Hmmm... that number is probably much MUCH lower in the US... I mean who hasn't been attacked by a virus here... I can post my httpd.errors log from my BSD box showing god knows how many attempts to run cmd.exe, whatever the current IIS vulnerability is. I am sure that my boxes are hammered on an hourly bassis by various virii, malware, spyware, etc.
Now talk to me about successfull computer infections... Only happened once when a manager handed me a doc file infected with a damned virus... Took me 10 minutes to clean up, yell at him and get him to clean up his system...
Oh well... time for the next sensationalist virus article...
Well so is your cigarette lighter, and people take those onboard ALL the time (they are not restricted)
Thank god a new technology can be approved that will help anyone (Ok 2 batteries - 5 hours not bad, but that won't get me over the Pacific with my DVDs/MP3) that wants to use a laptop on long trips.
Have my current electric bill in front of me... $0.1103/kWh. So to produce a kWh will cost me $3.00, my monthy return is 11 cents, not a good ROI for my investment... (and this is after I have to pay for the government rebates, yada yada yada)
That said, for very small niche applications it is nice, but when you have an industrial deficit of electricity, you need to build power plants, and frankly no one here is willing to do that in California (gotta love the BANANA people)
Here in SUNNY San Diego there is a huge power shortfall. They are saying by 2005 there won't be enough transmission line capacity to bring in the power needed to run the city...
The politicos solution, build solar power capacity... Only problem is they would have to cover 1/2 of southern California to cover the power debt that this area has. What they need to do is build 3-4 Nuke plants that will take up a small area, and supply the power needed to run this place for real.
Solar is a nice niche way to produce a little bit of power, but when you need multiple MegaWatts, nothing beats a real source of power that can be depended on for decades to come
Time for another (Mod -1 Troll) for me, but at least I will tell it like it is

WEP Keys in Mac OS X?

Wonder if it is time to mod this whole story down as -1 uninformative. If your environment won't support the tools that you need, it is time to change to an environment that will...
I don't even bother with WEP, WAY too easy to hack, that is why there are VPN applications that run on top of it...
Oh well, anyone that wants to rely on bad/wierdly configured security should expect trouble... Guess it is time to be modded down myself to -1 Troll...
Comparing a 900Mhz PIII clone vs. my 1.7 GHz Notebook, my notebook has the same 15" flat panel monitor, the same amount of memory/hard drive, runs twice as fast, plus I can carry it around. Doesn't seem like such a good idea.
This seems to be the typical response the the "environmental movement" price a rediculously expensive product that meets some sort of "green" definition, then claiming no one wants to buy it. Oh well
Not too hard to handle ITAR, just get the company lawyers in a room, say "We have to do this" and let them deal with it...
That is what you pay these people for, and you will need them. Remember the askslashdot question "How do I know when I need a Lawyer ?". One of the answers should be when your boss asks you to sign something that if you mess it up, you go to jail...
That said there are law firms out there that know what they are doing, have done it before, and know how to deal with the stupid regulations and buracracy so you don't have to waste your time and can get back to doing what you really want to be doing.
Every company has a monopoly on its own products. MS has a monopoly on computer operating systems - a whole class of products. Even that, in and of itself, would not have been illegal. MS went to court, not because they had a monopoly, but because they abused their monopolistic position in order to gain market share in other markets.
Actually if you look Microsoft was determined to have a monopoly on the Winodws operating system, not operating systems in general... And yes they abused their monopoly just like every other company tries to create a monopoly and abuse it to the benefit of themselves and their custommers... It was really fun reading RMS's posting on GNU/Linux saying that an operating system was a kernel and all of the programs that made the computer useful... I need a browser for my computer to be useful, might as well include that, oh wait, that is illegal bundling, oh wait.
Seems that Apple has a 100% monopoly on the Macintosh operating system and is now operating as a monopoly, closing interfaces to 3rd party developers
Where is the DOJ and state attorney generals ? I expect a lawsuit to be filed immediately giving me the source to the MAC user interface so I can make adjustments to my hearts desire.
Oh wait, this is an anti-Mac article, not an anti-M$ article, guess my karma is headed down now
Of course they want you to upgrade in a year when the next wizbang card is out... Plus the fact that most consumers buy almost exclusively on price rather than quality. This is how we end up with the service we get in the airline industry, and Walmart...
I would love to be able to shop around and find a high quality computer part, but the truth is that the market has made the parts almost indistinguishable except for price, and to get the low price manufacturers are willing to cut EVERY corner, including cheap fans and low quality software drivers.
People talk about how low quality Windows is and how bad Microsoft is, I haven't had a Windows box crash on me outside of running my development kernel code for years that wasn't directly related to the video driver. And that is not Microsoft code at all. Oh well...
I don't know how you can say DNS is centralized... There are many "Root" servers (ROOT-A through ROOT-'n') that are scattered around the globe... Each of these servers is capable of handling requests for any DNS query.
Now the database load/creation is not decentralized, nor do I think it should be. The failure case for the database creation going down is that new domains do not go online till it is back up, not a horrible failure case (unless you just applied for a new domain name that is). The failure case for multiple people creating multiple databases is that as they go out of synch, getting VERY different answers for the same query depending on which root server you happen to hit.
Same thing goes for IP address allocation... Oh well.
By the way the last issue on IPv6 address allocation (tracking a device using the lower 64 bits of the IPv6 address) has been talked about for many years in the IPv6 development groups. There are solutions, the end result is most people don't care... Oh well...
Funny, I don't have an explorer Icon on my desktop... lets see, Documents, recycle, outlook, ssh, mIrc, Hummingbird, mcafee (ok, I'm going to get rid of that)
It just drags into the recyle bin and was gotten rid of... don't know what you are complaining about...
Now lets talk about the size of the download, just have windows automatically update and it will happen in the background, nicely downloading until it is ready to install... If you are still on a dialup account, you get what you deserve...
haven't heard Lawrence speak live, but I have really enjoyed the "internet delayed" speeches that I have listened too after the fact.
He is an excellent speaker, and while I don't fully agree with him, he has changed my point of view significantly on the issue. I would like to hear him give his song and dance routine to the Supreme court, it is simple, 3 points, and was very effective... I'd hate to be subjected to it live with the ability to question him in the process...
Is them saying that Drivers Licences are not secure enough to prevent a simple crime like check fraud, yet our whole response to the terrorism in the sky threat is to show your drivers license to about 1/2 dozen people each time you fly...
At least Arlington admits to reality, even if I don't like the solution
Hmmm... Play random CDs that aren't licenced for public playing. This is a good way of getting the RIAA to come in and sue the Hell out of Starbucks.
I am betting that the second the District Manager (or who ever) walked in pink slips would fly.
Starbucks pays a lot of money to licence both the rights to play the music and getting the music that they feel helps build the atmosphere that will bring in more custommers... What makes you think they would like you playing with their formula anyway... ie. The music isn't there for the employees, it is there for the custommers
I am betting that you listed 100K equipment costs over the two years, plus salaries in the 3.2 million dollar range over 2 years (staff of 16, 100K loaded cost per employee). If for 1/2 that cost you could have gotten away with 10 minutes of downtime instead of the 2 minutes you have gotten, your per minute downtime is about 200K/minute. That is a LOT of commerce (about 105 billion a year in revenue) assuming that you completely lost that bussiness rather than having your custommers wait 10 minutes and place their orders again...
I have had my Prius for about 4 months now... Got a brand new 2002 in Feb, there might be used cars available, but for the Prius a year old car was the same price as a new car.
It goes 80+ MPH, gets around 50 MPG when I was commuting. Now I moved closer to work (that does a lot better for the environment anyway) and because it doesn't idle at low speeds on the interstate, only gets about 40 MPH when I actually drive it.
The deal maker for me was the backseat. While the Insite gets better gas mileage, the lack of a backseat meant I couldn't take my daughter in the car... The Prius is an awesome car and I would recommend it to anyone that was willing to spend a few bucks to help save the environment
Hell, even corporations get their releases delayed. How long did Apple sit on OS X before they decided it was ready... I thought I remember them talking about releasing it in the 93-94 time frame... When did it finally make it out...
Damned it, I wish people would quit beating up groups for doing the right thing, releasing quality rather than early...
Now talk to me about successfull computer infections... Only happened once when a manager handed me a doc file infected with a damned virus... Took me 10 minutes to clean up, yell at him and get him to clean up his system...
Oh well... time for the next sensationalist virus article...
Therefor the key used to encrypt each block will be different, and never reused. Perfect security right...
Please don't mod this as +1 insightfull

Dr. Cerf, What is the most life changing technology that has influenced your life. Thank you
Sending the RMS police after you for that error

Funny from the back of my tin, I've got it right between Magnesium Stearate, and Phenylketonurics (what ever the hell those are)
