But the politics and powers-that-be didn't listen. And who suffers? The people that didn't want it in the first place. As Jon Stewart says "...we seem to always get Opposite-guy to run these departments...", but this time it's been happening way before the current Bush II administration (they just perfected some things :).

me don't think so. in 50 years time robots will create a slave(-like) economy (cheap labor for those that can afford it). With a good dose of super-high unemployment (think 50%), possible severe climate change and the fact that we might not have any cheap power generation. me thinks it might not be pretty. OR. Governments suddenly become people empowered. Wealth is redistrubuted. Medical advances make us live as though we're 20 years of age for 200 years.

replying to yours and the ones below. I think you guys miss the point. Mission critical? Dual boot? What about people who want a computer that they can put in the living room, or the kitchen and *LOOKS* good but they can't be arsed learning a new OS. Come on guys, get out of your "if you can't write OO code you're not relevant" mode. Personally, I think there be more people buying the Mactels simply because they look good than the number of people who buy macs so they can have a PPC platform for their favourite *NIX flavour.

Sure most people want it for OSX but some might not - this is all new territory I think. It might be 0.5% of the switcher base or it might even be a lot, lot more. Who knows.

    1. we pay anywhere from 5-20 US dollars to see a movie
    2. if we need a drink or snack for the 2-3 hours movie then it'll cost us about 2-5 times normal *retail* price
    3. we sit through *ads*
    4. and when they show the movie the projector is usually at a luminosity 20% less than it should be

and of course, when we do buy the DVD we're stuck with

    A. being forced to watch: FBI warnings and brand identifications (WTF!)
    B. region coding, and
    C. we were promised that each DVD would include a choice of subtitles in 50 difference languages and 5 difference spoken ones - instead all we got were permanently burnt-in subtitles and one language (usually French for a Japanese movie)(OK this is because I live on the Continent and like foreign movies but don't speak dutch or french - well not to the level I can follow subtitles! - but I was promised god-damn you!)

the main difference for movies and CDs is that movies make big money from the screening. On the other hand bands pretty much get all their money from the CDs. There is no big hit of money (eg opening weekend) that can recoup most, if not all, of the costs. Making money from DVDs is just icing on the cake (good icing though).

To agree to your point, the lobbyists probably used the above arguments to convince Congress to pass these laws. I guess books also some in the same category of CDs (can't rent them) for pretty much the same reason.

errr...we don't know. But this doesn't automatically assume that the ID is correct. One of my biggest peeves is if ID is correct then please make a testable hypothesis that shows it is "more" correct than natural selection. If people can do it for different hypotheses of Big Bang theories, why not for something as fundamantal as this. It's not just a question of interpreting the same data differently (eg fossils) but also seeing which theory can explain everyday events. If ID is better then we should be able to create better drugs etc than we do now. It's not that difficult to determine which one is better as a theory.

But then the conclusion will be that maybe none are right.

actually if we sold alcohol to minors we might not have the problems we have now. Kids should learn to drink alcohol around the dinner table not at someones' weekend-when-the-parents-are-away party or hey-I-just-got-my-drivers-license-let's-paaaarty. The US law of 21 is such a puritan hangover that's it's laughable. Nearly all countries that are more relaxed about alcohol (eg Italy, France, well any non Anglo-American country) has far less teenage drink problems than the US or UK.

We seem to live in a society that we try and do the utmost worse at solving a problem: solve teen pregnancy by not talking about condoms; solve teen drinking and drug taking by putting people in jail. Either we're very stupid or we are downright being lead by purely evil people who want the worse for us at all times.
