I find that fascinating. I was visiting relatives in South Georgia, USA. I was checking out the Roundup Resistant Cotton. Amazing stuff, makes weed control real easy when you can get Herbicide on the crop.

It's crystal clear that advances in Genetics combined with advances in things like automated machinery are gonna make agriculture alot more efficient, and make it where less people have to do the mind numbing work of an agricultural laborer

    Cool Stuff

Pretty amusing, when you consider that once, long, long ago, in an America far, far away, the President was an accessible private citizen.

Once, the President of the United States recieved visitors who just walked up to the White House. Once, the President used to walk out to Pennsylvania Avenue and hail a passing buggy for a ride.

    My, how times change...

  3. Rude on USS Ronald Reagan Commissioning Tomorrow · · Score: 5, Insightful

I think Mr Reagan was a second rate President. He was surrounded by a bunch of shady characters.

But, Mr Reagan was an exceptionally decent human being, who cared deeply about the welfare of his nation, and for 8 years did the best he knew how to make this world a better place. That is more than can be said for many Presidents.

He is also a human being, and deserving of more respect than that.

As someone exposed to Perl and not really any other languages, there is one thing I dont get. There are all these complaints about Perl punctuation. Too my eyes, that punctuation makes it far EASIER to understand what a Perl Script is doing. That criticism really confuses me.

  5. Bubba got an Answer on Ponie: Perl On New Internal Engine · · Score: 1

From the peanut gallery for sure...

I learned Perl in an amateur way in last year and half.

Seems to me after you use it to glue all the cool stuff on a Linux box and web together with Perl, it is way, way beyond a text language. I know I wrote a wicked cool family history program in Perl. Seems like with all the modules, and the fact computers are so fast a scripting language is even quick enough for very nice 2-D graphics, there is more need for a language like Perl than ever before.

I'd say from looking around, that Perl is really way underutilized and highly underated. Seems to me, Perl has only started its journey in life??? Take its normal uses, add some system calls to various Linux programs, use some modules, and Perl could be used alot more than it is perhaps.

Stricly a Bubba non pro IT guy opinion.

I only listen to music on my computers, but I dont like real loud music or thumping bass. So, although I used my Soundblaster Audigy for awhile, it got left uninstalled on an upgrade cycle. I like AC97 onboard sound through $30 speakers just fine. I just write BASH scripts to play mpg123 playlists. Beats any stereo component system I ever had over the last 3 decades. 30 GB of MP3 on the HD replaces God knows how many stacks of CDs. AC97 just continues the happy trend of real simple, affordable music. Having bought many expensive stereos and albums, cassettes, and CDs, I LOVE THE NEW WAY!!!

Now that Gnu/Linux is an international business force, playing with all the Greedy Trolls who make a capitalist world work, you better get used to playing by their rules. Linux will be involved in all sorts of legal wranglings as long as it is a big time product in a who knows how many billions a year industry.

You probably can't even be a major player in the paper clip industry, be doing business with the Mega Corporations, and avoid legal wranglings. It is just part of the landscape. All the chit chat about right and wrong makes lacks meaning in this environment

The point is missed in alot of these articles. The Big Trolls dont care about Linux one way or another, except as how it affects their products, cash flow and power. Gnu/Linux/BSD etc and its descendants will do just fine. They are based on revolutionary ideas that cannot be put back in the bottle. People that are involved in this software for business reasons need to worry. People who are in it for the love of great ideas are already pretty much immune from the legal proceddings.

Personally, I don't really get the popularity of the CD. They are useful for installing software and "media" files when it is the only way to get the data. However, I find a Removable Hard Drive Bay is a dramatically better technology. Praise be to God (or Allah or Linus or whomever) for Linux for solutions to ignore copy protection on optical media!!!

    Hard Drives have
Greater storage capacity, in less physical space.
Very competative price vs CD media
    Dramatically better reliability and performance
Security of being able to transport large amounts of data easily. For example, so at night you dont leave important files laying around office

Personally, I avoid CD's and prefer HD's as data cartidges and file transfers by LAN and Internet.

Some of the relatives might be freaked out by a cheap, powerful Suse Linux PC from a top notch mom and pop computer store. Believe it or not, they would feel more comfortable with a computer from Wal Mart (kinda mysttfying to the tech savvy I realize).

Does Perl, Tk and CPAN work on it, out of the box, or does that require buying the upgrade???

  14. Bubba Says Bigger Debt Due on Down and Out in White-Collar America · · Score: 1

For 3 decades the Upper and Middle class in America has sat and watched the goring of the working class. This is a debt that the white collar workers now must pay. It is bigger than a debt of dollars, it is a bill for letting the foundation of the structure of a modern economy rot.

    (All American Rant, Bubba aint familliar with overseas) Globalization is where the upper and middle classes of 1st world nations ignorantly stand by and watch 3rd World living standards be imposed by the elite.;

Now, as a lifelong Blue Collar worker ( Gardening and a little construction), it is hard to sympathize with white collar workers. White collar workers have stood around the last 3 decades while blue collar workers were gored. Blue collar workers have lost decent wages, access to health care, etc etc. White collar workers have systematically undermined a whole class of vital, hard working Americans. Illegal Latin American workers have gored the working class. There is nothing wrong with latino immigrants, until they are brought in to ruin benefits and wages for Americans through a shadow economy. Likewise, blue collar workers were gored (at a great cost to quality workmanship) by reducing any job possible to a temporary McJob.

Of course, this undermines the whole economy (long term rot for short term gain). So I am confused as to why after watching the whole bottom of the economy collapse under them, there is surprise it is now unable to bear the weight of a strong middle class

PS, this is not a statement for either politcial party in US, both are equally guilty poor economic policy to protect the foundation of the economy. It isn't rocket science, a modern economy needs:
    Prosperous, productive working class
A well educated, white collar class
A wisely regulated, upper class, that CAREFULLY balances protecting the interests of the lower classes. At the same time, it must foster an environment where the upper class is free to pursue the extremely profitable business methods that create wealth.
But when public policy does not protect all 3 classes, all three classes ultimately end up poorer. (The richest class will not reach maximum long term wealth in a world with weak lower classes, look at any 3rd world nation)
The solution is to restore the foundation of the pyramid if America is to remain a great nation to live and work in. America became a powerful nation through decades of strong corporations carefully regulated by a wise government. Not enough regulation to stifle the corporation, but enough to keep the corporations from devouring the economy. It is a careful balancing act the nation no longer does with foresight.

Unless a method unlike our rockets is developed, a cheap vehicle for leaving the earth is impossible.

It is unrealistic until we gain alot more experience, to expect space travel to be safe. All that can be done is try to minimize risk. Those travelling should be fully informed as to the dangers. I doubt many astronauts expect it to be fully safe.

Space travel is too important to mankind not to pursue it, even at great expense and some loss of human life. Congrats to them on keeping the shuttle going. If the program died, it might not be replaced in such a shortsighted world.

The amazing thing to me is how FEW atronauts have died in such dangerous conditions.

We live in a doubly amazing age. An era when machines became intelligent entities, and when the naked apes learned to leave this little rock called earth. Evolution is AMAZING!!!
