  1. Bubba is impressed on Chinese Moon Base by 2012 - or 2006? · · Score: 1

NASA, ESA and China and Russias efforts in space exploration are among the most amazing and uplifting events on Earth today. The Chinese are to be applauded, and this Georgia Redneck wishes them nothing but success. I expect the Chinese to be successful, and really, all this is old news if you have been following what the Chinese have been doing.

The Chinese have been improving their space technology steadily a long time now. They are to be applauded for the contributions they are making to expand the horizons of the human race. NASA is an amazing organization of great accomplishment, it is a pleasure to watch the Chinese join in on mankinds efforts to move beyond this little rock we know as the earth.

I firmly believe the historical significance of this era (post WWII -> next 100 years) is ---A. This is the era in which man was joined on earth by a second great intelligence, that of machines. ---B. This is the era when the little naked apes left this little rock called earth, some forever.

I would predict that the human race is right on the edge of a great evolutionary split, the result, the species that stayed on earth, and the species that left forever. Then, just for kicks, a third spinoff of intelligent machines of some sort.

The early 20th century saw a Republican President do more good for the environment in America than any other President of the century. That would be Theodore Roosevelt, for those who are weak in American History. Now the 21st century might be starting with another Republican President leading the way to a cleaner world. As a Liberal American (but not a Democrat), I find that quite ironic.

In reading the article, I was struck by the complaints that providing BANDWIDTH is a major business expense for an ISP... HUH??? What is amazing about the Dot Com mentality (not yet dead I suppose), is this concept of a business with mega profits that doesnt come with mega expenses. Now, excuse me, but shouldn't providing BANDWIDTH be a primary focus of an ISP. Likewise, since that is the heart of the service, isnt it logical it is that it is a major expense. Likewise, if you have a business, and advertise that people can have high speed internet, what is the point if files cannot be freely transfered. (Like, you can buy this nice car, but dont drive it more than 2 miles a day!) There is something inherently criminal in this DOT COM mentality, where you are supposed to make money without hard work and the providing of a real, tangible service.

When all this broad band stuff came out all the chit chatwas about this great new mulitmedia experience. We were told the internet would be for everyone. So, sounds to me like the whole sales pitch was dishonest if P2P file sharing is unacceptable. And really, BroadBand has really never become BroadBand here in Georgia, USA anyways. With the pathetic upload capacity, it is like a phone system where I can listen all I want, but can only speak back 2 seconds every minute.

  15. Bubba says but on Why Municipal Broadband is Good · · Score: 1

It is not true that many people can afford to have a powerful server, even though everyone that has a decent computer and net card has the hardware to run one. By carefully controlling the upload bandwidth, big business keeps the cost ordinary people using the net to create content artificially high. As for DOS attacks and such, that is a problem because it is not treated as the serious crime it is. Human garbage destroying the internet should be treated the same as someone blowing up a dam, cutting the power or telephone lines, etc. There is little difference except method.

  16. Bubba Agrees on Why Municipal Broadband is Good · · Score: 2, Interesting

Internet service should be viewed as a utility, and should have a private and a strong public component. In addition, as the article points out, most of us are getting screwed on uploads by the ISP industry. We need fatter upload pipes, and being able to run Apache type servers from your home ( with some limit on bandwidth) is desperately needed. Allowing fatter uploads where anyone can cheaply setup a modest, personal web server would dramatically improve the internet for the majority of the people. Anytime an essential public service is controlled by a tiny number of companies, the pure capitalist model breaks down and needs wise government regulation. What would we pay for water, electricity, telephone, etc if there were no regulation. We would work all day just to pay those bills. PS, to Slashdot, it was nice to see a LONG ARTICLE full of information instead of short attention span theater bites!!!!

This is truly an amazing technology. I would love to see some government use this technology to create a vast online library. This offers too great an oppurtunity to let excessive property rights get in the way. Set a date for respecting rights (say 20 years or whatever), then up it goes into the library. I would love to see some nation do this. It would be a great gift to humanity.
