthy's time, most of the public supported him. He was considered a hero by many. I linked to the Venona project, which shows that much of what McCarthy was doing was right on.

    Dictionary.com defines McCarthyism as

    • The practice of publicizing accusations of political disloyalty or subversion with insufficient regard to evidence.

The Vanona project pretty much backs up all of McCarthy's accusations. It was his evidence. The people he accused of being spies and/or communists (influenced and partially controlled by America's greatest enemy) were just that (i.e. the Rosenbergs = spies. Really.

. . .then I expect you to claim that the Holocaust was a myth perpetuated by those damn Jews and that mankind never landed on the moon.

Come on. That's a little over the top, don't ya think? There is tons of evidence that the Holocaust was real and mankind landed on the moon (they even stayed for a while ;). There is also lots of evidence that McCarthy was right (see Venona). So, what's wrong with my argument?
