While we think about this, lets compare apples to apples....
You used an extreme case and judgement aginst the person defending their home and a light case against the kid that broke into the company's web server.
First, most of these hackers don't steal much of anthing.. they just break in to say that they did it... and leave some proof for their other haxor buddies...
And as for the guy breaking into the home senerio... that probably wouldn't pan out that way. If he is armed and came into your bed room, you'd be forced to confront him because he obviously has intent to kill since he didn't just steal your TV and instead went to the portion of the home that is most likely to be occupied.
Lets be fair when analzing these situations... and not use extreme cases....
If anyone wanted to make this web site, I'd provide free hosting for it! (provided that it was TOTALLY FREE for everyone to use... and that it doesn't suck down ubber-bandwidth (more than a T-1's worth)
That is B.S. that you have to pay to use their logo and to essentially get listed on their site... where is their community spirit??
You can display their logo for free until March 2004... then ou have to pay to keep the logo there.... that stinks!!! If you are one of the people that helps to get this organization off of the ground, wh should you have to pay???
Is it just me, or would anyone else feel used if they put up their logo????
I suspect you would have a less cavalier attitude if it was YOUR money. Funny thing, human nature.
But it has been my money before.... I have had one of my game sites vandelized because one of my programmers was careless about the security in a couple portions of the game.
And I have worked in places where it wasn't my "money", but it was my time...
This is why sysadmins are kept on staff... to install and maintain current systems (that includes fixing any damage done by vandels).
Throwing eggs or spray painting a building... 6 months - 2 years
Hacking a computer a defacing a web site... 20 years?????
Does that make sence????
I don't want to encourage people to commit cyber crimes, but it seems as though our society's values are a little out of whack... especially when the damage can easily be undone with last night's tape backup within an hour or two in most cases....
Perhaps some of these coorporations that are so worried about this kind of stuff shold place a little more of the blame on themselves... and take a little more responsibility for their Internet presence.... they spend tons of money on swipe cards, cameras, etc.... why should the think they are going to do less on the Internet???
BTW: I am pointing at the corps. because it is their lobbiests that are pushing for these rediculous sentences for cyber crimes... everyone else pretty much says "SHIT!... then stomps their feet for a few minutes, laughes when they discover how the hacker got in, then rebuilds their system or patches it, and then moves on with life...
Anyone that wrote that much code in that little of time (1500 lines per day!) MUST not know what a function is... but we may never know if he doesn't open the source...
If he doesn't open the source code, the person that patened "cut and paste" should sue him for blatent abuse of his patent!! Anyone that codes that much in that small period of time scares me!!! Come up for air once in a while!!
I totally agree with your thoughts of making this distribution a single CD, but unfortunately...
IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN!
OK, now to prove that this isn't a troll post, I'll share my thought process about this...
Mandrake (just as all other Linux vendors) are not here to simply promote Linux (otherwise, there'd only be one Linux distribution).... there here to make money!
If they make the distributions small, everyone will simply download them (even people on 56k) rather than go to the store (real or online) and purchase their distribution that is already on CD with their documentation and lovely packaging.
This is why all Linux distributions will get larger before they get smaller... and that sucks!
Just my $0.02 cents.... and my spelling lession for the day. I never claimed to be good at spelling (that is what clippy is for), but I now know how to spell distribution.
That's great and all that they have disk space down to $1/GB, but what about some performance?
This is like saying you can buy a new car for less than $10k... but what are you going to get for that money... probably a four banger...
Now when they get SCSI drives into that lower price range, that will be something to celebrate!
Besides, who is really going to run a database that requires that much disk space (120 GB) on an IDE drive??? yes, I know you could use IDE RAID... but lets get real. If you have THAT much data, you're going to use the REAL thing.
Sorry to be the party pooper, but I think the "celebration" is a bit premature...
PC repair is fairly simple, but I know people I help rather get in touch with someone that has a proven record rather than some free ad in local newspaper "Call Chuck for Cheap PC Repair"
So if Chuck had a really fancy building in the middle of downtown, would you take it to him? He is still the same guy, but he managed to con someone out of enough money to put up an impressive "front"...
As with any business, especially in the US, marketing is everything. It isn't what you know, it is how you present what you claim to know.
That is how guys like Chuck get a proven track record without the degree... if Chuck does a good job and does a good job marketing himself (not by putting little, tiny classified ads in the newspaper), then he'll become the "go-to" guy.. but without the certification.
Several years ago, NJ tried to pass a bill that would require licensing software engineers
NOW HERE IS A TOPIC WORTH DISCUSSING!!!
Hardware is EASY!
1) Plug stuff in
2) Flip on power switch
3) Watch it go
But software... there is something that might need regulated. I have seen the quality of the programmers that have come out of most of our local Universities (and I have seen their resume's filled with lies)... and let me tell you... atleast 50% of these people are incompettent and 50% of them shouldn't be allowed to touch a computer... let alone program...
PC case fan installation (I'm working on CPU fans)
SCSI hard drive installs (but not SCSI CDROMS, tape drives, RAIDS, or other SCSI devices)
AGP video cards
PCxxxx memory (but nothing before 1997) and not Rambus memory
Currently working on CPU install and LRF support (little rubber feet)
GIMME A BREAK!!! Fixing a PC is simple... why should people be forced to waste money on education and licenses for this kind of thing! Do you have to be certified to repair TVs, VCRs, DVD players, toasters, blenders, or dust busters???
All this is going to do is make silly tech schools (like the infomercials as seen on TV) more money and make people invest into a career that already doesn't pay that well.... lets face it folks (I'm not trying to insult people, just tell it how it is)... PC repair is EASY!!!!
I hate it when educational institutions make extra money just because people HAVE to be TRAINED to do something that is REALL easy!... that idea is absurd. If you know how to do the job, and if you do the job well, people will come back to you in the future (or refer their friends to you). If you do a crappy joba nd don't know what you are doing, especiually in such a competitive field, then you'll be out of business in no time! Let our economic system decide who is qualified and who isn't!
Great.... so how determines which OSes are "trusted" (and how much of a kick back do "they" get)?
But even more importantly, whay happens if my board dies and I have to load the disk into another machine to get the data off of it (... and lets say that I only have 1 windows machine and one linux machine...)
... and what happens if you try to boot a "non trusted" OS... is it like an ATM and does it eat your hard drive?
What is the point of this??? If ou have access to the hard ware, you can steal what is on the disk!!! Do what Nike would do if they were a computer compnay: Just mount it!
Just my $0.02 cents.... but I expect change this time!
$319 Athlon XP 2700 333 $280 Athlon XP 2600 $274 Athlon XP 2600 333 $173 Athlon XP 2400 $130 Athlon XP 2200 $86 Athlon XP 2100 $71 Athlon XP 2000 $70 Athlon XP 1900 $62 Athlon XP 1800 $52 Athlon XP 1700
Have you checked prices lately? Lets look at some current chip prices [pricewatch.com]. An Athlon 2600 (yes, the 2800 still is not on the shelves yet) runs for about $280. The 2600 competes roughly with the P4 2.6 GHz (AMD didn't just pull the model number 2600 out of nowhere), and that chip costs about $270- Intel is about $10 cheaper.
IBM's services and technology don't come cheap, though. Companies typically hand over several million dollars--even hundreds of millions of dollars, depending on the deal--to IBM under these alliances, according to sources.
Even after paying hundreds of millions to IBM, AMD should still be able to undercut Intel's outrageous pricing and sell chips of equal or greater quality (ie, chips that have a detailed instruction set, not chips that just do nothing fast) and still make a decent profit.... although I'm not too keen on the idea of AMD's prices going up because of IBM charging them out the ying-yang for research... but the positives definately outweigh the negatives... especially if this could hurt Intel and insure that AMD will be able to compete with them for years to come...
There is NOTHING worse than a loss of a life

I know we've seen this over and over again, but I have FINALLY figured out what phase 2 is!!!
Phase 1) Release beta versions to the public
Phase 2) Piss off the little bit of a user base you have left!
Phase 3) No profit!!!
They had to let go of the gnome that began forumlating this plan due to budget cut backs
Does anybody know of anyone that actually needs these abr.'s???
If so, please post the link to their FTP site
Lots of DVDRs!!!!!!
If your data means that much to you, BURN IT onto disk!!!!
My $0.02 cents
It is simple
1) Get 120 people together (I'd say 120 friends
2) Cut the drive platters into one gig portions
3) Take home 1 gig for a buck
(I'm being silly too)

I think they forgot something veryy important
It's called legal fees and settlements
