What i find a really snazzy card would allow me to do is run with ANISO and FSAA up really high, maxed out textures, etc. No guarantees but i think upgrading your mobo/cpu/memory would have a greater effect. Just as you said, when you increase players it drops like hell. This is obviously not video card related.

  5. ati & nvidia release old specs? on Open Source Graphic Card Project Seeks Experts · · Score: 4, Interesting

I can understand that this card will never compete with ATI and nvidia which raises the question, is there any reason why ATI can't open source their old graphic cards, such as their 7000 series. Surely that technology is no longer critical to their lead. Sure many of those cards aren't being sold any more, but there are still plenty around and this may open up a niche market so they can produce some as a low-cost device.

I realize that kyoto is practically worthless without india or china jumping on board but the US needs to be responsible in developing next gen power sources.

It should be blatantly obvious that when bush says it'll cost a job, it will cost his friends/family :P Everyone knows that next-gen fuel sources will create jobs and patented technology as well as lessen the dependance on foreign oil. I'm not a tree hugger but i really think that the world needs to start smartening up when it comes to the environment.

  10. Quite impressive... on Philips, ARM Collaborate On Asynchronous CPU · · Score: 2, Interesting

The complexity of souch a core must be astounding. For all you non-ee's out there, a chip is full of little memory cells called flip-flops. At the end of each circuit rests a flip-flop in which normally the rising edge of the clock stores the results of that circuit so it pass that data on and start new stuff without loosing it. Everythig is synchronized to the clock. This is definently over-simplified but that's essentially why a circuit has a clock.

To eliminate clocks you would new circuitry such arbitrers and some sort of completion logic which could be used to trigger a flip-flop. To break a slashdot law, i haven't done any reading on any modern techniques so would some one enlighten me on some design issues involving simple tasks such as accessing a register file, or making a memory read. Surely a bus would still maintain a clock.

Where do the kids get the money in the first place. Hell many of them ask mommy and daddy to drive them to the mall in the first place. If they have a job, chances are they are mature enough to handle the mature games. But its not like this is going to stop kids from ripping and warez'ing games from their friends.

whether it will be a simple flash of a photo ID card (which many teenagers don't have)
Out here in BC, high schoolers and middle schoolers are given photo id's for school and reduced bus fare every year.

In truth, i believe this was formed because it will add another layer of beaurocracy... something that canadians can't live without. It also shifts responsibilities from the parent to the retailers. Now angry parents can blame stores and video games when their kid does something stupid. It's part of the "i blame society" trend that has been rapidly emerging.
