There are always 2 sides to technology - coming up with the idea for the machine itself, and coming up with a use for such a machine. I think it's a doubly amazing achievement that this machine had a specific purpose, and was not just a general computOr (back in those days, "computer" had an "O" in it). My dad did some work with the ENIAC, and from his descriptions, it was essentially to replace a room full of people using adding machines, and that's about it.
Here's the deal: Regardless of whether the "vehicle" makes contact with the ground via wheels or a rail, it more or less is flying while in contact with the ground. Anyone who remembers "blue lightning" will recall that it was/is a missle painted blue with a driver's seat and wheels. If you want a record for the fastest gasoline-powered car, that's a whole separate arena. These people are trying to get something that 1) goes the fastest while 2) remaining in contact with the ground in some way. The reason this craft could go so fast is precisely because the rail system reduces the friction from the ground to a significant degree.
I don't see how to create anti-spam without some form of identification, simply because without an ID, anyone could use a mail type system to send junk messages to people and not get caught - because there's no ID, of course!
We already embargoed and/or sanctioned all those countries, so there's not a lot of work you'd be doing there anyways. Or, if you did land a job in Syria, you can expect a visit from the FBI. This has already been in place for years.
I'm getting a degree in computer art

I actually have a show going up on tuesday for my senior portfolio, demonstrating how computer images and code can be art... it's on my website.
Sounds like they got what they wanted... if this really works, it will make buying music a lot easier. i can buy 10 tracks, all from different artists, and burn them all to one cd. No more buying 10 cd's to get 10 hit songs... sounds like a smart move on their part. they'll save a ton of money on putting out whole albums vs. just releasing the hit online, which costs effectively nothing.
It's hard to remember doing any kind of research before the internet... of course, that's probably because in 1993 I was in 7th grade, when going to the school library and opening a book was considered a huge deal. I had to stay after school as punishment for writing a computer drawing program -- the teachers thought I broke the machine!
Where is it implemented that a trustworthy operating system is required? there should be a standard for printing the word "trusted" on a software program, so that everyone knows what everyone else is talking about. Companies shouldn't just be able to print "trusted", just like i can't print "low fat" on a hamburger if it's not up to some standard of "low fat".
The irony to the RIAA/MPAA/DCMA problems is that we, the people have the power to destroy anything they try to do. First of all, there will always be another napster/etc. clone (I won't name them so as to not cause them trouble), such that the program navigates around whatever copyright protection there is. Second, assuming that no program can get around the copyright, one can always take pictures of the screen, or record off of one's own stereo device. The analog technologies are still manufacturable, no matter what devices come out in the future. If everyone just disregarded these institutions' attempts at censorship, they will have to stop, or else they're wasting all their precious money. They can't arrest everyone! It would be like prohibition... a stupid rule bound to fail.
Then we can all have a party! A friend of mine said that, and shortly thereafter I remarked, "every computer networked together... you mean like the INTERNET?" sheesh!
if it connects to a mac, it's more than likely a better monitor than just a PC monitor, in my experience. For example, my SONY Trinitron Multiscan 100ES. Very nice!
I have noticed my JAVA programs run considerably faster under the Sun Forte/One IDE. Once the JAVA app is on its own (especially through a browser), it slows considerably. Does anyone else have experience with this phenomenon?
If your site is on a discount ISP (especially a free one), and you start getting a ton of unique hits, you can expect to see the ISP chasing after your property with some asterisk in their TOS. No one cares what you do until you're making money, then they're ALL interested!
I'd like to see an application that didn't require at least 3 sources here on Earth, because even though the lensing may "appear" more powerful, you'd still probably want to triangulate "through" it to get a really good idea what you're looking at.
On a side note... A sugar cube on the moon... That's wild! Perhaps now we can read the warning label on the Sun, as those skin cancer commercials suggest.:)
"Company X, Here's an email with the key to unlimited software installs, and therefore more or less unlimited money. Please don't give it to other people. Thanks, Microsoft"
add that to:
"Hello employees, it's the boss of Company X. Here's the key to install all the software in your email -- please don't take it home and steal other software with it."
SURE! There are a lot of people out there who wouldn't handle that responsibility well.
Apparently no one has realized that 97 trillion dollars is far more than the record label has ever, or will ever, make off of any album ever. It's not like he took the albums and made people smoke them and get lung cancer! if the RIAA gets the money, then what? Do they sign every artist in the world?
That's just a syntax highlighted chat room, AOL has a zillion chat rooms, so that part's not new. It's great to see a good use of a chat room-style GUI to do something else besides talk to each other. Good borrowed & modified use of an existing technology!

By a landslide write-in upset of 97 trillion votes. Electronic fraud is suspected in the election, results of the investigation are pending...
if Cable was faster and cost less than DSL, or vice versa, the faster, cheaper one would totally own the market.
SURE! It Depends on how you get it. There are legal ways and not so legal ways...

Exactly how far away does this thing work? Does it go through walls, etc? I have never tried a wireless network, yeah I know... stuck in a cave!

Yahoo peed on itself with its inferior search algorithm, and even without their ads, the results still seem tainted.

Perhaps Slashdot needs an atomically-precise HTML checker to catch those pesky "a href" tags.
