You're right, rules lawyering sucks the life out of a game. The fact that they are given 15 minutes to argue about this or that rule is not, however, their fault (alright, it is, because the are morons, but whatever, the world is full of them, so deal.) -- rather the DM that either allows them to continue on that way, or that takes their bait and does the arguing him or herself is at fault. it is the DMs job to run the game. That doesn't just mean that have to prepare some adventure (although some of my best games have been spontaneous), but that they need to run something fun. Who is having fun when there is an argument going on? just the one rules lawyer who is masturbating over his or her great success, I suppose. When I DM, Rule #1 is the DM is always right. I don't care how wrong I am, I'm right so that the game can go on. people grumble occassionally, and I'll verify the rules (or justify my choice) AFTER the game to whomever wants to discuss it, but usually by then they have cooled down or simply forgotten, and we can all get on with our lives.
Also, mod me informative: openrpg for online roleplaying!
And mod me +5 is a DM AND plays online, but isn't a virgin.:-P
Well, okay. What's wrong with that? I agree that it might not be what you're interested in, and that's fine. I write a blog for myself and for a handful of close friends. I get less than 10 hits a day. And that's exactly what I want it to be.
If you want your page to make you money with ads, or to impress people and make friends, great! make your blog have the kind of content that will accomplish that. If you're like me, and you just want to vent, send out reminders, and chat about your philosophies, technologies, and whatever else is in your life, then do that.
As so many have said before -- Attacking blogs is just plain stupid -- they aren't hurting you. If you don't like them, then don't read them.
That said, I do realize that the other main point that has been brought up is that search engines are unable to filter out blog results, as they are useless 90% of the time. Honestly, that's not a problem with the blogs themselves, but rather with the search engines. If google had a setting "don't include blogs in this search" you'd better believe people would use it... But that code apparently hasn't been generated yet. But I think it will be before too long.
Although this is a "neat trick to pull on phishers", what you don't realize is that if you do this, especially in an automated fashion like this, there is a chance (however small) that you'll hit someone's actual credit card numbers. It actually happens from time to time. call your bank for frequency on that. not too often, but it does happen.
Moreover, most phishers have already obtained a company's credit card verification numbers, and can and will verify the numbers they get anyway. and I'm fairly certain that can be automated as well, anyway. Sure, you can take a couple of clock cycles. big deal.
Not necessarily. South Korea has the lowest violent crime rate of.. well, a lot of places. no stats, but near the lowest in the world. And guess what? no guns. Not even the cops. for 1 year of mandatory military service, men get to learn to handle guns. then, they go back to not being allowed to have them. at all. ever.
On the other hand, south Korea has the one of the most technological societies, with just about every home having DSL and multiple computers, every person with a cell, etc. etc. And guess what? also one of the highest rates for electronic crime, as well.
True, there are gray areas, and tons of social influences, and America is pretty messed up at the moment, but gun control certainly wouldn't increase deaths, that much is certain.
also known as: cars 100 years ago were not powered by internal combustion. that was made viable later than 1904, although the technology was actually only an adaptation of steam power.
Actually, that is not the first intended use -- although it is one. The primary use of this technology is to apply it to missles. The idea that the US could learn that (evil axis country X) is launching a missle, then bombard them to complete rubble BEFORE said missles reach the US is really useful, right? uhh.. well, anyway, here's my source: newscientist More to the point -- this craft (which, along with it's two predecessors, cost about 230 million dollars) is being crashed into the ocean. How are we feeling about those tax dollars going to NASA now?
yeah, although why bother with such sites that speculate when cnn has roughly 73+% of the votes tallied and online already, and they're actual votes, not just exit polls and such?
While the parent post IS a troll, it does bring up a semi-common misconception. I currently live in South Korea, and was raised in America. While there are fundamental differences in the social fabric of South Korean life, it does not, by any means, mean they "embrace invasion of privacy."
In particular, The Korean (and other eastern cultures) people have a more group centered attitude than the ultra-individualistic attitudes prevelant in the west (specifically in America). Firstly, the western-centric 'My view is right' attitude is kind of annoying, but for the benefit of those who actually want to think about the implications of this kind of difference rather than just brand 'different' as 'bad', I'll expand on this idea, and what it means in terms of privacy.
Speaking and acting as a group is not an invasion of personal privacy. It is an embrace of social interaction. Humans, as a race (slashdot geeks being a notable exception..) are social. While westerners beleive more or less in the value of the individual, South Koreans in particular are more interested in the value of the group. I, as an outsider, have never felt that my privacy has been invaded or compromised. All I have noticed is that people are just plain nicer and less interested in backstabbing and personal profit than those I've seen in america, as a general rule (although there are certainly abberations in both America and south Korea).
I hope this clears up the parents' and anyone else's confusion on this matter.
Insightful? maybe. Although, like much of/., parent post is a tiny bit biased.
Think a bit differently: Better Security: Better Encryption, more "security features"... This is not a statement about bug-free MS code, we all know that'll never happen anyway.:-)
Better Value: Value isn't always about money. It is a statement about a better product for your money. sure, that's not necessarily true of MS, but WTF might not be the best argument against value.
Better Opportunity: uhh... yep. you got me on that one. it's all about the money.
and... aren't the masses as dumb as he thinks? this memo is bologna anyway. The basic MS strategy is the same: make sure computers ship to Joe and Jane User with Windows, and they'll stay with it.... and can you blame them? Sure, everyone probably knows a geek or two, and we've all been through several thousand OS installs of various varieties, but most users quake with fear at the thought of having to install or reinstall an operating system.
I'd never heard of this, so I clicked your helpful link... only to read...
In order to enter Macray's Keep, you must be using Microsoft Internet Explorer (version 5.5 or higher). The system has determined that your browser has failed one or more of the afore mentioned criteria. The solution is to download (for free) latest version of Internet Explorer (its free).
nevermind, then.
I've done openRPG and WebRPG (the latter of which I left when it turned into a pay service -- it has since gone back to free, I believe).. but they are both 1) full of munchkins and powergamers and lamers and noobs. expect interuptions and idiocy abound. 2) unreliable, both the players (if you meet random people, expect literally 1/3 at most to show up to a specified gaming session) and the programs (servers/clients for both programs stall gaming sessions at least 2-3 times in a 4-6 hour session.) 3) as pointed out below, typing out a gaming session is pretty slow and a 4-6 hour gaming session means you don't really do a whole lot.
Sure, I liked them when I needed my fix, but you really cannot beat gaming in person. check your local gaming shops for bulletin boards and make new friends, even! sure, you and your old buddies can still get together, but that doesn't mean you have to limit your gaming to just with them!
Here's a link to a site (in english) with a very very brief overview of the issue and images of the 3 different mandrakes:

*cough* Firebird is confusing? read
here [www.mozilla.org]
From there: "Clarification: "Mozilla Firebird" is just a project name, in the same way as the Mozilla Application Suite is codenamed "SeaMonkey"."
Calling your old Mozilla install "SeaMonkey", are you? well, then call this one Firebird.;-)
Incidentally, the above link also as a link for the latest "firebird" download
The most startling aspect of this is, imo, that this gives people the ability to blame social problems on biological factors. People are more and more able to ignore the social factors that lead to crime, and listen only to the "it's not my fault" attitude that things like "crime genes" allow.
Pretty sad that all too many of these old usenet threads are being filled with garbage from people who just heard about it and thought it'd be funny to reply. Maybe they should close up these old threads to preserve their value.... It seems a shame to have good old, non-flame, non-troll news threads filled in by all the trash that can access the net these days....
am I the first one to think of this?
EPIC 2014

keep those monkey's going!
Wait, no, that's not it. I meant to say "I am Patenting Fun!"
Why not?
To paraphrase every post on slashdot regarding patents: That's where these laws are going... they no longer serve their original purpose, etc. etc.
and then I'm supposed to link to "whatiscopyright.org" and watch my post get "+5 awesome"!

Look at automobiles for instance. Are the cars today fundamentally different from the cars made a hundred years ago??
yes.
