  1. Re:I used to use verisign on Redundant Credit Card Processing Solution? · · Score: 1

It has been a while so I am trying to remember what package we used to encrypt back then. In any case, we had an encyption package, so that we stored cc numbers, and some other vitals about the customer in an encrypted fashion. It seems to me like we stored their lastname and email address encrypted as well. Like I said, I cannot remember the package but we compiled our keys into a dll, which is about as secure as I think one will get (ie the encryption keys were not sitting around in plain text in a file, table or script).

  2. I used to use verisign on Redundant Credit Card Processing Solution? · · Score: 1
Back in my eCommerce days I used VeriSign (we called them VeriScum) and ran into this problem every Christmas. What my team ended up doing was this. A cc web page would try to approve the credit card in real time. If it could not, it would just store the card number in a table for later processing and put the purchased item on a temp hold status. We had some late night processes that would run at a few times during the night (12am, 2am, 4am) and try to process these numbers. Each process would try and fail on the 3rd try, then would get hit again the next time the process ran (12, then 2, etc).

I started off only running the process at 2am, but not all the cards would go through. When I added the 12pm and 4am spots, then everything always went through. The key is to avoid the times when people are at the malls competing for VeriSign's bandwidth via checkout card readers.

  3. Using SharpDevelop for about a week on Free Ebook on C# Programming · · Score: 4, Informative
I have been taking SharpDevelop for a test drive for the last week. I have been developing C#/.NET apps for the last 2 or 3 years with Visual Studio. I have found that VS.NET does a pretty good job, but has some big, bad bugs when you run into them (very occasionally for me).

I have found SharpDevelop to be very nice. The environment is very, very similar to VS.NET. It has a very professional look and feel, and I have found it a nice platform for building C# apps.

The only part missing in SharpDevelop is the ability to add "Web References", or references to XML SOAP resources. VS.NET automajically builds local interface classes and adds them to your project when you reference a XML SOAP resource, so that you have local classes and functions to call on. In turn, these call on the SOAP functions over the network. You do not need to know anything about the inner workings of the SOAP protocol to call upon remote functions.

Other than that missing piece, SharpDevelop is very fully featured and has yet to crash. Make sure to read the FAQ on their site if it does crash the first time you try to run it after install - their is a bug in the installer.

  5. Try a light bulb on Running a Server at Freezing Temperatures? · · Score: 1

We used to keep a 100 watt light bulb in our dogs' house. It actually kept it warm in the middle of the Wyoming winter. You can paint over it if you want, and place it in your case. You might not need anywhere near that amount of power. Perhaps a 60 watt would work, or less, since a case is smaller than a dog house. Hook it to a light switch, and turn it off when it gets warm out. If you spend a few extra bucks you can get a long life bulb. The whole solution, light switch included, will probably cost you less than $20.

This same concern is brought up everytime wind power is discussed. Why not combine the two? Place win farms and these new "solar farms" together? YOu could create a much higher power creating density using such a method.

I downloaded the Keyhole software last night and took it for a test drive with my wife. I mention her because she has a lot of experience with GIS (Geographic Information System) with government and the private sector. We found Keyhole to present a very nice user experience, but downloading the images was a little slow and the data was rather incomplete. My wife was really unimpressed with some of the missing data at a few locations she knew. I checked locations in South Dakota and Wyoming that I had previously gotten free aerial photos off of one of the online mapping sites, and none of the locations had better resolution than 19 miles up in Keyhole. I have images of these locations where you can see the structures clearly, but Keyhole was lacking that data and I could just barely make out streets.

The software is nice but it is not worth the subscription IMHO. There is a lot more easily accessible data out there on the Intarweb that they need to put into their product. Still, it is a good start but the current version just isn't there yet.

Still, I would rather live here in Austin Texas than in almost anywhere in California. No income tax, I am only paying $1.70/gallon for unleaded righ now, and I own a nice 1700 sq ft house and paid less that $125k. I live about 45 minutes for more live music per square mile than anyplace on the planet, and have a good job in a somewhat healthy local tech economy. I am not a native Texan so I don't have that "Don't mess with Texas" attitude. However, I think it is a much better place to live than much of Cali. There are parts of Cali I really like (just visited the redwoods - awesome!). But this would seriously be a reason for me to leave the state if I lived there.

It would seem to me that the poster jumped to conclusions. I have heard and read about this same analysis on CNN and FoxNews several times since the election. I believe I recall this very fact being talked about the next day (after the election) on CNN. I would imagine that CNN market share + FoxNews market share = the vast majority of the TV media market.

While I understand your point of view, I don't agree with it. First of all, ACID has been around for so long that I don't think you can call it a buzz word. Maybe it was a buzz word back in the early to mid 90s, but now it is standard industry terminology.

I work with some very smart people. However, all of these people are writing different modules to a product, and communication can never be perfect especially amongst geeks. We are going to step on each other's toes. I am counting on the fact that some PhDs at Oracle figured out how to do ACID right. We would drop Oracle in a split second if MySQL could prove to do this, and do it well (plus better backups). But Oracle has done it, and done it right for a long time, and their backups are much more reliable than anything with MySQL.
