Let's be frank ... women LOVE to chat. I don't mean to be sexist here, but it is the truth. However, many women are VERY self-concious of their appearence ... so many of them will stay home instead of "going out", as others who have posted before me suggested. This will give an arena to those people who feel "ugly", or that have a hard time going out, or that live in the middle of no-where (or in a dead town) to virtuall go out and chat with people. This can be good in that it is better that people, in general, interact with people instead of turning into isolationists ... it isn't healthy ...

HOWEVER, .... this type of virtual reality world isn't healthy either. It allows people to make themselves look any way they want to "look" without any of the hard work. It also could make real interperson communication more difficult for people since they will rely on a sim like this as a crutch. But most importantly, a sim like this will allow people to settle for the status-quo instead of actually doing something to improve themselves. Since people won't see the real them online, they feel less and less inclined to take care of themselves both from a health and an appearance aspect.

The bottom line of all this rambling: This company COULD make quite a killing since this game will obviously appeal to the market of women (a market that is realatively untapped in the computer world ... compaired to that of men), which in turn will draw men to it ... but at a great cost to socity as a whole. This game could possibly become a sociological disaster in that the game encourages VERY unhealthy behaviour for long periods of time. Games like this can actually ruin people's lives ... just ask some of the EverQuest junkies from around the world.

So basically, they're going to help flood the programming world with young, ambitious "game" programmers that won't know how to or want to do anything but make video games ...

... I think that would clearly illustrate just how flooded the market is with "computer people" that want to work in the video game market ...

The biggest problem will be the number of lives a school like this will ruin ... these people will TRY to get a job with an established video game company ... then TRY to start up their own video game company after 6+ months of unemployment ... then they'll rush a crappy product to market so that they don't starve to death ...

They stand to lose more by going back to wher ethey came from. In the U.S., they know that they will get paid better wages and that they can provide a more stable future for their families.

Now past the security issue ... why would they want to stop foreign students from working on a grant? From the mounths of several profs I have had in the past, I quote: foreign "students work harder than American most American students. They are not distracted by friends, family, and other extra curricular activities. They are taught to please those in authority, and are willing to work for the priviledge to sta in this (the U.S.) country. They will work harder because they have much more to lose!"

That statement couldn't be spoken any better! I was an American grad student at one point, and although I worked pretty hard, I will admit that most of the foriegn students worked much harder than I did ... and they worked MANY more hours than I did! I couldn't keep up because of family obligations and obligations to my business that I was running while in school. Most American students have something else other than school going on in their life during their graduate career ... it is just a simple fact of life.

So again, why wouldn't the gov't want to take advantage of people that are willing to give them more bang for their buck?

I don't like what I have just stated, because I do believe that many Americans are being passed over for terrific opportunites because of what I just said, but it is the (sad) truth. The PhD.'s of this nation see that, so what can't the people running the gov't???
