I agree. Perhaps they could sell their computers on ebay and then use the money to fill in malaria infested swamps... malaria (which is curable) is still one the leading killers in the third world (besides humans, of course).

I am talking about the way information technology -- everyone using e-mail, Wi-Fi and Google -- will make it much easier for small groups to rally like-minded people, crystallize diffuse hatreds and mobilize lethal force.

Isn't it strange that he doesn't mention the merits of like-minded people finally being able to rally each-other without government intervention and the diffusion caused by the electoral process? Isn't it strange that only "evil-doers" will use this technology for evil-doing, that there are no individuals with independent minds who will use this technology to voice their dissent?

Why is this post marked as Insightful? There's no reason why people should feel that the work they do ought to be done for free. To be honest, if I coded MySQL, I would want a return on all the blood and sweat, especially once the monied companies that can afford it start using it for free. It's not like IBM couldn't afford a license for MySQL... Why is the GPL God? I like GPL software, but I don't think there is anything wrong with me using my brain to build something from scratch and then expecting others who want it to pay me for it. That is what separates men from monkies, you Troll.

  6. transmet and modernity on Ask Warren Ellis · · Score: 0

While reading transmet I kept getting this sinking feeling that all of the more out-there happenings and inventions of its futuristic world were really just refelctions (sometimes to more extreme level) of modern life. As I go about my existence since I've read the story and incredibly f'd up things happen around me, I find myself sometimes thinking that the "future" seeming world of transmet isn't the future at all, it's just the way life is among human beings.

Why did you set transmet in the future, and is a direct reflection/expose on modern life?

I don't know how well cable (comcast) is going to develop - for two months they failed to show up to even install the line - so I went with Verizon DSL and the service has been fast enough for my tastes (used to a university ethernet!)...anyway I just finished doing some private home wireless networking jobs for small business people buying dsl for their homes and wiring all their XP machines together. I get the feeling the at very least DSL (cheaper and NOT the cable company) is about to score BIG with the cheap wireless products you can pick up anywhere nowadays.

I thought the article didn't really stack the deck at all, in fact, it was very favorable to windows - it actually legitamized it (you motherless whore). when a security flaw is discovered in linux, a community of people work together to release a patch while a company that issues a distro/release works on their own patches. MS sits on known security issues for years without addressing them, doing damage to their customers and user base. Linux users don't pretend that their is no problem running X servers (or ttdbserver.rpc for you solaris people, holla *^_^*), they come up with solutions. MS has finally gotten around to releasing patches as they come out - but what about inherent flaws in the OS that are unpatchable - like the Windows Messaging system?

    No, Windows STILL sucks.
