Any one have an updaye on the cool 3D fighting game, or the computer case covered in fur? How about another lame ass Star Wars rumor? I hear that Lucas is going to create a new Homosexual, Chinese, African American Irishman from from Stargon 6.
Video games... have we really progressed? I got sort of a quandary here. My first system was the Magnavox Oddesy. I remember how intense my desire was to play Pong... I couldn't leave the damn thing alone. I was even excited that it had hockey (pong with 2 paddles:). I remember all the systems I have had over the years and how excited I was when a new incredible game came out for it.
Now my issue. I still love video games, and for as much as they have advanced over the years, I still can't capture that feeling of playing Adventure, Pitfall (2600), Mario Brothers, Zelda, Metroid (NES), etc.
I just picked up Crazy Taxi and Soul Reaver for the Dreamcast. And as incredible as those games are, I can't get that old feeling back. I am almost bored with both of them already. Why?
Did the developers of today's consoles loose the ability to make good games? Sure they look better, but where is the magic? Or is it because I'm just older and the magic is gone in me?
I couldnt agree more. However, that is irrelevant around here. My point was that if it was a MS product, shit would be hitting the fan reguardless that a DoS could kill any server.
By the by, the server (software) is in question, not the OS, correct? Asking, not being a wise ass.
Hmm... I could imagine the crap that would be posted here bashing MSFT if Yahoo was using NT/IIS. However, since they were using FreeBSD, we won't hear a peep from anyone.
I propose that the Linux community take this opportunity to inform as many people as possible about Linux by having demonstration/education events.
Why? Do you seriously believe that the people that will be considering upgrading to W2000 are not aware that Linsux exists? Who is your little show going to be for... the CTO of a fortune 500 company? You think he needs you to bestow the virtues of Linux? Maybe you want to target the old lady around the corner trying to find a recipe on AOL for prune soup, but something tells me she might have a bit of trouble with Linux, so you would be wasting your time there as well.
Enough of stupid fervor. Anyone that hasn't heard of Linux and its "virtues" has been dead for the past year. We don't need anymore rah, rah bullshit, we need a viable mainstream alternative (please don't tell me we are already there, cause you would be full of shit) to Winblows.
More support, apps, and compatibility, and less extolling the virtues of an OS that isn't quite up to the level it needs to be to be considered viable for mainstream America.
Well, I would assume that since he owns the fourth largest cable company in the US, he could greatly expand the reach of ZDTV, thus making it much more profitable. The guy is no dummy.
By the by, am I the only one who finds Kate from the Screen Savers repulsive? ZDTV was at my local mall, so I told them what I thought of her. They told me that she was one of the most popular people on their staff. Shame on you geeks!
You can't formulate a one or two sentence disclaimer by yourself, yet you are going to mock a successful software company? I can't wait to get a glimpse of your wit!
Yet, it took him some thirty minutes to grasp the idea that "when I drag a file on another directory, the file is not moved, not copied, instead just a shortcut is created"
Yea, holding down that shift key can really tax the brain:).
Thirty minutes, huh? Scary to think it would take anyone more than a minute to understand that. After all, it's just a nuance of the OS. Anyone in the field for 20 years should realize that different OS's work in different ways. I am not sure how being able to copy or move (depending on weather your holding cntrl or shft is either a difficult thing to understand or a knock on Windows. Rather simple and helpful feature if you ask me.
Maybe it was the teacher:) j/k!
All kidding aside, you make an excellent point about what an intuitive interface should be. Sounds great in theory, but can anyone achieve it, and who do you think is farthest along towards that goal? I would have to say Microsloth.
You know your in for a self promoting reply when they start off with "Whatever", and half the message is filled with their own achievements (LOL). Seems to be a need to pat yourself on the back around here and tell the world how good you are, while at the same time, not really adding any substance to the thread.
**Whatever. If you don't want someone in, make it so they can't get in.** Excuse my ignorance (seriously), but isn't that impossible?
Anyway, your wrong, and obviously mentally challenged to make this argument. Whether you were commended or arrested, it is irrelevant. You are not supposed to be there, and it is illegal for you to do so (why were you not arrested... were they were embarrassed and wanted to avoid the publicity?). I don't believe for a minute that they were happy you broke in, just because you helped them.
Also, I am not quite sure what your point is in your "real world" example. What does "noticing" have to do with anything? If you can break into a home undetected or by yourself, it's ok? Help me here:)
That's it, nothing else to say. If it's illegal, it's illegal no matter your intentions or whether or not you were noticed.
Uh, no. This has nothing to do with what you do with your findings, it has to do with ILLEGALLY entering someone else's server. It should make no difference if you change the web site, or report your findings to the owners. Your not supposed to be there, regardless of your final intentions.
Well, I cruised through Citibanks credit card database today, but I didn't have any malicious intentions, so everything is A Okay. NOT!
I believe Cerent is/was expected to have $100mm in sales in two years, so growth is there. Further, it is safe to assume that a router/optical switch with a Cisco name on it is going to sell better than one with Billy Bob on it.
I guess the belief here by Cisco is that they need this type of technology to effectively compete in the future with Lucent, Nortell, etc., and it is cost-effective for them to aquire it this way. After all, Chambers isn't an idiot.
You can think of it this way... all of the crazy valuations we see these days are based on potential future revenues. You mentioned $10mm in sales. Look at Amazon... What were their sales three years ago? $15mm? Now they have to be topping a billion. If you saw a company offer a crazy amount for Amazon three years ago based on $15mm in sales, you would laugh. But, look at the revenue (I didnt say anything about profits:) they generate today, and you would call that company brilliant.
Lastly, I am surprised all of the whiners on the site don't slam Cisco. If you think about it, they are very much like Microsoft. If they can't make a better technology, they buy it. Also, due to their size and footprint, they have defined (could say control) some of the protocol's for network communication, much like MS does with the OS.
In today's environment, you have to think of potential future value, and the costs associated with developing technology in-house when you assaign valuations. Crazy? Maybe, but then again...
Idiot! Isn't that what the internet is all about? Communication? So, what you are saying, is that all mail should be banned from a server if the originating server is not the same as the destination server? Yea! Let me send mail to my 4 friends who have the same ISP as me! This is fun! I wonder what the rest of the world is doing right now?? If only I could send some mail to someone else!
In order for the Inet to work, there must be standards... AOL posted their standards, MS followed them. This is one instance where Borg Bill and his minions are right.
The simple answer to this debate, is what is best for the end users? I could give a flying shit what MS's motives are. For me, and the millions of other IM users, open source is right, and therefore, MS is right.
A long time ago, in a far away place (called New Jersey), I called up Quantex computer systems and was ready to place an order. Upon completion, I was told the final price was roughly $180 more due to state sales tax (Quantex is based in NJ). This bothered me, so I didn't order from Quantex, but called Dell instead... no sales tax (and a better computer:). For large purchases, sales tax makes a significant dent in your wallet.
The tax issue back then (1994ish) was a big enough issue for me to change my intended purchase. If all future purchases are going to be taxed, will it have any effect on e-commerce? Will e-comm lose its glamour? Can I order from Dell Germany without paying taxes? I suppose not:(
If I suddenly have to pay sales tax on my purchases from Amazon, the prices are no longer competitve (especially when shipping charges are added in).
Forcing others to use his crappy software? Only a weak man lets another force him to do anything. Not happy with Windoze? Stop whining like a stuck pig and make your own damn OS. Like I said, if you build a better one, I will support it. By better, I don't mean stable, but stable, supported, and easy to use.
Most all us nerds on this site a rooting for Linux as the new champion. But, lets face the facts. It is not all that easy to use, and is not widely supported (yet). Also, the commercialism of Linux has begun. It wont be long before it is splintered into many different flavors that are incompatable. The greed of the the current evangilists of Linux will make sure it is never going to be a superior, commercial alternative to Windoze. The decay has already begun.
Also, I am not sure the argument of morality can play into this equation. Selling "B" software translates to being immoral? Nah, there is a need in the market place, and unfortunately, M$ fills it better than anyone. I wonder how many of the folks on this board that bash M$ everyday own stock in that company, and therefore profited by their "evil" and "immoral" ways. Are they just as guilty as you say Bill is?
I personally admire the man (in case you couldnt tell:). Again, not a great coder/visionary, but a great business man that knows that you need to surround yourself with the best talent to be the best. The fact that he does that shows he is not insecure in his ways, but rather wants to win (and who doens't)?. For someone that has come from a well to do family that really didnt have a need to be ambitious and driven, that earns my respect.
Finally, one could argue that the evil empire could have been beaten back a long time ago if someone (the industry) would have stood up to Billy's business practices. They didn't. Why? My guess is they couldn't do as good by themselves as they could with M$, or they were spineless bastards.
So how often do you go to dinner with Bill? you seem to know him well enough.
In all reality. Everyone of us is insanely jealous of what Mr. Gates has accomplished. your pissed of that your stuck at your dead end job while he is worth more than many countries (I include myself in that diatribe:).
"The guy is a total ninny?" Oh man, that's funny. Say what you will abvout him, but he is far from a ninny. No one can argue that his OS's and Apps are less than perfect, but he made his empire by being a shrewd business man, not a good programmer/visionary. To be as successful as he is (and will be.. THE GOV CANT STOP HIM!), you cant be a ninny.
Don't let your jealousy/envy make you look like a moron.
