So I guess they have your washing machine scenario covered.

Hence their coming out with a Microsoft VM which is, on purpose, incompatible with the Sun VM.
This is simply not true. The MS VM ran 100% Java Compliant code just fine. The thing MS did as add extensions that were specific to its VM. The Visual J++ tool defaulted to using this extensions. Developers who weren't cafeful could end up writting software that would only run on Windows. But to say that software that was written in pure Java might not work on MS VM is a fallacy.

I use Netbeans 3.3.2 on Windows 2000 for all my Java needs and this annoyance with the cursor disappearing happens with it too. If I minimize Netbeans and bring it back up it sometimes doesn't have the cursor of if I ALT+TAB to another full screen app and come back the same happens. I Have to ALT-TAB a few times or close the editor window and reopen to get it back. On the rare occasion I have to kill Netbeans completely.

How so? What site besides java.sun.com uses applets? Besides, if you don't have a JVM, which only new installs of XP don't (all upgrades to XP still have the JVM), you are prompted to install it. The download isn't that big even for dial-up. And you could always install Sun's JVM which is up to date. MS is stuck using 1.1.8. Java is on 1.4 now. So how is this a feature that users want? I hate applets and ActiveX controls a like. Users read stories on CNet about how the JVM is not included and they freak out not knowing that there is a 99% chance they won't be affected at all.
