Assuming 12 hours of light a day results in 8,860,740 kWh of incident solar energy. Taking the 29% efficiency number from wikipedia yields a final total of 2,569,600. So a first order estimate says the bacteria will yield 360 MWh versus 2,569 MWh for solar. I'm sure there are other considerations I left out including how much it would cost both in energy and dollars to create a one acre field of each, but I was curious how the numbers compared as well.
I believe the parent of this thread was specifically referring to college footbal, as this is the sport that has the highest paid coaches. The first reference you provide (don't have time to read the second one) is about athletic programs as a whole. You would likely find, that without football, athletic programs would lose substantially more.

I had tried over and over to build a computer that would work well for playing video and that would be easy to control, the video always seemed a little jerky, couldn't get the remote quite right, so I finally gave up a bought a Seagate FreeAgent Theater+ (www.Newegg.com P/N: N82E16822148499). It was on sale for $70 when I bought it, then went on sale for $50, now is out of stock. If it can be found anywhere, I would recommend it because it works great for me (sounds like I was looking to do the same thing). It can connect to my Windows shared drive and play the HD content perfectly. It can also access miscellaneous online sites like YouTube and NetFlix. I haven't had it long enough to see if there are easy ways to search and find media on the network shares, but I don't have a problem just browsing to the right folder and selecting the right file. I don't know how this device compares to the WD, but one thing I did notice about the WD is that the component video comes out of a little 1/4" jack + adapter, which I didn't think would be as robust as the RCA type plugs.

First. Could one send the entire digital audio/video signal over a single twisted pair.
Second: 50 feet is approximately 50 ns. I would think 50 ns of difference would be imperceptible

Depending on the Monte-Carlo simulation, I will have one iteration of the "for" loop execute many iterations of the Monte-Carlo. If I can't do this, than typically the overhead of the for loop isn't that significant.
There are many ways to avoid for loops in MATLAB. If there isn't a way to avoid the for loop it is usually because of the number of operations that are going on in the loop. If that many operations are going on in the for loop than the overhead of the for loop is diluted.
Don't know what your scientific language of choice is, but I have compared MATLAB programs to FORTRAN programs and the difference in speed was negligible. A properly written MATLAB function can be quite fast.
I believe a lot of those are insensitive to case, so does that mean that are stored as text and not as a hash (is hash the right word)? If so, would typing your password in those fields make your password more vulnerable?
I'm from the mid-Atlantic and the hockey teams I've heard about only play 82 games in a season, not the 365 that you considered. So does that push the recoupe time to 28.9 years. I'd be interested to see the life expectancy of the average Zamboni. Also, is the purchaser of the propane Zamboni storing the $80K under their matress or investing in something a little more lucrative.
Maybe you already know, but if you don't, you should look up "Slip Streaming". With "Slip Streaming" you copy your install CD to your harddrive, "Slip Stream" the Service Pack files in, then create an install CD that will at least install the most recent Service Packs. Saves from having to go through all the old Service Packs on reinstalls.
I believe the original poster meant to say "Household Routers". I would say 99.9 and probably even a higher percent of "Household Routers" do NAT since most if not all people that use them do so to share one IP address among all their home computers.
My parents just had their house with asbestos siding resided and the cost wasn't any more expensive than any other house. I believe what was done for theirs is just put the new siding over top of the existing siding with some foam board in between. The more expensive part would probably be finding aluminum siding... do they even make it anymore? Figure vinyl siding has all but eliminated aluminum.
Does a computer need to know whether or not you are using a Dvorak layout or not or are the codes sent to the computer the same? Seems like if they have the same keys, then they could send the same codes, and therefore the physical layout of the buttons would be irrelevant. If this is the case, you wouldn't even need a replacement cipher. Seems to me that it would be like saying you need a replacement cipher for an ergonomic keyboard, but again, don't know if you need a special interpreter for a Dvork keyboard.

As another Engineer that uses MATLAB quite frequently, the only reason I have used 64-bit support was to analyze larger data sets.
