    I actually GO to Lakeheadu University (5th year comp-sci) and from what I understand this decision is because of our University President. Our school paper did an article about this issue earlier this year and if I remember correctly his reasons for the ban were "the unknown effects on developing brains" which I belive was related to his field of study. IMO it's all ignorant BS.

    but I do love that this issue has reached slashdot!

    420p is Enhansed Definition and 4:3 (although it is somtimes streched for 16:9)
    720p and 1080i are HD

    and nothing the writers ignorance more ...
    it has also been stated (through gamespy articles) that ALL xbox2 games will support 720p ...
    as opposed to the ~31/532 listed on hdgames.net of the current xbox generation

    i've tried 5 times now and cannot seem to start the download ...
    any1 have a .torrent? - and b4 some1 calls it piracy ... it is freely available and since you pretty much need to pay $$$ apple to run it (osx/mac) what would be the diff?

    WORST movie I have ever tried to watch ... I say tried to watch because i could not watch it for more than 30m .... it was just too HORRIBLE

    I can tolerate some bad movies but ecks vs sever made plan 9 from outer space look like citizen cane in comparison!

    I found some directions somewhere on the net for modifying snes controllers to use the lpt /db-25 / parrelel port. not the most advanced solution but very funn for playing emu games

    while this is harder to find now that k-lite has been closed down using the mirrors from this page http://home.hccnet.nl/h.edskes/mirror.htm you can find the k-lite codec pack which along with real alternative, quicktime alternative and media player classic should be able to play every video format on the planet

    it uses whatever drive has an audio cd in it right now i am using 2 drives to rip (itunes is doing it sequentually)

    maybe win95 was not the best comparison of a GUI

    but beos is

    jpegs and ANYTHING else with a handler driver works fast and flawlessly (although you could say that just uses the replicant "hack") and beos 4.5 + opera 4 = 25s or less (max 15s boot and 10s opera load) to read slashdot on a p150.
    oh and on windows i see HUGE performance diffrences that aren't from activex, they are from FrameBuffering! (playing video - at least on my system)

    now for what IS bloated and buggy about XFree86. The config files and driver support. i don't mean specific card support witch is understandable, i mean simple auto vesa support. those problems have caused 99% of my gripes about linux.

    points
    -I have used 4 diffrent distro's

    a really old slackware

    mandrake

    redhat 5 and 8

    and gentoo - fully compiled for my processor with VERY little bloat (only XFree86)
    -i have used gnome and kde.
    -I like OSS - almost every program i use regualrly is OSS.

    there was the neversoft version - cheaper looking graphics but really fun game and then the movie version - really nice looking graphics but not as good a game which one is the "greatest"?

    1 problem with dameon tools over samba - just using the network neighbourhood daemons tools would crash (or was it crash my entire xp machine I forget now). You may need to have the samba location mapped to a windows drive but just finding it through network neighbuthood it not a good combination with daemon tools
