Just head over to their site http://oppodigital.com/ and you can get all the info. Amazon carries it as well last I checked. BTW, the model is Oppo OPDV971H, place that in any search and you will find nothing but RAVE reviews for this player. Also, check out the Home Theater Hifi DVD player benchmark (also on Oppo's site). I have one and totally dig it. Awesome player!

  3. Same as SACD/DVD-Audio on Sony and Toshiba Give Up On Unified DVD Format · · Score: 5, Insightful

This issue is strinkingly similar to the Hi-Def Audio industry where you have two competing standards which are incompatible with each other.

Everyone loses, esp. the consumers who backed either format. For everyone else, CD's are still good enough and market penetration for either of the new audio standards is VERY low. Same exact thing will happen here, DVD will be good enough for just about everyone, and only the Videophiles will be jumping on HD-DVD or Blu-ray.

How sad when companies fail to understand history will repeat itself with the HD video market.

  4. Re:Timeline of events... on Will America's Favorite Technology Go Dark? · · Score: 1

I think you are mistaken between HD and Digital. HD is Hi-Definition broadcast sent via a Digital transmission. Digital is simply a conversion of information to 1s and 0s. Digital can also have any type of resolution the station decides to use (ie. 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i). TRUE HD is 1080p which hopefully will come out soon. Most HD broadcasts are either 720p or 1080i. A station can still broadcast a digital signal which adheres to the new law.

  5. Re:gee on Plextor PVRs Now Support Linux · · Score: 1

I read recently (sorry lost the link) that we can't record HD signals from cable or satellite since they are encrypted. The amount of information from an HD feed is huge and with current technology would take a 6GHz CPU to decrypt in real-time.

Here's to hoping there will be a solution in the near future but don't hold your breath.

  6. Wishful thinking on Plextor PVRs Now Support Linux · · Score: 4, Interesting

Too bad none of the HDtv cards out there can decrypt signals from Satellite or cable. Of course thats due to the providers forcing you to buy/rent their own PVRs.

I'd be all over this device if it would work with an HD feed from satellite.

  7. Are physics that important? on World's First Physics Processing Unit · · Score: 0

I'd like to know how important physics in games really are. Personally, rag doll effects are cool but I'd rather have more eye candy than seeing how a body falls down a flight of stairs.

If it came down to running Doom3 at 1024x768 with rag dolls turned on VS 1280x1024 with rag doll off, I would easily go for the higher res.

Yes I know the physic calculations are performed on another chip but that's money I could have saved to get the next highest video card.

  8. Difference in quality? on DVHS on a Budget · · Score: 0

Yes I did RTFM but the author didn't mention if there was a large quality difference between DVHS and SVHS?

He did state that when they tried the hack from VHS -> SVHS you could certainly notice the difference.
Any ideas or did I just miss this part?

Can you kindly tell us which missions/telescopes are more useful than the MOST important astronomical instrument in the HISTORY of man? It was always funny when people try to use the JWT as a perfect replacement even though its not versatile as the Hubble. Sure ground based telescopes have come a long way but will never be able to view parts of the spectrum which are filtered by out atmosphere.

Kinda OT but wouldn't the people who are paying millions of dollars to save the show Enterprise be better spent for the HST?

I was also in Europe about a month ago and used my US ATM card everywhere with no problems. Only problem I had was when a Rome ATM couldn't communicate with the central Auth server. Other than that, I used my ATM card in 10 different countries with no problems at all.
