As a Swede and a person with a positive view of the removal of IP laws, I must say that just sort of event just gives a bad name to people who are actually serious. Sure, perhaps they can raise some awareness of these thoughts, but after that they will will have to work for years to wash away the misconceptions they have planted themselves. On the other hand, I must agree that this is quite amusing, at least for people like us (the slashdot community).
but even 10minutes of pottering about the house must equate to a huge 'dataset'
You think? You see roughly the same images in that house every day, and what you do you've probably done a thousand times before. It's a compression algorithm's wet dream.
What's the point of an experimental space station if not to learn about things that can happen to a space station and its inhabitants, and what to do about it? I think we can learn something from this.
Well, Spirited Away may be something for the future, but according to nausicaa.net, a few other Studio Ghibli films are scheduled for Region 2 PAL release next month, among them Laputa and Kiki. And if the problem isn't the region encoding but PAL, I believe you can get ahold of Australian Region 4 releases (though I'm not 100% sure they are PAL, but it seems likely).
Am I just being cynic or is this important to the US because US companies plan to make big bucks in Iraq, and who knows what may happen without a US-style IP system?
You gotta love the SMS-stories on slashdot. All the Europeans go "What are you talking about? It works great, I use it all the time!" and all the Americans go "SMS, why would you want to use that?"
I actually find that interesting. What *does* a URL in text count as, linguistically? Is it one word, or several? Or is it something entirely different?

Today, quantum mechanics is popular with psychoanalists.
:)
Comparing a field that noone understands to a field that noone understands?
You mean swamp gas.

:P.
Of course, provided they actually solve it
Me too. On a site called Slashdot, just minutes ago. No kidding.
So, this would ensure that the kidnapped child stays kidnapped, but now their kidnapper will keep them from going to school too?

I want a screen that is indistinguishable from a sheet of paper.
How about just using a sheet of paper?
Copyright violation: Caused by nearly everyone, one industry sector hurt.
Software bugs: Caused by one industry sector, nearly everyone hurt.
Well, I don't know about you, but I read alt.binaries.pictures.erotica.* for the articles.
...he said on Slashdot :)
Who else thinks this was mostly done as an excuse for MIT nerds to touch women a lot under controlled circumstances? :P
You missed the fax preference service.
At first glance I read that as "tax preference service". Now there's an idea...

One day, even that won't work. Or it will be illegal.
"Let's see, this one is 4 GigaQuantumLengthUnits. No, 5. No, 3. No, it's 4, 5 *and* 3! Haha! But where the hell am I?"
..I want my brain downloaded to a gigantic cybernetic fight robot piloted by a cute 14-year-old japanese chick. A good way to spend eternity.
Or how about the more commonly used expression "a handful of people"? Would that equal one moderately sized internal organ, or what?
Hmmmm.... What's the information content of lightning?
One bit: very much "on".

Funny, I always thought of Man as the greatest threat to mankind.
"A political struggle!"
Say, it wouldn't be possible to, like, enlarge parts in the process?
